Rods and reels for boating
Submitted by Jan Kapp on Sun, 2012-05-20 16:52I'm an experienced surf angler, but want to go boating. I want to buy all the gear and extra's first before bying a boat. What rod and reel combo's is suited the best for fishing around Perth and Rotto. I would be looking at bottom fishing, spinning and game fishing. I am a big shimano fan and am keaning towards TLD's or Tyrnos and T-curve rods. Do I go mono or braid? What additional extra's is needed and is a must have?

fishing this morning
Submitted by robert1979 on Sun, 2012-05-20 10:08Got up early this morning and went for a fish on the beach just north of cottelsoe. Finally caught a whiting (third attempt - no sniggering!) also got a flat head measuring 38cm which I was quite pleased with. Then picked up a decent sized herring by mistake when I cast out way too far and started to retrieve. I started off using small bits of red meat but was getting nothing so switched to those squidgy red worms things cut in half. Then was getting loads of bites but only caught the three fish mentioned above.
Is it best to strike when they bite or wait till they hook themselves? Hooks were small long shanks, would another type of hook help? Maybe my technique is the problem :)
Anyway nice to get out of the house and herring/flathead for lunch, cant complain.

lost my first hookup
Submitted by parry123 on Sat, 2012-05-19 19:57hey everyone today i decided to try out a jetty in my local estuary, threw out a slimey mac and in 5 minutes i was hooked, after about a minute the hooks must of slipped witch was really annoying but my im starting to think now if it was just a fluke or just a dodgey hook up? i was using mustad hoodlum 8/0 hooks and im pretty sure i was hooked on a ray of some sort so im wondering if theres a propper way of setting hooks in a ray?

Pink Snapper In The Sound
Submitted by metroLBfisher on Sat, 2012-05-19 19:04Heading out early tomorrow morning with a mate, wondering if anyone has had much luck with pinkys inside the sound yet?
Going first light and not going out past G.I, hoping they are in a bit closer and can try snag a few on first sunlight.
Be interesting to know if anyone has got some lately.

Albany islands advice
Submitted by Tankisnowfishing on Sat, 2012-05-19 18:43Dragged the boat down on Friday night to see my bro and family. Took him out to the islands today , my first time out down here too.
Caught something every drift in about 30m but all undersize pinkies doh.... Any locals got any tips on depths, would heading to 50 increase my chances of getting size fish?
Thinking after a glorious day on the water, great being able to come in at speed sat on about 28 kn all the way back. Thinking we might need to move down here I think as the sounder was going off, heaps of bait balls around, had a troll on the way out but no big ones around. Was hoping for a salmon or two, will have to try again tomorrow.

PR Knot
Submitted by Cameron71 on Fri, 2012-05-18 17:39PR KNot
Does anyone use these for spinning reels for casting? I have been using the slim beauty which holds really well, but have just learnt the PR Knot and am thinking of changing over the leaders on my spinning reels.
Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.

Wish me luck
Submitted by soupster51 on Fri, 2012-05-18 17:36I'm back from my island until next Thursday doing a refit on the Micronesian patrol boat. I'm heading down to Hinchenbrook tomorrow to chase barra, jacks and threadfin. I've never caught a barra or a threadfin, wish me luck FWers. The water is a little cool so I think we'll be using livies on the bottom, easier beer drinking conditions.

Live aboard Charter for 60th B'day
Submitted by Jaf on Fri, 2012-05-18 14:17Hi all,
I'm just wondering what your preference would be for a live aboard charter? My old man is turning 60 next year and the family has decided to book one for him for his B'day. Thoughts i have had so far are Monte's, Abrolhos and potentially Rowley shoals (pending how much his mates etc want to spend). Basically what time of year, good operators etc. Would like to do a variety of fishing from bottom fishing, GT, Macks etc Any help or info to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Brad

Eshed
Submitted by Sisterfish on Fri, 2012-05-18 09:17Hi I am wondering if some of you could help with a few questions I have in regards to Mulla fishing. I am fishing tonight at Eshed and have been there before but not targeted Mulloway specifically so I want to know:
1) Can they be caught on a gang with mullies or would a single hook with different bait be better
2) I was thinking of using a tri swivel type setup with the sinker coming off one prong and the bait off the other or should it be something with a running sinker and roughly what size sinker to make it stay out there
I read the forums all the time and just wanted to say thanks to all of you who offered advice to my previous question about fishing and fines :)

Freo Tomorrow
Submitted by bandage.boy on Thu, 2012-05-17 18:50Fremantle this friday
Hi all.
Brand new to fishing and thought I would head out to Fremantle this friday. I have a 8' jetty rod and a bunch of tackle that i don't know much about
any tips about where to go and what bait/rig I should be using, and what to expect would be really really appreciated.
The bug has bitten, but it would be even better if a few fish would bite!!
Thanks in advance.
