Call that a storm!!???

Went for a snapper bash off the stones last night, expecting strong NW'ers and big waves crashin the rocks...

Not happy... turned out to be light North-Easter'lies' all night, and light showers...?!?!

What happened to the severe weather that was forecast?

Anyways.... I managed to hook onto a small ray to warm me up... bloody had me going too... due to my water-logged sol-3000's drags slippin, making it feel like big headshakes.... Dam Rays!

Anyone else have a crack? any luck?

sarcasm0 and others thankyou

I have only been a member here for a short time and I have to say it has been very interesting reading. After reading some argy bargy posts you think to yourself is it worth sticking around.

Well I have to say yes! You only have to read my post http://fishwrecked.com/forum/fishing-alone-dinghy to see the effort that some of the guys on this site put into it. Particularly Sarcasm0 who practically wrote a book on the subject in replying to my question.

So to the regular posters I wanted to say thanks. You have been very helpful to me. To those that lurk (i was one) get in and ask questions. Most of the guys here are very helpful.

But a special thanks to Sarcasm0.It blows me away that you would make such an effort to answer my question in the detail you did.Laughing

Cheers

BJ

Rod/Reel Advice

Hi guys

Can anyone help get me onto a good smaller reel?

I have a 6000 (somewhere...the boyfriend has "misplaced" it) and can use his heavier gear.

Looking for a rod/reel to get into the lighter stuff and onto some salmon etc.

Thinking of a 2500 to 3000 reel and 2-6kg rod. Budget around 150-200?

Heard daiwa and shimano are best but happy with my flueger too (when I find it)

Any ideas appreciated.

Ps. needs to be manageable on dinghy but still ok to cast with.

Lancelin Report

Went up to Lancelin last thursday night hoping for some crays and a break in the wind to get into some fish.

Over 2 days the cray count was 0 and it was too windy to go out fishing.  I did manage an occy in the cray pots as a little bonus though.

Reports from some locals was that the Dhu's are in close as the pro's have their pots close in.  Sunday morning was stong easterly in the morning so decided to go out and bring the pots in.  After getting checked by fisheries they asked why I was not heading out fishing as the easterly was due to drop off and the wind was going to dissapear.  Hearing this, I took off home and got the gear ready to head out, I was back on the water by 11:00am.

I hit a sopt close in that was fishing well in the past for baldies but nothing was biting.  I then moved another 5 mile or so to a reliable dhu spot but again nothing was biting.  Except for the super calm conditons, it was not looking good.

I decided to head out deep to the 90's and noticed some surface action, possably tuna.  Having a go with the lure, nothing would bite so I thought I would drop down the patenoster to see if anything was happening on the bottom while I was trying for the tuna.

I was pretty much on straight away, queen snapper.  Next drop, another queenie but this time it was taken about 15 meters below the surface by a shark.  Next few drifts over the same spot produced about another 6 queenies.

I then managed to get a baldie, you can see it's stomach also has teeth marks where a shark tried to get my dinner.  After the Baldie, the pinkies turned up and I would have caught about 10 in 3 drifts, all except the one I kept went back fine.  They were still biting hard when I left.  on the last drop I caught the shark, I'm not sure on the type?

All in all it was a great few hours out on the water and I think I may have found a nice little lump in the 90's.

New member

G'day people. After being a long time follower of the site I finally got my act together and joined up. After tagging along to the SW comp the other day and meeting some good crew (well except for that Big Red joker!) made me realise I shoulda done it ages ago. Got some good pics the other day too so as soon as I work out how to re-size I'll put some up.

FW Exmouth Comp

Ok, for those of you who are coming up for the Exxy comp - Can you please let me know which bungalows you are staying in at the Lighthouse Caravan Park or where you are in town, so I can start organising where the opening night will be held.  (most convenient for everyone)

Cheers,

Adam

There will be more details on prizes and categories to come as the count down begins.

They call me Colin Ray

A few of us (Sherbs, Big Steve, Topper, Uncle Stu, Uncut Trigger and myself), decided to head up to Flat Rocks for an overnighter on Saturday. The idea was to see if we could catch a few mulloway or tailor as the conditions were forecast to be pretty good. I also wanted to test out my new Toyota Hilux Surf 4WD after finally finding a suitable vehicle to fit my budget last week.

The wind was howling from the south east when we arrived and set up camp, but as forecast it dropped right off to make for pretty nice conditions (apart from a bit of weed).

Unfortunately, the fishing didn't match the conditions and the only success was a banjo shark for Big Steve.

Things were a bit gloomy and a few of the guys were thinking of hitting the sack at around 10.30 when I suddenly had a big hook up. We were all hoping it was a decent mulloway when it surged awayt from the beach - but it soon became apparant that it was a ray (and a big one).

After about 40 minutes of toing and froing, and some help from some of the boys in wrestling it out the shore break, the pretty sizeable black ray (estimated by Sherbs at about 40 to 45 kgs) was de-hooked and released back into the sea.

The only other action came at about 11.30 pm when I hooked a size, but pretty skinny tailor. I then lost another tailor and that was about it for the night.

We woke the next morning to great conditions (thankfully most of the weed had moved on).

Unfortunately there were no tailor around, but the lads had a bit of fun pulling in a load and herring and whiting.

I perservered with the bigger gear and lost a few fresh whiting baits (kindly supplied by Sherbs) before I made another big hookup.

Once again we were hopeful it may have been a mulloway, but those hopes were soon dashed when there a big splash and an Eagle Ray took flight with my line attached. This thing made a few jumps (which was pretty spectacular to watch) before heading back down to the bottom and taking me on in a tug-of-war.

Eventually I brought it in to shore only to lose it when it cut me off on the shark rocky ledge I was fishing across.

I hate hooking rays, but I have to say the big one was a great test for my trusty old Moonraker and my Saltist 4500.

In the end we ended up with a heap of herring and whiting before making the trek back home, though I did have a hiccup when I went to take off and found that my battery had flattened. Thankfully a bit of bush mechanic work had my vehicle back on the track.

Sorry about the lack of photos, the only fishing shots we had were off the big ray taken on a mobile and they didn't come out too good.

Importance of trailor lights

Went to go for a fish yesterday morning.    All set up and excited for tha possibility of getting onto something a bit bigger than a herring.  On my way down to my local spot, some donkey with a tinnie on a trailor was doing his best sunday driver effort.   I finally decided to pass him and as I got about half way across his tinnie he starts turning right.   Totally oblivious to tha fact that I am now passing him he starts to put is foot down.   I had to floor it over tha curb across some dudes lawn and avoid a brick wall to get back on tha road.    I blew out one of my front tires and had to pull tha 4x4 over.   Once my mate and I settled down to tha fact that we were just about in a huge crash I got out and started goin through tha process of changin my tire.   I soon realized that my tire iron was missing and only tha jack was in tha truck.   Needless to say after a couple of minutes we realized that this was gonna require a bigger effort than a standard tire change.  It wasnt even 730am so my mates missus came and picked us up while we waited for repco to open.  Luckily he had cold beer in tha fridge!!  I bought a roo jack and we changed tha tire what a drama.    Meanwhile donkey with tha tinnie was probly sittn back catchn fish and enjoyn his day.   He never even stopped!!

Now that I have a roo jack what are peoples suggestions of storing it.    I have seen them on tha back door with tha spare and also on tha roof racks.    I heard that it can cause tha hinges to buckle if its on tha back door.

Hopefully I can get out again soon.   Always make sure if your towing a boat that your trailor lights are working and save other peoples lives!!!

SALMON!!!!!!!!

hi when do u think the salmon will start showing in the  metro marinas ??

and how big will they be wen thye get here???

Octo jigs

Finally got out to the first bank off Jurien yesterday...we got our quota of baldies and a few of them hit the octa. I did notice that all fish caught this way, including an u/s dhuie and one of those spiky venomous things, were hooked on the outside of the mouth. It appears the fish were hitting the actual head of the jig, and the hooks were swinging around and jagging it from the outside.

Anyone else notice this when using this type of lure?

Bremer Bay

Looking for advice on fishing Bremer Bay heading down on Sunday with a 7M boat.

Any advice on depths of water, direction, bait to use, ground, rigs etc

Any info would be great.

Thanks

Fishing at night

I have never fished at night before except in the sounds.  Friday night looks pretty promising but was wondering if sharks will be a problem fishing the 5FB behind GI. What can we expect to catch?  Is bait the best option or can you jig or use soft plastics?  Will anything I catch count against our bag limit on Saturday?   Any insight would be appreciated?
