Boat Insurance

 Gday all,

Any recommendations for boat insurance for a $18'000 Ali 17ft.

Have been with RAC but their new changes mean my policy almost doubled in cost to remain the same.

Paying the same as last 4 years means a significant drop in agreed value and a big excess.

Not impressed, who are others using??

Thanks in advance

Pb snapper.

Headed out last weeken for a fish within the 3 mile for some snapper. Interestingly, we got about 10 minutes out of the marina, and noticed a splash just ahead. Stopped the boat, and out of nowhere a bloody Spanish mack jumps straight out of the water. Was only a few meters from the bow of the boat and jumped as high as the roof! Quickly whacked out an unweighted mulie, and within a minute it started screaming!   was ecstatic thinking I had my first metro mack, but also wondering why it hadn't bitten through my 40lb trace. Got it to the boat and realised it was a big snap lol.

went 93cm, pretty stoked with that!

unfortunately couldn't find the Mack.

ps. Please ignore the fishing pants!

Been visited before I am sure, but best crab bait

 Hi all

Just wondered again about the go to bait for crabbing. Cleaned out the bait freezer and found some 100yo squid bait at the bottom. Decided to just ditch it but then thought I wonder how this would go as crab bait. Tested it on a run with five pots with the trusted chicken necks and 5 with the old squid, and was very surprised. It way outfished the necks!!

Every string delivered more crabs on the squid. Now I wouldnt use that due to $$$ but if I have some old stuff left will use it again for sure.

Anyone else used odd crab bait with success and what is the go to??

Fishing Darwin

 G'day,

Going up to Darwin for work and taking the Tomcat with me.

Any tips on fishing blue water out of the boat chasing reds/trout ect.

Tides don't look too big but assuming this will affect bottom bouncing once running?

any inside or locals i can catch up with would be appreciated!

found tackle bag @ hillarys

If you can accurately describe it, where left and what's in it, I can return it to you!!

Trip possession limits per the latest recreational fishing guide

Hi all.

It may have been covered in previous posts, but i've just noticed the current revision of the recreational fishing guide mentions the following:

A boat limit is the maximum number of fish of a species or group of species that may be on a boat or attached to a boat (including tender vessels) at any one time. This limit applies regardless of how long the vessel is at sea.

I could have sworn the previous guides allowed for 2 days bag limit if overnighting, however, this is not highlighted as a change to the rules in the opening pages of the guide.  Can anyone confirm if this is a change?

The current revision of the guide also mentions the following:

Exceptions to the general finfish possession limit

Overnight charter trip

The finfish possession limit if you are on, or have just completed, an extended fishing tour involving overnight accommodation on a charter boat and the fish were taken during the course of the tour, is;

• 20 kg of fillets of any species; OR

• 10 kg of fillets and one day’s bag limit of whole fish or fish trunks; OR

• 2 days’ bag limit of whole fish or fish trunks.

Both of the above statements combined suggest anyone doing extended trips offshore (eg Rotto or Monties or Mackies) are only entitled to come home with 1 day's bag limit or 10kg of fillets.  Thoughts?  Imagine how ridiculous it would be getting stung by Fisheries on the way home from Rotto because of a rule that IMO makes absolutely no sense.

Four sub 50cm dhuies on scuba straight hook

Came across a situation recently where someone had speared four sub 50cm dhuies on scuba.  Given that the removal of the size limit and extension of boat limit from 2 to 4 for dhuies was only introduced to mitigate the barotrauma loss issues what are peoples thoughts on this given that spearos, as they always brag, can be selective in a way that line fishing cant.

any one else getting these

Went out the back of the FF south of coventries last night and got a mixed bag. Skippy shark and under sized snapper. But the most unusal catch was a catfish ( silver cobble, frok tail catfish. i have caught these at karratha but have never seen them down here, Anyone else caught one?

Puerto Vallarta fishing report January 2024

Happy Fishmas and a joyful New Year from Puerto Vallarta! Let’s dive into the January 2024 fishing report by Captain Pete and see what the Puerto Vallarta waters of Mexico have in store for our anglers visiting from all over the globe. The holiday season has treated us well with an abundance of big catches, including mahi-mahi, action-packed sailfish, yellowtail, Spanish mackerel, roosterfish, and some snapper. If you’re curious about where and how to catch these pelagic fish, look no further—we’ve got you covered.Mexico sailfish action with Capt. Pete Winter fishing in Puerto Vallarta has helped us with some scorching days on the water, accompanied by cool and refreshing mornings. The winter weather here is nothing short of heavenly, with temperatures starting at a comfortable 65 degrees and reaching 78 deg. later in the day—a perfect recipe for an exceptional fishing experience. While the Pacific Ocean cools down a bit in January, locals affectionately refer to it as “cold water,” but don’t be deceived; temperatures hover around a pleasant 65 to 78 degrees. While many folks in the north have winterized their boats and stored away their fishing gear, we are just getting started in Puerto Vallarta. As the water cools, some pelagic fish migrate or move offshore. The big blue and black marlin, favoring slightly warmer waters, may venture to different areas offshore. However, this doesn’t mean we won’t catch them; it simply means there are fewer of them around. When the big marlin moves to warmer waters we have the arrival of the striped marlin to take its place. Sailfish, mahi-mahi, tuna, and yellowtail will still provide thrilling offshore action, while amberjack and roosterfish are making their presence known. The use of a large Spanish mackerel as a teaser is a handy trick to lure in roosterfish. Please check out our competitive prices for 2024 In January, we’re greeted by schools of sardines throughout the bay and offshore, significantly boosting our inshore and offshore fishing opportunities. The sight of massive bait balls often leads to non-stop fishing until your arms feel like they might give out. The next few months will see even more bait entering the bay. Offshore, we typically troll for striped marlin, which are drawn to the cooler water temperatures. mahi-mahi fishing in Puerto Vallarta winter time During offshore trolling, having a couple of live baits (commonly called “Google eye”) ready is crucial. Spotting dorado, sailfish, or striped marlin fining on the surface is a thrilling moment, and deploying live bait during tide changes often results in successful catches. Inshore fishing in January offers diverse opportunities, including trolling, jigging, bottom fishing, and live baiting. The key is to monitor daily conditions such as temperature changes, water clarity, and bait movement. Finding the bait is the golden ticket to a successful fishing outing, with fast-feeding yellowtail, tasty Spanish mackerel, California bonitas, and snapper ready for the taking on our 6-hour bay trips. The fantastic offshore fishing starts for the 8-hour trip and beyond. Up to 3-day trips offshore. As an extra treat during the winter months, Puerto Vallarta welcomes humpback whales to its waters. Picture hooking a massive fish and then witnessing a 20-ton, 40-foot-long whale swimming right beside your boat—it’s a common occurrence here! Check out this fishing action with bonus whale watching So, come on down and revel in this winter wonderland we call home—Puerto Vallarta, where the friendliest people in the world live.

Merry Fishmas and Happy New Year!

Where is the best place NOR to get decent bait?

Taking up fishing again after a few years off and wondered where the best place to get bait is?

The selection in my local BCF and Anaconda stores is pretty poor.

Preferably North of the River.

Thanks in Advance

Crabbing

Hey guys, might be a silly question, but is there a car limit for crabs from mandurah? Driving down with 2 mates on the weekend. I know it's 10 per person when scooping. I know that it's 20 per boat. ( we won't be boating), but just wanted to make sure all good if we take 7 or 8 each and transport them back In the same car? Not looking to smash anything, just enough for dinner for each immediate family.

cheers!

jumbos

I moved my pots out 3 mile behind the five fathom after a dismal whits season Got some good jumbo's. A bit tough on the chew but still nice dusted the tails .flour salt pepper and shalow fried after slicing the tail in half the rest into the pickling jar. The biggest one i got was 142 mm i should have weighed it but it was to late when i thought about it. Still a jumbo jumbo, and its not that far behind the five fathom. No fish though dead as a corpse three days old.

An interesting morning

Left CPBA at sparrows for my first fish of the year. What an eventful morning, headed out to a favourite area some 20nm west of Garden Island. Found some great show on the sounder so, whilst rigging up a couple of rods dropped the only one that was ready. Instant hook up but a gold spot sweet lip was not something I wanted so quick release and motor back to the start of the drift.  Hmmmmmm, not motoring anywhere, whilst all the boat electrics were operating the motor and guages were dead. Nothing.   Quick call to Marine Rescue Cockburn who heard me despite the distance I was out and was told it will be a while to get crew together and get out to me.  sea anchor out to slow the drift from the co-ords I had given. Oh well ground looks ok drop a bait or two while waiting. Actually dropped three, a mulie, occy, and one of those weird lead heads with plastic occy. Instant triple hookup, all of which turned out to be those rare and endangered dhu, 5, 7 and a fat fat 10.  The 5 quickly returned and swam off strongly.   Then had a boring 45 minute wait for Avail and the crew.
Thanks again for the great service MRC Brett and crew

Thanks to one of our sponsors, Luke at Chivers Marine arranged for a technician to meet me at the ramp so we could tilt up the motor using an auxiliary power supply direct to the trim motor ...... now that's service !

Last few trips out

In amongst the easterlies and southerlies blowing the dog off the chain we've had a few good trips out of Bunno. Also we've caught good size baldies, a hammerhead that was released and a bronzie thats in the freezer, and the big squid that was on the bottom in 37m.

Last few days

Took missus out yesterday ( dhue bash) done well doesn’t look it but dhue went 9,4 kg . Pretty good first ever dhue trip. Got some thumper black ass. This morn quick trip for bait , getting rid of swifty soon going to get bigger boat . Time for upgrade

No boat no worries

With the wind finally looking to be down on Saturday morning, the original plan was to punch out for a fish in the boat..... In the end, I was too lazy and got out of bed a bit late so opted to just go for a beach bash instead. Driving through town looked like every man and his dog were heading out in the boats so glad I missed the commotion at the ramps!

Back down to the beach with a small shovel to collect some ghosties and straight into it. Was pretty slow for the first hour but then started to turn on. The bluebone takes are very distinct. A premature strikes to try and keep the fish from burying me straight in the reef so didn't manage to set hooks and was cursing myself. Shortly after, got the hookup on a good fish but completely straightened hook with my drag at full lock. New hook and back into it, getting a medium size fish shortly after. Adamant this fish was too small to be the culprit, I was back out there for another crack. Shortly after again, a huge take and I was convinced I must have been back onto the same fish. Plenty of close calls during the fight with the constant feeling of the leader on reef but eventually managed to drag the fish to the beach.... This hook had only just held on also!

Quick pack-up and back home for a 2.5hour round trip. Wouldn't dream of making that time for a boat mission so in the end, it paid to be lazy! Shot out to Bundegi for a dip around lunch time and the ramp was absolute chaos.

Freshwater Fishing in Bremer/Gairdner Rivers

 Hi all,

I've just recently moved to Bremer Bay and was curious if anyone has fished the upper freshwater reaches of the Bremer and Gairdner River systems, is there Marron or fish to be caught??
