Reel screaming -- The best sound
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2011-08-22 21:13Well can I say one thing negative about my new Stella 8000 SW. It doesn't sound like its even working when its screaming on the drag. Mrs Saragosa 8000 makes a great noise. Not the Stella.
The best reel scream I have ever heard (keep it clean fella's) is the Alutecnos 1Speed Gorilla.
Made me think what is the best sounding reel under pressure?

Deck wash intakes
Submitted by randall df223 on Mon, 2011-08-22 20:00i am looking at installing a deck wash pump, probably a jabsco parmax 4 or similar. i don't want to drill any holes in the hull for intakes and un-necessarily introduce a risk of split hoses and sinking! therefore i am thinking i will mount an intake on the transom (i can do this without drilling into the hull). I am looking at a stainless steel live bait tank intake that consists of 1/2 inch tube that curves forward so that water is forced up with the movement of the boat through the water (hope that make sense!). my question is to those who have installed (or know about) deck wash systems is, will the water pressure introduced by this sort of intake adversely affect the operation of a self-priming pump?

Esperance gets marine safety boat
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-08-22 19:54A 7.5 metre former hydrographic survey vessel has undergone a full refit with latest navigation and radio equipment and been dispatched to Esperance to carry out DoT's marine safety compliance and education patrols along the Esperance coast.
"The vessel represents a significant boost to DoT's marine safety compliance resources in the Esperance region which is known for its demanding coastal environment. With an estimated top speed of up to 38 knots, it will also minimise response times to incidents and emergencies on the water.
The vessel, known as PV10, has been permanently relocated to Esperance and reflects DoT's commitment to providing a modern patrol fleet across WA.” said Garry Wilson, DoT Regional Transport Officer.
Mr Wilson said marine safety compliance patrols were important in highlighting the need for people to make safety the priority while on the water.
“Regional Transport Officers spend a great deal of time talking to boat owners educating them about safety on the water,” Mr Wilson said.
“The upgraded vessel will greatly assist in reinforcing the safe boating message and conducting safety checks of vessels on the water.”

iPhone GPS apps.
Submitted by Lastchance on Mon, 2011-08-22 16:21Hypothetically, if someone was on your boat with an iphone that has a GPS app installed (Navionics/Navman etc), is it possible that the phone has recorded the days' travel even if it isnt 'illuminated' ie, phone is locked and placed on the dash but still on?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Rock fishing safety review completed
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-08-22 11:05Environment Minister Bill Marmion has welcomed the findings of an internal review into guidelines surrounding coastal safety and rock fishing, initiated after a man drowned in April at Salmon Holes, near Albany.
The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) review focused on key areas across the State.
Mr Marmion said rock fishing occurred on much of the 3,600km of Western Australian coastline that DEC managed and it was important to ensure it was managed safely.
“Visitor safety is the department’s number one priority. DEC has existing visitor risk safety measures in place across hazardous coastal areas, including silent sentry devices and highly visible signs to warn people of dangers,” he said.
“This review has been conducted to examine visitor risk management relating to rock fishing management on DEC-managed lands, to investigate what other agencies across Australia are doing to manage this issue, and provide recommendations.”
“There were 14 recommendations in total and DEC will endorse all of these.”
Key recommendations from the review include:
- adopting guidelines outlined in the Australian Water Safety Strategy, which recommends the promotion of safe rock fishing and better education, as well as encouraging fishers to take responsibility for their own safety by wearing personal flotation devices
- supporting the formation of a multi-agency working group to ensure consistency in the approach to rock fishing across all agencies
- supporting initiatives by local communities and organisations to install silent sentries, angel rings, tie-on points and other safety devices in suitable locations and examine each initiative on a site-by-site basis
- preparing a comprehensive communications plan for delivering rock fishing safety messages to recreational fishers.
“DEC is working to implement recommendations from these reviews, including improved signage, increased staff presence during peak visitation times and more public education about visitor safety,” the Minister said.
“The department is committed to improving visitor safety and is moving quickly to implement any measures that will minimise the risk of such tragedies re-occurring.”
The review is available on DEC’s website at http://www.dec.wa.gov.au
FWA 9 ft spin rod
Submitted by pembo6 on Mon, 2011-08-22 09:48Hi. Does anyone have any experience with these rods? What sort of casting weight range do they have. I am looking at getting one to belt out metals and poppers but want to get an idea of how heavy (or light) I can go. Will also probably use it to whip out an unweighted mulie if the lures arent being taken.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Dampier species hotspot - NOT
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2011-08-22 08:18After work Friday with the wind (not tide) looking great headed out for a semi night fish.
Almost as soon as the lines went down, zzzzzz on the Mrs Saragosa 8000. Ha ha Ha was the thought - shark. But no, a nice size fish appear beside the boat, boga'd on on we went. Almost next drop zzzzzzzzz, again same story, bloody thing runs like a shark on the lightish drag.
In the meantime I am playing with Lacunas jigs and caught two nice triggers but nothing sweet.
zzzzzzzzzzzz goes the Mrs line. Same story with a fat 8kg on the boga fish onboard.
Now I want to play to, so down goes the snelled Mulie on a light drift type rig. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz my turn. Same story.
Now not to bore anyone but there is a problem here. Finally between the 2 off us -- Score 5 to Mrs, 2 to me. No other species of note caught. A few NW U/size snapps and a few sharks, including a turbo version off a 6ft sluggish lemon shark. These things fight like a boring dead wt and had no idea what was on.
Now the problem. Even thought we had a ball because these fish fight like hell, but we struck out. All of the Stinking Fat Sweetlips!!
Normally you find the odd one and you will then say -- good ground, but we found the bloody capital for these not even neighbours fish. All released in Sweet time.
Has any other northern fishos managed to Score a run off these pesky fish?

temp sensors for trailer tyres?
Submitted by till on Sun, 2011-08-21 09:23So this kind of thing sucks somewhat - at least we were changing it on the passenger side of the road on the freeway.
Does anyone use temp sensors for their trailer wheels, to prevent this sort of thing happening, or at least getting this far.

Advice on setting up Popper Rigs
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Sat, 2011-08-20 22:59I am sick and tired of snapping off expensive poppers (weighted). I use braid and tend to use a leeder which matched my braid. I use albright knots to attach the leeder. I am downsizing to lighter carbon rods with Fugi guides and the leeder knots are causing me pain.
Do any of you purists have some advice? Should I do away with the long leeder for popping? I am about to LOL

Great afternoon with the Family at Pinaroo thanks Sherb's for the invite
Submitted by GrahamM on Sat, 2011-08-20 20:18Got an invite to go for a fish at Pinaroo this afternoon and luckily i wasnt working so packed up some gear, food and the family.
We arrived shortly after 3 pm. It was great to see a few other fishwrecked members and some strays. The beach was pretty busy with fishos.
It was a lovely afternoon to be at the beach, it was a pity about the sea weed ( there was a fair bit in close ) so the kids whiting gear was not much use.
I decided to throw around some richter plugs and the green one came up trumps. had 3 hits in about the first 10 casts for 1 landed 36 cm tailor. I thought seeing as his whiting rod was no good with all the weed i had better let my middle one Heath, bring it in and man was he chuffed. Then changed colours but stuck with the richter plugs to no avail red/white 0 the pink 0 the all white 2 hits no hook ups.
There were also a few others that caught some smaller tailor mainly on baits and was good to see a few come up the beach.
Then it all went quiet so the Kids played and eventually we had dinner and no more were caught. we left after sunset.
All in all couldnt have thought of a better way to spend the afternoon.

Mulloway - full moon....no moon
Submitted by Braxi on Fri, 2011-08-19 23:07HI,
Just wondering on what you all think. I have had success on both the full moon and no moon but the full seems to be more productive. And they seem to like the bigger tides. Had very little action during the middle of the tides but bout an hour before and after high and low tides in not too long after dark seemed pretty good.

Two old farts going at it
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Fri, 2011-08-19 17:35
Steve decided to hijack me today for a couple of hours. The goal was to catch as much bait as possible for tomorrow's comp for the TackleShack. Steve is organising it so he is keen to win! Pic above is Sherbert with his gigantic double header.

The next pic is me showing off my little setup. Nothing fancy but we old farts just love to do it.
Look out Sherbs. I may even make it to the comp tomorrow and I have the secret recipe.

Dunsborough fishing report - Any one?
Submitted by jeremy-j on Fri, 2011-08-19 09:52Hey guys,
On a last minute decision Im heading for a quick getaway to Dunsborough this weekend and was wondering if anyone has heard any reports or have any tips on where to go.
I have packed a heavy outfit on the chance i may hit busselton jetty tomorrow night in the NW, focusing on the merky/clear water change. i have also packed the egi gear, a light 4lb combo and a light/medium 14lb combo.
Was thinking of heading to bunker bay area tomorrow morning and just throwing artificials around the rock holes and sand patches for some fun but want to know if any particular spots are holding fish as i have never fished dunsborough(usually surf).
Any input will be great.
Cheers.
