New boat rod for Bottom bouncing the Pilbarra
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2010-02-23 11:28Hi Guys
I am currently using a Shimano Lacunas jig rod to bottom bounce and I am finding it a little long to be a true boat rod.
I like fishing with a spin reel, The Saragosa 8000 and was thinking off a Monster mesh to match it.
Any suggestions?

Save $93 - Fishing From Boat License And Other License Renewals - Must Read!
Submitted by wazzbat on Mon, 2010-02-22 20:39Just thought I'd post a reminder for everyone. Not sure if it's been done before but... Just in case anyone was planning an extended long weekend fishing trip this weekend, don't forget you'll need a licence to fish from your boat come Tuesday 2nd March. It's $30 for each person.
Here are a few important links you might want to see...
You could also save yourself a packet if you buy an "Umbrella Licence" before the 2nd of March. If you get your Licence before this date, it will only cost you $87.00. If you wait till the 2nd March, it will cost you $180. That is $40 x 5 different licences = $200 - 10% discount = $20. So if you fish for everything, it's well worth renewing NOW! Even if you already have time left on your licences. It can be a bit confusing so have a good look at the links and ring fisheries if you're not sure. $93 is nothing to sneeze at!
Renew Your Licence Now And Save!
Remember - An "Umbrella" licence does NOT include the "Fishing From A Boat" licence! (Thanks Sarcasm0)
Hope this saves some people some pennies!

Softies rod
Submitted by silly on Mon, 2010-02-22 18:53I'm looking for a new softies rod mainly for snapper fishing on the boat but also for flicking around exmouth. Something around 7' and 3-6kg probaly be suitable. Going to match it to my 3000 size daiwa. Budget around $150
Would like a G loomis or shikari but think there way over my budget... Thoughts so far are shimano stralo stix 7' 3-6kg or raider II 4-7kg, Penn Pinpoint tournament 7' 4-6kg, Rovex aluma 4-6kg ??
What others are there?

Marine reserves 'a success'
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2010-02-22 13:57Interesting Read, Great barrier Reef. Sounds promising.
___________________________________________________________________________
FISH stocks, sharks and dugongs have benefited greatly from protected marine reserves established on the Great Barrier Reef five years ago, a new study shows.
The research found rapid increases in fish and some shark populations inside marine reserves that prohibit fishing.
It also found no-fishing zones were located in areas that threatened species such as dugongs and marine turtles frequent and helped eliminate hazards such as fishing nets.
The study was published in the journal Proceedings of the US National Academy of Sciences.
Lead author Dr Laurence McCook says the number of coral trout doubled in some reserves within two years of banning fishing.
He says red throat empire and red empire numbers were also up.
"The resounding pattern overall is there are more and bigger fish in the protected areas than the fished areas," said Dr McCook, from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies.
Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.
End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
"Bigger fish have more babies and they produce more off-spring.
"The increased reproduction is almost spilling over to the fished areas."
The study found larger, more mobile species, such as sharks, have been slower to recover but grey reef sharks were 30 times more abundant in protected reefs compared with fished reefs.
Dr McCook said there were also increases in white-tipped and black-tipped shark populations.
He said reserves benefit the overall health and resilience of marine ecosystems.
"Outbreaks of coral-eating, crown-of-thorns starfish are less frequent on no-take reefs, which consequently have a higher abundance of healthy corals after outbreaks," Dr McCook said.
The team says there is concern of poaching taking place in some no-take zones.
Dr Josh Cinner, of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, says reserves worked best when there has been a formal consultation processes about the rules, and locals were included in monitoring the reserve.
He said ongoing training to educate locals in the science and policy behind reserves also helped.
"Park agencies need to foster conditions that enable people to work together to protect their local environment voluntarily, rather than focusing purely on regulations and patrols," he said

burly
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sun, 2010-02-21 22:34was reading a post earlier and got to thinking of a machine that would mince up whole fish frames.
has anyone ever mulched a whole fish frame and head through one of these electric/petrol.. mulchers/chippers?
i have tried the old cast mincer but the opening is just to small, it would be a good way to get rid of all the left overs and make good burly at the same time.
freze into milk cartons and then use in your burly pots.
somebody must of tried.

Oceanside Tackle & Marine now stocking Shout "Lighten" & "Stay" Japanese Jigs!!!
Submitted by Oceanside Tackle on Sun, 2010-02-21 15:18
Shout "Lighten" Jigs;
This technical Slow Jerker jig offers a variety of action to entice a bite. Although it has a symmetrical shape and low centre of gravity, its movement induces the reactions such as darting action, horizontal action and fluttering action with slow jerking.
The outcome, fish love it and there's not too many reef fish that would ignore. Ideal for dhufish, snapper, blackarse, emperors, cods, coral trout etc etc
These Japanese made jigs have a great prism shine to attact and a long lasting finish. All popular colours in stock and for demersals the 90g is a very productive weight & size to imitate a baitfish!
$29.95
_________________________________________________________________________________________

Shout "Stay" Jigs;
To be succesful in jigging is to be diverse and have a good selection of jigs. This pays off when the fish are fussy which can happen on those slow days. These STAY jigs by Shout are unique in the way they can hang in the strike zone longer to entice the bite. Often fish will hit these jigs as its invading their territory and a must in the jig bag!
Ideal for dhufish, snapper, blackarse, emperors, cods, coral trout etc and the bigger 200 also ideal for big skippy, amberjacks, sambo's, YTK etc
These Japanese made jigs have a great prism shine to attact and a long lasting finish. All popular colours in stock and popular sizes are 100/130/200g. A very productive jig that imitates an injured or stunned baitfish!
Prices start from 29.95

Black bream wired for salinity research
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Sun, 2010-02-21 13:31http://www.news.uwa.edu.au/201001192073/media-statements/black-bream-wired-salinity-research
Black bream wired for salinity research
A research project that involved tracking black bream on the South Coast has found some fish will swim up to 10 kilometres up and down the estuary and river.
Researchers, Paul Close and Dave Tunbridge, from The University of Western Australia's Centre of Excellence in Natural resource Management based in Albany, have been studying the effects of increased salinity on black bream in the Wellstead Estuary and Bremer River on the South Coast.
In early 2008, they caught 25 adult black bream and surgically implanted acoustic transmitters. Ten loggers distributed along the river and estuary automatically recorded the positions of these fish every two minutes.
The data collected has now been analysed and indicates that black bream are highly mobile. Some fish made movements of up to 10 kilometres up or downstream over a period of two to three days, sometimes every two weeks.
Other individual fish tended to live in a particular area and make much smaller movements within their home range. Most fish moved downstream as the water in the estuary became fresher.
"This research is important in understanding increasing salinity levels in rivers and estuaries, one of the consequences of climate change, on local fish populations," Research Assistant Professor Paul Close said.
"We now have an understanding of the importance of the lower salinity habitats in the upper reaches of the estuary in sustaining fish populations under a drying climate," he said.
The Jack Family Charitable Trust, the Department of Water, Great Southern Development Commission and The University of Western Australia supported this project.
Richard Grist, a trustee of the Trust, said the Jack Family Charitable Trust was pleased to be able to contribute to a local project that would benefit the management of an important environmental, social and economic regional resource in the longer term.

wagoe 12-14/2/10
Submitted by sloppyjoe24 on Sat, 2010-02-20 20:17headed up to wagoe last weekend for something to do, hoping for a good arm strecthing...
things weren't looking too promising wen we got there and it started drizzling rain and a howling southerly.
but we were there to fish so off we went to find bugger all swell and fairly fishable conditions considering the weather. so anyway first cast not expecting much gets a good tap tap on the end, i get it all the way to shore for the biggest tailor i've seen to fly out of the water and shake the hooks! ah the frustration not a good start.
a few tailor came through after that of fairly good size plus a good morwong which went back and a few good sizr tarwhine which went back filleted on hooks. there was plenty of activity to keep us busy, i had two bust offs which were probably sharks plus a good thumping run which felt alot like a mulloway which i dropped- again not happy!
the next day was extremely quiet, a small reef shark and a dart was all that hit the sand with nothing in between, a long day for sure. sunday morning had a quick fish for a tailor and a few pesky cod before we packed up and headed home. maybe better luck next time

fishing today (saturday) anyone eles go
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sat, 2010-02-20 18:38went out fishen today, manly to give the new etec a work out......what an engine..could not be happier than a pig in shit.
was a very shitty day, with the wind blowing all day, but we still managed to get a nice size queen snapper, nanagi, another pb 67cm king george, a very nice blue fin tuna and numerous rock cod's and parrot fish.
we also got busted of a couple of times.
also nothing would touch the ocky at all, my mate had ocky on one hook all day. everything came of the squid
one thing to note , as we went past the 60 mtr mark out to the 100-150mtrs we got absoulety nothing, not even a bite, so we headed back in and started getten bites again.
it was a mission getten the baits past the birds today, bloody albatross trying to get in the boat and pinch the bait of the bait board, even with a little dong on the head with the net pole didnt phase him.
tried to put a livey out but the mutton birds were jumpin all over it....its amazing how deep they can swim.
cant wait to get the new donk out on a good day and get onto some dhu/snapper.
anyone else go out?
