Calstar 700mh?

Anyone with any experience on the Calstar 700mh?

I'm planing on building a heavy spin rod for use with 40 - 50 ib braid and am a bit worried the 700h will be a bit of an overkill, not planing on chucking super sized poppers all the time. I can't seem to find much talk of the mh around the web though.

Maybe another question would be what size lures would people feel comfortable going down to with the 700h?

Any thoughts apprieciated.

Cheers, Nick.

Finn Spindrift Dinghy Vs Polycraft Tuff Tender

High guys,

I'm looking for a smallish poly dinghy to fish around my area for bream by myself. I've closed it down to the Polycraft Tuff Tender 3m or Spindrift Dinghy 2.5 or 3m in length. I've seen a video of the spindrift in the surf and it was looking pretty good. Have any of you guys had experience in either?

Looking to spend around 2.2k for hull and motor max

Cheers Ben

Woodman Point fish health warning

Health warning for recreational anglers: Woodman Point

At about 12.30am on Monday, 5 September 2011, the Water Corporation used its contingency outlet pipe from the Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant to release treated wastewater 1.6 kilometres offshore.

This is an unusual event, and as a precautionary measure, the Department of Health is advising recreational anglers to avoid eating raw fish caught in this area until further notice.

Environmental Health Acting Director Richard Theobald said the risk to human health was considered to be low and the advice to avoid eating uncooked fish was precautionary.

"While it is unlikely that anyone who eats raw fish caught in this area would become unwell, it is not advisable," Mr Theobald said.

"Anyone who has consumed fish caught in the area and becomes ill is advised to see their doctor," he said.

The release of two million litres of treated wastewater offshore at Woodman Point instead of at the Plant's Point Peron outlet was necessary due to a fault with a valve at the Plant which the Water Corporation is working to repair.

"It is anticipated that the treated wastewater will disperse naturally over coming days," Mr Theobald said.

The Department of Health will continue to monitor the situation and will provide further updates when required.

Fishing tackle and Accessories that you swear by

This is not a thread intended to advertise but to offer help to other fisherman with proven results with tackle that we use and swear by.

I will start it off with the best fishing knife on this planet in my opinion. I was sick and tired of buying fishing kinfe after fishing knife only to have them go blunt, tips snap, blades rust.

I forked out a few $$$ and bought a Buck 119. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I tell ya what. This has to be the best knife for fishing/hunting. Blade stays sharp for so  long and the knife feels so comfortable in the hand not to mention very intimidating to any potential thieves or trouble makers.

Feel free to ad any fishing tackle and equipment that you love and swear by...

Replace or Fix a rod

I was actually responding to another post when this came up. Have sort off decided what I will do but thought I would throw this to the equipment junkies.

"My nice  Diawa Flame's tip just suffered failure (twice actually 1st dont offer quality to mates catching squid - how can you high stick and break the tip on squid has me beat, but I was looking the other way when I heard the crack, 2nd not packing it away as normal ready to go to the repair shop, leaving it out, dogs knocked it over and the mover of the lawn ran over the tip and removed another cm or 2 - daft prick "cough cough" didnt see it because thats not where they normally go) and being partnered with a Stradic 4000CI4 I had to dig in the shed, and the only rod in there that would semi do the job until I either fix the flame or get a new rod for the CI4 was this old JW. Now due to a bloody sore back couldnt get out this weekend (first time in about 6 months apart from holidays) to test this.

I was looking forward to it in an odd way, now I am sure I will match the reel before next weekend. Might post the question about fixing or new rod and see. The loss of finesse doesnt phase me. Now if you answer I will promptly ignore your wrong answer" THIS WAS DIRECTED AT SAM C.

So I have a Okuma (yes yes I was wrong until I dug it out and checked) Flame FS 661ML 6'6 3-5kg that has lost about 2cm off the tip. Now for anyone that knows me would know that I hate Okuma  because of some disasters with Vsystem reels and warrantee issues. They looked good so I tried them and never again!!!!

Same with the Flame, but this rod just felt like it was what I wanted so hey Im not clever I got it. And surprise surprise I dont mind it (not enough to get it again with what its is matched with). Then upgraded the reel I had to the Stradic, and then thought why not the CI4, red and red look pretty cool. So that was my light weight flicky/tuna/squid/everything that is lightish up here in Karratha goto. The Bream rods/reels are stashed. I dont go out looking like a horney porcupine on the boat (still between the 2 off us it is 10 setups plus 2 SW fly rods tubed ready to go.

This is my goto for sight casting to Tuna especially, and light shallow sport with queenies etc. Does a good job as a squid outfit hence the undoing.

Sorry to be so bloody long winded (painkillers do that) but should I just replace the tip guide or considering what it is matched with get something new.

If its new what is the best rod for what I do to match the CI4 that I have only used myself twice but adore. As you can see above not a finesse junky, more like multi-tasking so I am not going to shed a tear over the loss off a couple of cm in fishing terms (keep it clean) but I am a fanatic about the gear doing what I am after. I also dont have the best gear (Im to rough) apart from a Stella 8000 (and you should see how I baby that), but I never get cheap stuff. More like 2nd or 3rd best. For example was going to get the Twinpower but a little big and have heard so many wraps about the Stradics, hence.

Waffle waffle waffle but thats it. Why would anyone want to take Morphine like medicine for fun has me beat. The stuff turns you into a loon.

Completed 2011 fishing objectives?

So what have you ticked off your list as to completed fishing objectives for this year so far and what's left?

Mine would have to have been finding big rubies out wide in multiple locations apart from that I guess it's been the same old same old.  My other objective is to get a big blue or striped marlin when the season starts in November.

Another Abrolhos moment of bliss...

I know that this topic is almost feeling like a broken record this week but YES, there was a 3 day window of mind blowing amazing weather and Black Sabbath and the Pearl (SimonC) took full opportunity of it! Special shout out and thanks to Poddy (if you get a chance to have a fish and beer with Poddy, do so, great guy!) for giving us a few pointers and heading us in the right direction and yes, Sorry that you couldnt make it Sam, but it was GREAT!

In a nut shell, day 1 saw us leave Perth before a sparrows fart so we were on the water by 10.30 in Gero. Thinking we'd be on fish in the next 90 odd minutes, we were wrong. Finding some great ground, I managed to haul the first fish on board within the hour... a trout! Things are gonna be good with that sort of start!

Day 1 even felt like we had trouble keeping away from the trout. A newly installed 1kw trannie just seemed to be bringing the fish to the boat. HEAVEN! Trout, Pinkies, Dhuis and not a shit fish in sight. That night after some steak and trout, we downed a few beers and slept happily in the boats awaiting what was to come.

Day 2 the two boats went our seperate ways with Simon C looking for the 50KG YFT and myself happy to find more ground but looking for ground wasn't so good. First lesson - get AWAY from the islands. Started nicely again with some really good pinkie ground but then the Charlie Court came to visit and visit they did.... OMG, how many of these little suckers are there! After getting away from them, the biggest baldie I have ever seem was on the line only to be dropped getting him into the boat. The closest to tears I've ever been over a fish. Deciding we needed to move out of the neighbourhood, we took off to see the boys and their tuna hunt. Apparently the sharks were enjoying their company too so not much fun for them. Out of a bit of boredom, we through a few deep divers in and within in minutes we were on. Double hook ups, then triple hook ups. Tuna and mackies EVERYWHERE! Out best YFT smashing my scales at 22kg before lifting it off the ground. Best bet being between 25-30kg. OMG. Not bad for a whole 15 minutes of work! The second boat still only 100meters away and followed by sharks and we were having the time of our lives... yeah baby!

Day 3- back to the new ground search but didnt' take long as we headed further out. Dhu's this time. Everywhere. On like Donkey kong for a solid 30 minutes. This is where we ran into a few of the other boys that posted. Everyone was on. Amazing stuff. Met Stevo and his Stabi craft. Nice piece of work that boat is. Once this shut down, it was off again but not for long. One thing that is very clear to me now is that this area is not very well mapped. Bommies jumping up 25 meters all over the place and packed with fish. HEAVEN!!!

In three days, I've had some of the best fishing I've ever had and I'm left questioning why I treck all the way to Exxy. 2 dozen trout, nearly as many dhu's, heaps of pinkies, tuna, mackies and all in unknown territory. If you get the chance, give it a go. Just an amazing spot  Photos in no particular order... just enjoy

Is the water calm enough?

bloody bolt cutters!

Darwin Fishing Help

I have arrived in darwin after 4 months boat fishing  the west coast. Unfortunately, i had to sell my beloved tinnie to travel to darwin. I know nothing about Darwin waters nor river fishing, barra, crocs!!!) If someone could give me some info on land based fishing in the area or even beter, I am on holidays here and have heaps of free time so if u need a deckie to come out- whether river or ocean, i would love to wet aline again.

I have searched heaps of sites and read that heading up buffalo creek and I can hook some muddies, just before I left I spoke to a local and they said crocs would get u- hence my trepidation!!

I had a 12 foot tinnie through exmouth to broome and took out some 25 back packers and travelers at my own expense just to see their face when they landed their fish of a lifetime (u know the look)(Mainly Spaniards- although they all wantes to catch sharks!!!) I'm hoping on a bit of kindness back and maybe someone that just loves to fish can help me in this unknown place. I return all fish bar enought to eat with out freezing so I don't need to go and rape your spots.

I would of course assist to cover costs of fuel, bait etc. if u need a deckie as I know it's not a cheap hobby!!!

 email- or call me 0418 947 656

tks for taking the time to read

Combo for perth Mackeral season

Hey Guys,

Have recently been elevated from deckie to skipper with the purchase of my first boat, looking to get into some mackeral this season in Perth and chasing some advice on best rod/reel combo's and lures.....any advice would be great!

Beach Report for Today

Yes, it's rained again and rained again.. OOO OOOOO

I am at Carramar and not that far from the beach areas I fish. Mid-arvo it went calm so I decided to go for a run with the mut and get a line in the water in rain. It's worked before.

Yes well; conditions on the beach were much different. It was blowing like crap from the WSW and weed banking up in the water so bad.

From what I saw the next few days will see the beached eroded with a pile of weed. Given this info I would suggest that the land based fishos have somewhere to go that is very much protected or relax and watch the Eagles this weekend with warm feet LOL.

The sand is soft as so please don't take any risks unless you have backup on hand.

New Boat

 Gday Guys,

New to the site, so firstly a hello to everyone.

Have been reading a few topics and you all seem very helpful.

A mate and myself have recently bought a 4.2 savage dinghy with a 25hp 2 stroke on the back.

Being only 21 and this being our first boat we are needing a bit of help.

We took it for our first spin on the swan today and it was reaching full speed without any dramas.

Fuel was getting low so we added some more fuel to the tank and within 5 minutes, the boat would not get back up to full speed. The throttle was on full but it was lagging and didnt have any power behind it, half throttle was fine. The motor is a 2010.

Any suggestions on what could have happened and any other tips to keeping the motor in good working order would be much appreciated.

Regards

James
