Dirk Hartog Lodge boat fishing
Submitted by bumsy clugger on Mon, 2021-05-17 09:35Hi all,
We're heading for the lodge in July and taking a boat with us. I have never been to Dirk Hartog and was wondering what the boat fishing is like in the bay heading North from the lodge? Any chance of catching pelagics in the bay or do you need to go south round the channel to get ocean side west of the island?
Cheers, Kev

Fish at the south mole
Submitted by M.an I. L.ove F... on Sun, 2021-05-16 09:44Hey guys
first post on the site and just looking for some help regarding what these fish ive been seeing might be.
Ive been heading to the south mole recently to pick up squid for big baits for the river and been seeing heaps of 3 - 5kg fish cruising close to the rocks. ive seen them in packs of 2 or 3 and sometimes just by themselves. my best guess would be mullet but hoping they might be some early season salmon, which might explain why theyre popping up only in small packs. plus ive only ever seen mullet in schools of 10+ and never outside of the river. never bothered to have a crack at them coz the gear that i take down for squid probly wouldnt stand up to them very well. any info or opinions would be great.
Also any tips on squidding from the rock walls around freo would be awesome as i only seem to be catching the littler ones and never more than 4 every 2 hour session
thanks

South Mole
Submitted by maldugs on Thu, 2021-05-13 14:22Hi, went for a fish at the South Mole on Thursday, when I got there it was a carpark, BUT, all the cars were empty, and nobody fishing off the rocks, no room to park my car anywhere, so I gave up, who is parking thier car there and leaving it? Was a pain.

How long have you made your electric reel leads
Submitted by black gen on Thu, 2021-05-13 05:37Currently we are using individual small batteries for our 3 electric reels
looking at running 1 big battery with 3 reels coming off that
as it is now we can use the normal leads as batteries live in side pocket but with 1 big battery it would be a bit further away and we would need longer leads
question is how long has anyone made their leads and they are still effective?
do they suffer from voltage drop?
Any dramas with using Anderson plugs?
cheers

A Couple of PBs
Submitted by The Saint on Wed, 2021-05-12 19:36A couple of PBs from a trip to Shark Bay a couple of weeks back, one for my 12 year old grandson with a pinkie that went 70cm (his previous was around 68cm).
This one he managed on a rod & reel without assistance (last one was on an Alvey winch).
And a 66cm bluebone for myself, previous PB was WAY smaller !

Trim tabs - your thoughts?
Submitted by beeroclock on Wed, 2021-05-12 14:15Gday guys, ive just finished a complete refurbish of a voyager marquis (old school 7.2m fibreglass ) and done pod extension after removing the big old chev v8 inboard. Whacked a new 4st 250hp yamaha on , sea trialed a few times and i couldnt be happier with her. Ive had 6 smaller boats previously and none of them ever had trim tabs. I know the main reason for trim tabs is to level boat off if its leaning due to poor weight distribution. Apart from that is there any other good reason to add trim tabs? Its just that ive always found uneven weight distribution is not to hard to solve by moving gear around. any pro's and con's for trim tabs greatly appreciated cheers dave

bloody sharks
Submitted by piscetor on Tue, 2021-05-11 22:42I've been out the five lately snapper fishing and have been doing ok, but has any one else been out there and noticed the apparent increase in shark activity. I have fished the back of the five for a lot of years and never seen as many bronzies as i have lately.
i have been getting three or four hook ups every time, it's a pain in the proverbial. To say nothing of a waste of snapper fishing time.

Harlequin saves the day
Submitted by Pob on Sat, 2021-05-08 17:31Out early this morning to throw some plastics around behind Garden Island, just drifting over some nice looking spots was getting to the stage mid morning where I was thinking that I couldn't even catch a cold when I finally hooked a reasonable size wrasse, decided bugger the plastics and cut the wrasse up and put it on a bottom meat, half hour later landed my PB harlequin, one of my favourite eating fish.

VHF radio recommendations
Submitted by aaasnapper on Thu, 2021-05-06 13:16Hi guys in the market for a new VHF radio c/w aerial.
For the radio I am contemplating the uniden um455 or the icom ic m330ge.
The Icom based on previous post are the way to go. However, it will involve more work for install as the hole in the dash will need to be filled.
The uniden um455 appears to tick all the boxes including a straight forward install into existing dash slot. However, I am unsure of there quality/ performance. Any feedback on this unit will be appreciated.
The next question is the antenna to pair it with. I am thinking 2.4m 6db ?

Trip to Walpole / Nornalup
Submitted by Browny on Wed, 2021-05-05 19:14

Just got back from an extended weekend break from Walpole/Nornalup.
We head down that way at least twice every year, and have done so for over 20 years now. This time we took my Mum down for a break from covid reality Perth! (She's 84 and just LOVE'S her fishing!!)
Fishing was awesome to say the least.
(As I've recently sold my boat, we were shore based but it mattered little.)
Over the 3 days I estimate over 200 bream, with anything under 27-28cm released. (plus some over that when we had enough for dinner + some take home's!)
The biggest was stonker at a tad over 38cm (mum's!), with another slightly under that (mine!), and the missus's was level pegging with that. (we enjoy sharing the spoils!heehhe)
Also caught tailor, herring, silver bream and a juvenile salmon all in the same spot.
One of Western Australia's best family fishing spots I reckon - have never failed to get a good feed in over 2 decades!
(Have even caught a couple of giant herring from the Frankland River 2 & 3 years ago.)
Anyway enjoy the piccs, and think of them grilled whole with Asian spices as thats how we cook them - Yummo!
Cheers.
Browny.

If so any tips on the general area in the bay to troll would be appreciated also what type lure have people had success with in there cheers dave
