General Fishing Chat

Deepdene

I have to go visit my partners rellies in Augustra in a couple of weeks, thinking of detouring to Deepdene for a night.

Has anyone been out there lately, whats the beach like for access/driving and any fish around.

Thanks

what to do?

I have a mate who purchased a highend fishing reel off the internet. He received it this morning with a broked reel foot. It looks as though it was broken during transport and insufficent packaging and padding seems to be the cause. Would it be the companies fault that they didnt package it properly, or would it be Fedex's fault that they were careless in transporting the reel? who would you direct your claim to??

New guy

Hey everyone just wanted to introduce my self and just abit of info about me so my names ash i'm 23 been fishing for a long time I live in Port Kennedy and this may sound weird but even if i don't catch anything i'm still happy been out there. I'm currently land based so i fish anywhere i can really and I used to live near broome where I really got into fishing so yer thats pretty much it.

hello

hi guys love the site heaps of useful information and advice

so being new hear i should introduce myself most people call me brenno most of my recreational fishing time has been spent up north in the pilbara but i have worked on commercial fishing boats of the south coast of nz and antarctica when i was younger and also have done a couple of prawn seasons up in the gulf as well currently i normally work offshore and have heaps of marine and boating experience including boat repairs maintenance painting wiring etc i can also get gunnel rubber and perspex relativly cheap so if you need you boat windows replacing or new gunnel rubber hit me up im more han willing to share my knowledge

i have just started fishing in the metro area so any useful advice would be good im slowly replacing most of my tackle as there was nothing smaller than an 8/0 hook in there before lol i use a 6 yr old starlo stick with a corvalus 400 overhead with 80lb braid and have just bought a smaller flick rod with 8lb mono

hoping to get out as often as i can no particular sort that im chasing as i mostly catch and release anyway unless its a decent snapper or mackie

look forward to seeing and meeting some of you guys out and about

cheers brenno

Marine Radio Advice Request

I know that the 2 marine radios of choice seem to be the 27meg and the VHF for close offshore boats.

Need some advice on the choice of radio for general chit chat between a couple boats of the same fishing crew. The most the two boats would be apart is about 4 to 7km in exmouth area. Can you/or do you use a VHF radio for this type of banter if so what channel.

Or do you advise the use of the 27 meg instead?? Currently of our boats-one boat has the 27meg the other VHF. We have tried handhelds UHF radios but they tend to be useless. We are trying to work out the best way to go re radios for normal banter between our boats. Just not sure of the legality or protocol for the use of VHF re general chat??

Any advice appreciated.

Lift offered Perth to Exmouth 1st May or Exmouth to Perth 7th May

Hey all,

My brother and I are heading up to Exmouth for a weeks fishing, leaving afternoon of 1st May (arriving morning 2nd May) and returning on 7th May (arriving Perth late evening/night) and are offering a lift for one or two people for a share of the fuel costs (thinking $80 each way for one person or $120 for two).

Will be travelling in a near new Nissan Patrol and towing a tinny. Both mature (30s), easy going guys and experienced drivers. If you're interested, drop me a PM and let me know which direction(s) your interested in and maybe a quick bit about yourself so we know that you're not an axe murderer.

Navman

Hey all

Just seeing who has a navman colour sounder? I have a 4600 that came with my boat and just wanting to see people experiences with them. It has a 50/200khz transom mounted transducer 600w. Also wondering you the auto functions are any good or people are getting more success with manually setting the gain, range ect. I'm not too sure I trust it that much when sounding for fish, sometimes it has displayed large fish, I have dropped a line and nothing at all.

Thanks

Karratha Iron Ore ships catching/killing sailfish

2 times this month i heard and seen photos of crew aboard the iron ore ships off karratha hauling sailfish up the back of the ships, (cliff gaff).

From what i have heard:

A) Foreign ships cannot catch fish in australian waters?

B) Would they need a fishing license?

The fella showing me the photos said he spoke to fisheries and they cant do anything about it...

Thoughts?

What is one thing you will never cheap out on? and one thing you would.

one thing i never cheap out on is Squid jigs. even though i lose plently, i just cant bring myself to buy a $3 jarvis walker jig.

One thing i dont mind cheaping out on is terminal tackle, like hooks, sinkers, swivles etc. i will more often than not buy the mustards, mako hooks over the gamakatsu's and black magics.

Boat stability issues

Hello........I have a 474 stacer with 40 horsepower johnson.......my problem is that when im going at any sort of speed it always wants to lean to one side.......my load is evenly distributed and sits level when not underway......only happens at speed.......what could be causing this???.........

Mindari Sambos???

Hey guys just had a few questions about the small reef that runs up for around 50m literally north of mindari marina or the northern shore line...

I have a friend who does landbased spear-fishing and he told me that he's seen a few sambos crusing in and out of the harbour mostly around 5 - 10kg

just wondering if anyone else knows about them and to make sure its true before i go for them :P

if it is true what tackle and rigs do u recomend for landbased sambo fishing, i presume live-baiting of herring or mullet... with a balloon or float???

so what pound line and leader and size hooks????

any help will be appriciated :)

cheers

Pinjarra river?

Hey guys/ girls
Pinjarra river, not sure of the proper name, it's the river that runs next to pinjarra, any way my question is , would there be redfin perch in there, or can anyone point me in a direction where I could find same, not to far away from Perth, 1-2 hour max, and do I need a fresh water licence to target them, anything would be great guys.
Cheers in advance

Soft plastics

I'm new to fishing soft plastics and interested to hear what you guys think of them. Like what are your favourite colours, sizes, jighead weights and what species do you target with them? Also what do you find is the max depth you can fish them?

Exmouth GTs - where to get some

Gday fellas

Up in exmouth at the moment and looking to throw some sticks and poppers but not sure exactly where to go. the weather has blew up a little so hope to get out later in the week. the weather has been great but the fishing has been a bit ordinary until yesterday when we raised and succesfully released a small black about 7 foot long caught on a jig 400 and trinidad 30a,50lb braid. this will be the highlight of the trip. we came across some coral ground at the back of tantabidi down just south of south passage in 6:8m of water coming to the ocesn side of the reef, we think this may hold some GTs. any thoughs will be greatlyl appreciated.

cheers neville

reel service.

 Hey guys.

i think my stella 5k is up for a service.

just want to know where would be the place to get this done.

i dont want to take it just anywhere, i want to get it properly done. dont mind paying the extra dollars for a good job.

sending it to shimano would be last choice.

cheers guys.

Struggling to let go - old faithful - Fraser 595

 Crew,

Almost need a shoulder to cry or at least some reassuring haha

Finally about to take the plunge and get rid of my first true love - the first boat I paid my own hard earns for - my Fraser 595

Bought new and after spending my first 20 odd years on the water in various different sized and quality boats owned by firstly my Dad and other family members this thing was delux (obviously not flash by today's standards).

Most of all it how wet it is and the fact that a flushing toilet is all but demanded by the misses and daughter that is paramount to my decision but gee it's hard to let go - I trust this old tub so much andi know it inside out (got me home when it blew up to 40plus anda 3m swell from the bank to mindarie about 10 years ago and trust in a boat like that I am afraid won't ever be realized again).

Anywayverymuch a post about nothing other than maybe food for thought or comment...

heat shrinking assists

I had rigged a couple of single hook assists for my 500 gram jigs

after bringing it back up , i found the hook wrapped up around the swivel, so quickly stuck on a ready made one off a cheap sambo jig with the shrink.

When making them up,do you generally always heat shrink the longer assists to stiffen ??
