Fishing Reel Cleaning & Maintenance (PLEASE HELP)
Submitted by thebrett on Wed, 2012-04-04 22:37Hi Guys just wondering if anyone could help me out, I recently lent my reel to a mate and it came back full of sand and just not in good working condition anymore, I first rinsed it in warm water and dried, then took the reel apart and it was full of sand, I cleaned all the sand of it, re greased the internal parts, oiled the bearings, and then sprayed with pertek reel deal, but it still seems to not be spinning that smooth anymore and its making a noise when spinning when it never used to,
If anyone could help me out or give me any tips that would be great
(This is a pic of the reel)

Trolling around Cockburn sound?
Submitted by old salt on Wed, 2012-04-04 21:37Just out of interest what would one expect to catch this time of year trolling skirts and medium sized hard bodies around Cockburn Sound this time of year? Im hoping to finally get out boatbased for the first time this weekend if the weather is favourable. Can anyone recommed where to find a nice detailed map containing reefs wrecks and GPS marks of good ground?
Many thanks and a happy easter to you all.

Which braid
Submitted by Jutty on Wed, 2012-04-04 17:08Hi guys and girls
After a bit of advice after the best braid I can get my hands on in the 15-20lb range for my heartland 3000. It is paired to a blade n tails in heavy for the boat and a seajigger 315 for land based.
Have tried and liked td sensor, sensor surf, hyper tournament, tuf line and Veros on other combos and all have pros and cons would love to get some opinions or am I better with the devil I know rather than the devil I don't?
Cheers

Need help finding the mackies
Submitted by delcarlo on Wed, 2012-04-04 09:11Good morning Guys,
new to this forum, new to boat fishing
my name is Andrew and i'm a fishaholic
i've just got myself a Barcrusher 560c and am on the hunt for a spanish mack.. i'm hearing that it may be getting too cold for them, i'm willing to drive a couple of hundred ks if i have to, and put in the hours
ive got a couple of trolling outfits (shimano tyrnos 20 on shimano backbone, 50lb mono, 140lb wind on leader, clip on wire trace, and a shimano TLD 25 on a shimano backbone, 30lb braid, 140lb wind on leader and clip on wire trace), also have a couple of heavy spin outfits that can be used on metro macks
dont have a teaser or the likes
went for a troll last sunday, 2.5m swell calm breeze off the back of hillaries along the 20m contour at the back of the three mile.. 3 hours from first light till around 9am using halco laser 190s 2m divers (3 of) as Nathan at Cambells pro tackle recommended shallower divers as there is a alot of weed around at the moment, then did some bottom bouncing off the back of the reef as my deckies were getting bored (deckies going overboard next time as i want a mack)
thinking of heading up to jurien bay on easter monday, or going out to the west end of rotto.. cant really find any reports of macks around the last couple of weeks
would appreciate any help, spare hands, anyone with experience is welcome aboard my boat or i can be a deckie on someone elses boat, need to learn the ropes and hope the stars align
any other techniques that could be used to raise a mackie from the depths, lures/baits, drifting, berley..
i'm a man on a mission
thanks in advance!
Andrew

Bulk mulloway kill
Submitted by bitten on Wed, 2012-04-04 04:26Hey guys
Well there seems to be bulk mulloway being caught everywhere at the moment
The fishing is probably at its best that I have ever heard of at the moment
I wonder of its time to stop killing them yet
I can't talk I know cause I brought my one home too but I can't help feeling a little bit guilty
About it. I understand we all want to bring that absolute prize home especially after we put in all those hours chasing the big croakers
Just food for thought
Im not a greenly trying to save the world I was a pro fisherman only 5 years ago and wouldn't consider letting anything go but is it worth it just for a photo? I probably won't ever keep another fish of the size of the one I got on the weekend again
Happy fishing guys and congrats to all the guys who have got stuck into a big mulloway recently feels good when you finally get that big one doesn't it

Heading to Broome on Sunday for a week. Hoping to get out landbased. Anyone have any ideas where to head other than the jetty, after anything at all and won't have a 4x4.
Also if anyone is heading out next week and wants a deckie I should be available next week with a little notice. Happy to chip in for all the usuals.
PM me if your keen to head out.
Cheers

Using Radar to find Birds
Submitted by Alan James on Tue, 2012-04-03 19:08This is something I had never thought about but in light of the other post about radar I thought this maybe of interest to some. The follow comments were offered by a pro game boat skipper on another forum.
"It all comes down to what you can afford at the end of the day and you get what you pay for, the bigger the array the better the quality.
The boat I run has a Furuno FAR2127 Radar, 25w with a 8ft array, frinkin awesome consistently get birds at 8nm and have had birds working at 12nm, some days if I had to choose I would take the radar over the sounder, its saved my bacon a few times.
The big trick I have been taught is to have the gain up very very high almost so the screen is coloured in then the birds will show up much better, some times they are just a faint blur/variation to the colour but if its constant it is more than likely birds. Hope this helps. Play with the gain to you get it sorted, even if you find a work up start playing with the radar so you know what it looks like in the future. The smaller cheaper radars still work, it comes down to playing with the gain, sure they may not find birds at 8 miles but 3 or 4 is better than missing it altogether and makes your covered area bigger in the day.
The radar is an important tool, the eye can only really see birds working at two miles so many a man would have been close and missed a work up / hook up only a couple of miles. If I would have to choose I would put more money into a radar than any of the other electronics on a fishing boat (Game fishing that is).
It’s a great feeling while steaming out to the grounds and spotting birds at 8 miles then heading straight to the action and starting the day in the right place.
Another trick I use on the radar is keeping an eye on other boats, if you and acquire a target on your radar you can see where they are fishing and even see if they are backing up on a fish."

Van Staal vs Certate etc
Submitted by roganjosh on Tue, 2012-04-03 13:43Hi I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with the smaller Van Staal reels. I am in the market for a new light jig / bottom bashing / shore based soft plastic flicking up north for spangled etc. I know that is asking a lot in 1 reel. Most of the fishing will be at Busselton or up north at Coral Bay.
I am considering between few reels and have posted a similar topic before. I have not asked about the Van Staal ( VS150 ).
Any advice would help

Submitted by jdavies_99 on Mon, 2012-04-02 22:56
Hi guys,
Am doing a 5 day easter weekend at Abrolhos leaving friday morning early early.
We are a 45ft game boat if anyone is interested in running convoy behind us (or in front). The weather is looking pretty shoddy on friday so just thought I would pass the offer out if anyone wishes boat accross with us.
I have done the trip a few times in a small trailer boat and know how uncomfortabe it can get in the crossing.
