shark bay fiesta
Submitted by straith on Wed, 2024-04-10 14:22Ok guys, I just booked Denham in May and only now realised there is a fishing comp festival on at same time.
Just wondering if anyones going this year
and if anyones been up there during it and has any advice re what its like??
Also this is first time for me bringing my boat (5.6 hydrofield 150hp yammy) and im bringing a novice fisherman up.
He asked what he needed to bring as a minimum tackle wise and i realised after listing everything plus the kitchen sink I dont really have a clue what to recommend as a minimum,
i.e enough to cover from fads fishing in to Denham without breaking the bank... he has a few rods and spin reels that will prob cover trolling and some bottom bouncing but hes new to lures and im no oracle either.
Thinking mainly what he absolutely must have so he doesn't miss out too if we hit a purple patch.
I suppose I would have 1 x 24kg combo for stopping big demersals from ducking into holes?
1 x 15kg trolling o/head combo
1x light spin or baitcasting rod for squiddies, whiting, smallish snapper?
we have a large donated supply of soft plastics but need to get variety of jigheads to match.
I have a range of my fav halco laser pros for trolling and I will be topping up my squidtrex supply.
we have a few (literally) metal slice jigs if varying weights.
Any and all advice greatly appreciated,
cheers

Jurien Bay land based spots?
Submitted by beeroclock on Wed, 2024-04-10 12:12Gday guys going on a boys fishing trip with the boat to juriem in a couple of weeks. No doubt we will lose a day or 2 of boating cause of wind/waves. Any advice on where we can go landbased for a few tailor, herring or maybe a mulla. We will have 2 4WD's. I though i read in the past Hill river is worth a fish? is there anywhere else worth a go? even up around green head or leeman cheers dave

Mono line forgotten and underrated?
Submitted by br3nno on Tue, 2024-04-09 21:21I've reverted to including more monofilament line in my armament.
The obvious benefit of braid is longer casts and more line spooled. Plus no stretch if that's what you want.
But I've assembled a 12lb and 20lb outfit. Using Berkley trilene, $13 for 1000m.
The 12lb can cast metal lures and stick baits far enough, maybe 75-85% that of braid. Admittedly the reel and rod are very well balanced and the lures are 30-50 grams.
Then the 20lb setup has been able to pull in big, 10-15kg stingrays. Whilst hunting mulloway.
So what are the pros?
1. 2-5x cheaper
2. Far less wind knots
3. More abrasion resistant. I find braid can "ping".
4. Doesn't fray from casting. I find braid thins after many many casts spinning for tailor and salmon.
5. Also if you are lobbing out 4oz sinkers and half a herring, does braid really matter? I think it adds 4-5m more distance.

OR Marina to Close Ramps for 14+ Months
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Wed, 2024-04-03 10:1614+ months is absolute bullshit. It's already hard enough trying to launch NoR for >$10 a pop and I already don't bother over Xmas anymore. Time to start heading down to Woodies and finding some new ground.

Coral Bay
Submitted by Rowanhill on Tue, 2024-04-02 15:04Hey Crew
Anyone in or just been to Coral Bay? Headed up in a cpl of weeks..just touching base to see if sharks are manageable etc.
Also, any FW members got any tips on where to get Occys in CB- need something to do in the spare time. Im thinking the cliffs with shallow reefs 5-10 kms south would be a good start on a low tide?
Heard the squid are in good numbers too in the normal Five fingers area
thanks

Why is Marmion reef so uneventful (shore fishing)
Submitted by br3nno on Mon, 2024-04-01 18:51I'm talking North Beach area, from the MAAC club to Trigg. For tailor.
Also chuck Iluka and Burns beach in the mix.
In theory all the structure and reef should produce. But the only time I get tailor is when I fish on the sandy/southern side of Trigg. Once a 62cm model.
throwing lures around Marmion reef has caught me more wrasse than tailor.
Does anyone else share this view?

Coral Bay 21 to 26 April
Submitted by Ericl on Mon, 2024-04-01 10:28Hi
I will be in Coral Bay from 21 to 26 April. Would love a fishing trip if anyone needs a deckie on these dates. Happy to pay my share of expenses, contribute beer, snacks etc. Have all my own gear and I am reasonably experienced having fished Coral bay a number of times before. Also have my own boat and fish frequently in Perth.
Also taking a Kayak and am hoping to get some pointers as to where to try for squid from the Kayak. Used to squid land based in Coral Bay in the early 90s and did OK, but I cant remember where that was. Cheers for any help with this

Easter
Submitted by sea-kem on Wed, 2024-03-27 11:43With Good Friday looking like a belter weather wise I have no doubt there'll be a flotilla on the water.
What's everyone's plans? I'm hoping to hit the 50m mark where I haven't been for quite a while.
Solunar calendar saying 51% fishing efficiency, in other words fish have half a chance lol.
Will float Mulies out there too in that last hope of a Mack, saying that up to Gnaraloo early May so will gte my fix there fingers crossed.

Balloon fishing setup
Submitted by br3nno on Wed, 2024-03-20 21:28Hey gents,
Planning a trip to the mid west and want to do some balloon fishing.
I have a couple heavy spin reels with 50lb and 65lb line, but they "only" have 250-300m on them.
Also rod setup is the penn powercrank 10-15kg. Which admittedly handles much more weight than this.
But my concern is if the line length is enough?
How far do you let you balloon out? Rod and rel setup?
Any general advice welcomed.
Thanks!!

searched the Net with no joy

Moorings Geographe Bay
Submitted by greyheads1 on Sun, 2024-03-10 20:58Does anyone have any idea what's the go with the moorings down in Geographe Bay... more specifically east/north of Abbey boat ramp. I was down that way over Xmas and noted lots of holidayers boats moored up. Down there couple of weeks ago and all free. I would usually end up in old dunsborough with the kids over Easter but if I'm further that way the place we stay doesn't have enough room for boat on trailer.
cheers
South Coast Marine Parks & Sanctuary Zones
Submitted by Wes F on Fri, 2024-03-08 08:35Morning All,
I've been watching Gido's fishing adventures for al while now and enjoy his content.
In the video he put out as per link below he speaks about purposed marine parks and sanctuary zones for the south coast.
He made a few very good points so i had a quick red and look at some of the maps and layouts this morning.
I think recreational beach fish has little to no impact on fish stocks so should be allowed along the whole coast.
Interesting some of the sanctuary zones are along th ebeach where inlets break out and inculde the inlet itself

Support the locals and get the messsage out.
