Jurien Bay
Submitted by Pezdog on Thu, 2014-09-04 10:48Hey guys
Heading to Jurien in a few weeks and looking for some advice on best spots to fish?
Had a search around and some good tips there but not too recent. Anyone been lately with an update on the weed as well?
Will be landbased and no 4wd.
I have heard the jetty is as good a place as any but will be very busy so anywhere slightly secluded to relax and have a frothy without the hassle of tangling up with others?
Cheers

Rigs for livebaiting out wide
Submitted by beau on Wed, 2014-09-03 18:42Hey guys just wondering what rigs you suggest when using livebaits from the boat. Planning on fishing around the 20m and 40m mark using herring size baits with a single pinned behind the head going for sambos. Dont really want to use a patternoster I think I'll get too many tangles on the drop.
Im thinking of going a meter or two of leader from the hook to a swivel, than more leader up to the mainline with a teardrop sinker or something similar clipped to the swivel.
Cheers

fishing options aroung Torbay down south
Submitted by old salt on Tue, 2014-09-02 21:27Hey fellas, I've booked a place in Torbay between Albany and Denmark over summer and would love some local knowledge about land based options that are reasonably safe. What fish could I target in the summer months? I don't have a 4wd and will have the old man on tow and would love for him to land a few fish. How snaggy are the rock platforms generally and what could one expect to catch of the beaches early morning and at dusk? Many thanks Old Salt.

Hornet Still Happy - 40+kg of Questionable Quality
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2014-09-02 20:40After our return to the water on Saturday (http://www.fishwrecked.com/forum/back-water-25kg-quality), we just had to get out there again. YPM had an Elimination Final at 1pm Sunday but the plan was to go after that and see what the “pinking hour” produced, as we sacrificed this for a tailor troll around near shore reef the day before (yes, they won which puts a further dent on our Sunday missions but this weekend doesn’t look that good on the water anyway).
The forecast for Sunday arvo wasn’t great but the wind was predicted to drop below moderate around sunset and into the night – yeah right. In what was not the best conditions, we fished our “floaters” on light gear on the spot that had produced nicely all afternoon the day before. The “expert Hornet repairer” came out with us again to ensure the work was up to scratch!
The tally was 5 sambos from 7-12kg, 2 pinks (495mm and 430mm), 2 dhu (530mm and 470mm), a couple of skippy (over 1kg) and a number of assorted non-desirable species, plus bust offs. A very enjoyable few hours on the water, even with the wind and waves. We released everything alive and swimming, except the legal dhu which understandably became fillets for the better half as soon as we got home.
No doubt the highlight was YPM landing a sambo that exceeded the line class. 20 minutes into the fight he was whining about the pain following a hard game of footy, but it was worth it when his PB was landed (>1m). For a 14 year old that works hard on his fishing it is nice to see him get the results. We really did appreciate the qualities of the Hornet that allow landing big angry fish on light gear and it was well worth fixing.

The next task is to dive this spot with a Go Pro (the repairer has a deep dive qualification) to try and understand why it produces what it does.

mullas on the chew
Submitted by tangles on Tue, 2014-09-02 17:12after the constant swell we have had up here its been impossible to fish the banks for mullas so whiting has been the go. The swell finally dropped cpl days ago and my friend marie was set to catch her biggest fish and biggest mulla.
Seeing she only fishes LB and only catches herring from woody ptits a treat for her to come up n fish with crazy ol me!
Took her to a always reliable local beach and as the sun dropped on came themullas.1st one she landed was 700. nxt a mini me then her rod buckled and tge fun began! Took her a while and when I saw this donkey wash up I was pretty stoked for her. 17kg croaker which was nearly as big as her and she was knackered. I managed a 12kg one n a soapie and we were all done by 8.20!
So stoked to see people catch a fish of a lifetime and makes you realise how lucky you are to be able to get them often!
Def one of my fav mulla spots which is tucked away but still close to home!
Awsome night with one stoked young lady!!

Back on the Water - 25kg of Quality
Submitted by Mick C on Sat, 2014-08-30 23:11After the last MAAC monthly completion, where YPM took out the Juniors for the second month running, the Hornet had taken on a lot of water. The bilge pump was accidentally left on overnight and blew up so there was no more fishing until the source of the water was found. A good search for the source revealed a large crack in the keel and there was no option but to get it fixed.
A plea for help to a well-known FW member and a recommendation of an expert marine fabricator was received. The initial advice was that keel cracks don’t just happen and that the boat must be stripped back to find out why. Good advice, which we followed, and when it was pulled apart the picture was not pretty. Lots of structural cracking in the ribs and repair was essential. In real terms, the hull was probably a write off. We will leave the cause but let’s just say that some of the cracks were quite old.
The fabricator is a very keen fisho but all of the experience is catching awesome pelagics around Exmouth, with some monster Sambos and Macks in Perth, but with limited success on demersals and in particular the pinks. After inspection, we struck a deal whereby he would fully repair the hull, and many other things that needed doing, for a very reasonable price if I would pass on the techniques that we had used to catch pinks in Perth waters. What a good deal as the Hornet is a “dream boat” to fish off and a new hull would have cost a lot.
The last two weekends have been some of the best winter fishing conditions I have seen. Stuck at home with no boat wasn’t easy but the knowledge that the boat was being fixed properly got me through. It was good to read the excellent reports of Member’s success over the period, but I would rather have been out there.
The repair job was awesome. Along the way we also improved the Hornet by placing safety gear in easy reach, giving a lot of “love” to the Minn Kota replacing non water proof elements including an on-board battery charger, and repairing everything else. The boat was picked up on Friday in a very good state.
So, to get out there. My part of the deal was to take him out to catch a “legal” pink and after a couple of weeks off the water we were keen as. A trip was planned for Saturday morning, subject to weather. At 5am Saturday it was crap. A flurry of text messages from 5am postponed with a commitment to watch the weather. To our surprise, and against the forecast, it improved during the day and whilst not ideal, a midday launch seemed feasible.
Given the “desire to go” we headed out. Conditions were not perfect, as they rarely are, but a slow trip out about 5 miles got us to a spot I had marked a few months ago with pro cray pots on it. The rest is history. We had a great afternoon and pulled in 25kg of quality. It was an excellent effort of perseverance by the “expert repairer” to fish our pink technique relentlessly, "out of hours", whilst we were doing well with other techniques for different species. To his credit, the pink did come along midafternoon and although it was not a monster it was “legal”. How good is that – WA fishing for us continues to produce and we now have a fishing mate for life. I think the boat was happy!

Coral Bay
Submitted by jayce on Sat, 2014-08-30 20:35HI all
We had some minute change of plans and instead of making it into Ningaloo Station we will be spending our time in Coral Bay.
My uncle made it into Ningaloo and said it was a 4 and a half hour trip in and we decided that with 3 kids under 2 Years old we wouldnt risk it in case something happened.
Just wondering if some one could give me some pointers on Coral Bay. I have been looking at my navionics app but doesnt show much feature around here.
I would try the search function but thats not easy to use on your phone.
Cheers in advance.

2007 Nissan X-Trail ST Manual vs Jeep Cheerokee 2007
Submitted by Shane O on Sat, 2014-08-30 19:53Hi guys,
looking at the above to cars and have been told buy a lot of people that jeep parts are expensive and to stay away from them. Found reviews for the x-trail 07 manual diesel and the reviews were quite good. Looking for a AWD/4wd doesn't need to be a massive 4wd, looking to spend between 15k and 20k.

Stella SWB4000XG Drag
Submitted by Ectopic on Sat, 2014-08-30 19:47Has anyone got experience with the drags in these reels?
I was just spooling up a mytho/stella combo I recently bought from Oceanside and noticed a very STICKY drag.
Thought *damn* I've got a trip planned tomorrow, lets open up the drag stack and see what the trouble is. I wiped away the excess grease and it is much smoother, but I'm surprised that the drag washers aren't some sort of carbon!
