Octupus presentation as bait

Ok my question is simply this,

1 When using occy for bait what is the best way to present it for bottom bashing (assuming paternostr(spelling)rig).
2 Do you leave the skin on or off.
3 occy or squid or both?
4 Other tips appreciated

Cheers

tomorow

anyone going for a fish tomorow need a deckie  im keen all the normal

sun 4th out deep

Headed out today from rockingham at 7am to Hillary's Fad, some big swells running out deep, some i rekon hitting 4 and half m, pushed out there to find only one other boat there, which left not long after, thought this isnt a good sign.

The current was pushing 100miles an hour and made fishing hard, tried cubing for the dollies but nothing, couldnt stay in the area long enough, so decided to troll around a bit, craig had a small very half hearted hit that didnt hook up and we saw 3 dollies jump near the fad, all good fish around 7 to 8kg, then decided to troll a few lures for a while towards PGFC which is no longer there either, no tuna at all even though we trolled alot of bait schools.

Headed then to the 90's for an hour bottom bashing, pretty quiet, only a few small bites, then got the nice pinky and it was time to head in.

Andy you will pleased to know i hit my herring spot and got heaviest herring again todayTongue out 3 comps in a row now.

All in all around 80nm for bugga all but was nice being out on the water and had a huge pod of dolphins follow us for a while which was very pleasant, some huge ones too

northmole

hey guys i want to know where north mole is and what would u catch there

skanky female dhuie

hey guys, went for a night fish off bunbury friday night in 40m caught one dhuie .this dhuie was 900mm long but only weighed 12kg its head n tall were massive but it was only around one hundred mm thick.it had no eggs or food in its gut but spewed a hole cuttle fish up on the deck.the dhuies i normaly catch are black this one was light silver.the flesh looks like big pinky color n texture .havent eaten it yet.i never got a photo .i filleted it at the ramp at 4am and then headed of to work for 10hrs.my phone shat its self out at sea with the boat launching every swell,painfull-still painfull.lol.whats the go with this skanky dhuie?

Saturday 3rd from Two Rocks

Met Matthew on the ramp at 6 o'clock we headed out north, conditions were good. Things were a bit slow as most patches weren't holding any fish. Did a lot of miles .by days end we had a good feed of fish with some gear stuffups, hooks snapping knots slipping and a straightened hook there was a few bronze whalers sharks around as Jesse hooked up two around the 10kg
5 x Dhuie’s 2 released
2 x Sargent bake all released
1 x baldie
5 x Break Sea cod
1 x sand snapper
2 x sharks all released
1 x stingray all released
4 x blowies all released
Plus as said before 4 x fish dropped on the way up.
We had to pull out the game chair for the ray as I needed to sit and rest ( that esky needs some padding )

salmon watch

tried westend no sign of any salmon the swell was pumping, not a total disaster,Timbo picked up a nice P Snapper,it started to look ordinary so left for home, there was huge schools of bait fish about 6 miles out but no predators were interested.
looks like next year for salmon or try Coventry reef etc.

Smorgasbord

The plan to head out to Quinns Rocks tonight was put on hold after my fishing croney became indisposed.
So I decided it was an opportunity to try out a plan I had been hatching to try out a particular spot at Hillarys with a particular rig.
Happily, it all worked out even better than I had hoped and I managed to score a pretty good smorgasbord of a king george whiting, a few skippy, a few herring, a squid (and quite a few crap fish) all on the one experimental rig.
And I was home in time to cook up a smorgasbord for my wife.

two rocks deckie for sat

Presetting Drag?

I've spoken to and swapped PMs with a number of folks in here and wonder what the general feeling is on this subject and what (if you'd like to say) each of us do.

It's on the matter of pre-setting drag.

I've often read that, in order to complete the match of the reel/rod/line (mono or braid), the ideal practice is to pre-set the drag (star/lever) of your reel, using a spring scale or something similar. I've noticed though, that if I pre-set my Sealine SLD 30 I loose 'free spool' and need to back the drag off. The literature recomends pre-setting the drag only at the 'strike' setting, not past that.

In doing this, asside from loosing the free spool, if, when faced with a fish that still takes a lot of line (that recent sambo I caught was a perfect example) I need to move the lever past the strike position. In doing this, I risk setting a drag that either exceeds the line ability (says two/thirds to allow for knot strength) or, even worse, exceed the rod's capacity.

I know some still set the drag 'in-situ' depending on the fish.

I'd be interested in your input?

Quinns Rocks

Hi All, Vans and I are planning to try some landbased fishing at Quinns Rocks tomorrow evening. I have never fished there and I am wondering if anyone could give us a heads up on what maybe a good place to start.
I have heard the third groyne to the north can be a good spot. Anyone had any luck there?
Many thanks, Colin Hay

SHIMANO?

Ingenuity at its best!

weekend looking good

So come on, who's heading out for a fish. I'll be out there on one of the day not sure which one yet ,try the ground through the 36 metres,as the bait fish were starting to school on the patchs last time out, where there's bait, it won't be long and there'll be bigger fish.got to be a better day than last weekend ..

Bit puzzled

In the latest hot bites there's a dhuie on page 51 now the wording says this dhuie bottomed out 25kg scales, and at a guess was close to 30kg. Now im sure if I was holding a 30kg dhuie out in front of me I would be straining a little, it also says that weight was gilled and gutted, I wish I had those scales as some of my dhuies would have topped the 50kg mark,Im not sure but this must be the wrong pic ,get a copy and have a look see what you reckon...

Tailor Research

Just finished volunteer research on Tailor.. Over a period of 12 weeks fishing for 2hours one night a week. Approx 1500 Juvenile Tailor were caught and released. With any luck these Tailor will stay in WA waters. We should be in for a bumper season when these tailor reach legal size.

NOR vs SOR Point Peron 2008 Entry List

OK the Mindarie round is done and the SOR round from Point Peron is set for the 10th May as long as the weather plays ball. Ive added the list of boats from the NOR comp to get things started but can everyone check it and alter it as required or add yourself if your going to join in. With the low scoring and points so close from the first round anyone could still Win the Overall Individual Title.

It also means another $10 each so that we can get another pool of prizes together for this round so can everyone get into either OCEANSIDE TACKLE in OCONNOR or COMPLEAT ANGLER JOONDALUP and pay between now and SUNDAY so that we can get the prizes sorted ASAP. Once you have paid please update the list so we know your definately going to join us (This means you too KAL).

Also as a few have asked - If the comp is put off to another date due to the weather and you cant make it on the new date you will be able to get your money back if you wish.

Home-Made Poppers

Yesterday my mate and I made up some poppers for the salmon when we are at Rotto maybe on Saturday seeing as it is dead flat. We attempted many times but failed until we made the perfect two. Now please don't rush to place your orders as we are too busy catching fish on the two mentioned earlier....HAHAHAHAHA

today at covs

Today dad got the day off work so decided to head out to coventrys because it looked good. First of all went about 2k past it and first drop ended up being a 60cm leapord shark which was different. Then a few small blackass and gurnards so deceided to go to the reef to chase some salmon. Threw mulies and lures around for a while and nothing so chucked a little 14g searock for some herring got plenty of them then had 3 yellowtail kings all about 80cm long chase the little searock. Had 3 hookups but they kept spitting the hooks and i only had 8lb braid on a penn applause 4000 with a berkly dropshot 7ft IM6. Then after about an hour of herring i hooked another which was acting very weird darting side to side on the surface i then seen a huge swirl behind the herring and all of a sudden a samson fish or amberjack of at least 2 metres long launched out of the water and hammered the herring and snapped me instantly. I threw a livie out on a float to see if he was still around but nothing for the next hour so decided to pack it in. I have never seen sambos or amberjack do this before just wondering if anyone else has or if anyone else has caught very large sambo/ambos at coventrys?

Salmon Update

Just thought I might start off by mentioning that I was down at Swannie this morning early looking for some Salmon. Went last weekend early and saw what looked to me to be some Salmon trout hearding bait fish in close to shore. Didn't catch any so I went again this morning equiped with my fly rod as it was pretty calm. Didn't see any action although I saw a bloke casting lures around 80m down towards the reef a bit and was hooked up, he dropped it close to shore and when I went to have a chat he said it was a Salmon. Seconds later we saw the school BUT no hook ups. I was using a small storm SP paddle tail and stick baits but nothing..... Just though I should share a bit. As they say, SHARING IS CARING.........

the most awesome scene in tthe river

i was fishing with my dad and my bro at the narrows just than...and we did'nt get a single nibble from anything..for bout two..hours...than we decided to take a drive down to the small jetties around burswood...and we were quietly walking on the jetty..at first i thought i saw a big silver stone in the water...but than after ten minutes i realise it move,...im like ****..its a mulla..in like 1-2ft of water ..saw it so clearly...ran to the car to grab my fishing stuff...and threw out a herring, yellowtail and tailor...trying every bait i have...it went really near it and gave it a bum or two...and just keept doin that for bout an hour....i even tried using fillet of fishes as bait...it was a good 15-20kg mulla...about 1.5m...but it didnt take any at all...and just went away after about 2 hrs...we went home shocked...=O...GONNA GET IT SOON = ]

Fishing Diary's

After another shite night of fishing at Quinns Beach I have decided to start a fishing diary.

So, to all of you much advanced anglers then myself, what  sort of information would you collect? so that the next time you want to go fishing you can check your diary and know if its worth leaving a comfy warm loungeroom for.

Thanks

Shortly.
