27 mhz or vhf
Submitted by grayzeee on Tue, 2010-04-20 16:36my current 27 mhz radio seems to be picking up other peoples transmissions but i'm not able to transmit
everything seems to be working fine . just nobody can hear me. radio not that old and new arial has been fitted.
any ideas to what the prob may be?? lead seems ok.
also looking in case it needs replacing , the vhf has transmit power of 25 watts while 27 mhz is only 4. surely this makes a difference in range although i've been told they have same range
is the vhf worth the arse ache of doing the licence??

Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2010-04-20 16:19My Navman GPS stuffed (antenna and $500 for a new one) and also the sounder is dodgy. Has anyone got an opinion about these 2 units. $500 between the units.
Fishing ATM on triangulation and spots I know. Obviously not the coolest.
Cheers

Otherwise Furono which I can get.

Mills Charters release technique
Submitted by mrsquidworth on Tue, 2010-04-20 14:43If anybody is considering a trip on a charter boat and is a responsible fisherperson i would strongly recommend not using Mills Charters out of hillarys. on a day out this weekend i saw half a dozen under size pink snapper and one undersize dhuie float away to be pecked at by the birds as the decky was too lazy to use the release weight that was rigged up and ready to go sitting in the corner. Instead he used his own very special technique that consisted of facing his back to the water and lobbing the fish as far as he could over his shoulder and walking away without giving a f#@k what happened to the fish.

Step 2
Submitted by Trousersnake on Tue, 2010-04-20 10:16After a few efforts with no success, I finally managed to get all aspects of tha big beach rod working. With fresh herring caught on Sunday and a decent ganged rig set up me and my mate were at our local. So far so good we made it without any close calls of writing tha 4x4 off. My first cast I was very happy with and set tha rod in my piece of PVC. I set up my little rod to try for some more herring. After 10 minutes or so I decided to see if anything was happening. Some thing had taken my herring and 2 of tha ganghooks straight off. I was stoked even tho I had nothing. A new set of gangs and another side of herring and I was back in. Within minutes I was getting big pulls on tha drag but nothing set. Then all went quiet. I reeled in to find a hering carcass back bone and tail on tha hooks. Wow what a rush. Unfortunately tha swell started getting crazy and tha seaweed was starting to cause havoc with tha lines, sinker and bait. So we called it a day. Just stoked to have made it to step 2!!!!!
What was tha forcast swell for today for northern metro. I think that I have a lot of learning to do when it comes to picking good days to get out. That being said this morning was fuckin awesome!!!!

feed of river prawns
Submitted by fisho-ron on Mon, 2010-04-19 21:08

after my pathectic attempt at fishing with my mate earlier in the day, me and my young bloke went out on saturday night to catch a feed of prawns. (yeah ha, i can catch something)
the pic is what was left sunday morn after we cooked up on the boat that night and had the freshest prawns you can get, they go down very well with a few bourbons and some good company.
we ate about 2 kilo between us and another boat and this is what was left to take home, nearly all the prawns are about the size in the coke can pic.
its good to see they are starting to show and should only get better.
yum yum yum!!!

skipper 0...deckie 1
Submitted by fisho-ron on Mon, 2010-04-19 20:47Don’t you hate it when you take a mate out for the first time and he out fishes you?
This happened to me on Saturday
I took my mate brocky(pic with him holding his f...ing fish) out for the first time.
We left freo at 5.30am heading for the closest fad, until i found out it had been removed for matinence, so
We tried a few other spots with the mate getting everything bar the kitchen sink and myself not even getting any bites.
I could not even get a salmon! (never seen so many boats in one spot)even with the new rod i had bought for this occasion.
The mate got the catch of the day with the dhuy just size at 52cm and a nice size blackass, as for the skipper i come home with my hole and everything in it!!!! Nil,natta,f/all
I was happy to head in at 3pm to swap my mate for my son and head out to do some prawning, i knew i would catch something there.
I might bring out a new rule for my boat...you are not allowed to out fish the skipper or you forfeit your catch,,ha.ha.ha.
1 good thing come out of the day for me and that is the new sounder works a treat, with a huge jump in detail.
I will take some pics of the 2 sounders reading the same ground next time i head out
cheers

toyota landcruiser vs Jeep Wrangler
Submitted by codysam9 on Mon, 2010-04-19 17:10i know this doesn't really have much to do about fishing but...
this guy at tafe, he always tries telling me that a jeep wrangler is better than a landcruiser i basically laugh in his face, his defence is " the jeep is lighter than a land cruiser so that makes it better off road, and i try telling him that a cruiser is top of the range 4x4, on road and off road...
anyway getting to the point i would like a opinion on what 4x4 is better off road...
p.s: this guy at tafe is a real cock sucker
thanks...

sounder scrolling speed
Submitted by just dhu it on Mon, 2010-04-19 11:57I presently use a Lowrance LCX 37 broadband sounder and when out in 30 to 50 mt depth of water i find the scrolling speed very slow, i have had the unit replaced twice so its not the sounder or the transducer unit and each time i have raised this issue with the supplier and been informed that it is working correctly. My issue is when travelling along say at 12 to 15 knots the speed of the ground formation displayed on the screen is extremely small ( length) .. or so i think .. i have set the scroll speed to maximum and the ping speed to maximum, this then activates hyper scroll speed.
when i travel along and i assess how far i have travelled across the water surface compared to how much information is displayed on the screen i must have missed alot of ground and iam not acurately seeing the bottom , ie i could travel a 100 mts across the surface but the sounder will only have about 30mm of recording going across the screen. iam aware that the scroll speed is slower the deeper you sound, but i would like know if this is standard for a Lowrance units or what other sounders scroll speed display .

Going north and need new rod... help!
Submitted by lunker on Mon, 2010-04-19 09:54Hi guys,
I'm flying to Karratha with the missus in July and driving to Exmouth/Coral Bay for some r&r and plenty of fishing of course. Haven't been up that way before, and will only be fishing off the shore so was planning on taking the 7' td sol with about 6kg on it.
Problem is, I've been advised by several people that Qantas are strict about luggage and the rod+tube will be over the 2.1m which they allow. Has anybody had experience with this?
So since the rod is a one piece, I may have to buy something else for the trip instead (2 piece) and bring a shorter tube. Does anybody have any recommendations? I love the Sol but if i cant take it.... I'm not overly rich so probably a limit of a coupla hundred tops. Would a 7 footer with about 6kg cover most areas? Will be chuckin metals mainly unless I get any other tips. The reel's an exceler 3500
Cheers for ya suggestions guys
Chris

Fish ID help - no pic sorry
Submitted by wacraig on Mon, 2010-04-19 07:45Morning Everyone,
Got up for an early morning walk on Saturday waiting for the wife and in-laws to get down to the boat. Walking along beside the rocks at Mandurah Marina there were a number of leather jackets (nice sizes too) tooling idly past. Stopping to watch for a bit I noticed a flash of colour in closer, within the rocks.
Positioning myself a little better there were two fish in between the rocks.
For want of a better description they both had a shape like a mangrove jack / emporers, were blueish in colour, with black vertical stripes. Taking into account the magnification of the water they would have been around 20 cm long, if not a shade longer.
Yes, I had partaken of a couple of beers the night before..... but am pretty certain I wasn't seeing things.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Catching Mullet
Submitted by John the Pom on Sun, 2010-04-18 21:43Went up to Quinn's Rocks on Saturday for a couple of hours with the young'un for the second time.
The first time we went we managed the usual herring and skippy, but on Saturday we landed a couple of decent tarwhine, some nice fat gardies and a couple of herring then it went dead.
The young'un breaks out the berley blob and proceeds to catch a couple of monster mullet that came off at his feet.
We ended up with two, one quite a decent size as well all caught on prawn.
Anyone else caught one on prawn, I didn't think they took prawns?
A good day overall with tarwhine and mullet being new species to tick off, sorry no photos as we forgot the camera.

Sounder help
Submitted by fords_rule85 on Sun, 2010-04-18 17:16Hey guys, just picked up my new boat last weekend so was keen as mustard to get it out this weekend. I went out both saturday and sunday but had little to no luck either day. I went out to the mewstones for some tailor then headed out toward rotto from there and then back to the west end of garden island. I spent most of the day looking at the sounder, I have sussed out what ground looks like what but my problem is im not sure what i am meant to be looking for ground wise e.g lumps, holes, flat ground ect. Any help would be much appreciated.Thanx

G Loomis decision
Submitted by dd83wa on Sun, 2010-04-18 16:46Hi guys,
Just after someones experiences and/or thoughts on G Loomis DSR series rods.
I am looking at either a DSR820-S GL2 but am wondering if the extra $150 is worth spending on the GLX? I've read the GLX is made from a higher modulus carbon (bit more return) but i'm not sure i'd notice the difference in the real world, having just got into light spin stuff.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
