Documentary about Blowfish
Submitted by Robb on Wed, 2010-05-05 00:28Hi all,
Never posted on here before but here goes. My name is Rob and I'm studying film at uni and we're making a documentary about blowfish in the Swan River with the angle of how annoying they are and what a pest they are to our favourite fishing spots. I am looking for anybody, male or female, preferrably a little older and with lots of character who is willing to give up there time for a couple of hours so we can interview them about their experiences with catching blowfish. Just answering simple questions like do you think the blowfish in the Swan River are out of control? What do you think should be done? What do you do when you catch a blowfish? pretty simple stuff. Also if you are older or know someone who older who fished the Swan River 'back in the day', and could tell a few stories about what it used to be like fishing the river before the blowies took over that would be golden. Let me know if you are interested in sharing some stories on camera and helping out a fellow fisherman. Cheers!
Rob
P.S. Filming would be low key, only a crew of 4 people, probably down the river somewhere with a nice background. Nothing too intimidating.

Release of dead fish
Submitted by AmericanBen on Tue, 2010-05-04 21:31Of all of the issues discussed recently I was suprised that no one has addressed the need for some common sense concerning release of fish that clearly not going to make it.
The last few trips out every blackarse I pulled up from 110 metres was done for even one that was doubled up with a pinkie that had no effects of trauma. Luckily I caught them before we reached our bag limit.
I have given this some thought and for me it makes sense to have an option of bringing in fish that are severely injured or dead and contacting fisheries to pick them up and give to a charity.
My last question is; is this a common problem with blackarse in deep water??.....by the way they weren't babies and were well over the limit.
I have always used my release weight since moving here from the states 2.5 years ago. Good on the bloke who came up with the idea!

Tips on prawning in the river
Submitted by ledge64 on Tue, 2010-05-04 20:59
Would like to try prawning in the river am I right to assume that the right time to go is when the tide is high and just turned as soon as it gets dark?
On the attched tide pic is 7.04pm a good time to prawn? is the tide running fast enough or wait until there is a bigger high tide?
any tips appreiceated

what is it worth $
Submitted by fisho-ron on Tue, 2010-05-04 20:12i know there is a lot of ifs and buts about this question, just after a genaral guide.
a mate is looking at a 1999 northshore 6.5 mtr with a 1999 200 2 stroke yammy.
the whole thing is in poor to very average cond including boat, motor and trailer.(380 hrs)
they are still licenced but do req work.
rough run down...paint is badly faded, gelcoat is a bit rough to feel , few cracks in gelcoat, motor badly faded but dose seem to run ok, clears and canopy need to be replaced, interior is worn but not ripped, trailer is ok apart from the brakes.
the boat has not been in the water for a couple of years at least.
a couple of better points, it dose have a new s/steel tank, flush mount gps/sounder, cd, 27meg radio, digatal epirb, good jackets, deck wash, live wells in the rear, kill tanks in the floor, drive on trailer, etc etc
preety much all the standard equipment that they come with (if you know the boat)
just after a rough idea what it is worth,
as is or in top cond?
i have my own thoughts but i dont want to influence any one
cheers

exmouth/karratha options
Submitted by oldsalty on Tue, 2010-05-04 06:20Hi everyone,
I was hoping to get a bit of info for our upcoming trip to Exmouth and Karratha this June. We should have a couple of weeks in both areas but im unsure where to situate ourselves when we're there as we have never been there. We will be fishing out of a 5 metre console.
In Exmouth, for fishing destinations and launching is it inconvenient to stay in the national park? are u better off staying closer to town? We would prefer to camp if we could.
And same goes for Karratha/dampier, i hear the caravan parks get pricy up there, where would be some convenient locations in these areas to be central to a variety of fishing and launching options without doing to many km's?
I know sometimes u cant have everything in the one place but some info prior to getting there would be great! If anyone has been in these areas and i know these spots have been talked about lots on this site, but for a new comer it would be much appreciated,
cheers

Newbie from Geraldton
Submitted by Gadsy on Mon, 2010-05-03 19:58Hi all. I'm another newbie here, although I'm a long time lurker on the forum. I'm right into kayak fishing - when the weather here in Gero permits and will be trying to hunt down Poddyfish so I can find out where the Dhui's are.
My goal at the moment is to catch a Dhui from my kayak and hopefully I can bag one soon!
Cheers all

Radio channels for exmouth
Submitted by mako magic on Mon, 2010-05-03 19:00Was thinking that since its getting close to exmouth we should sort out channels on both vhf and 27mg so we can all have a chat and be in safe contact with everyone.
Not 100% sure of what is the normal chit chat channel on vhf.
Any idea's? that way we can all switch them on the same.

When we got out the sea breaze was already in and it was quite sloppy.
Didn't think the conditions would suit trolling but I was wrong.
Mates Chris and Ian managed there first billfish in a hot 2 hour sesion.
Great way to end a awsome trip.

Smart Move Not Following Me Out From Two Rocks!
Submitted by wazzbat on Sun, 2010-05-02 20:14Just a follow up to my topic last week. No one followed us out on Saturday because no one else went out on Saturday. And with good reason... The weather was poo with a bit of crap thrown in on top. And to make things worse, there were no Kwells in the glove box when we got to the ramp!!! Aaaaargh! I hadn't been out fishing without popping a couple of Kwells in over 10 years (the last time I got sea sick).
So out we head as the sun poked it's head over the hills. It wasn't too bad at that stage with light SE winds creating a few lumps to negotiate. By the time we got out there, I was already feeling a bit crook. Oh oh. I kept my mouth shut and fished on as I didn't want to upset the old man and kill all the hope and excitement of catching a big one.
After a while, with only a few shit fish and a Seargent Baker for bait brought on board, I was getting worse and couldn't hold on any more. Projecting an interesting fluid out of my mouth and over the side of the boat. I thought Cornflakes and Milk were going to find there way back up but the only thing that made it out was (i think) water???
Anyway, I pushed on, feeling a bit better after that and we decided to head a bit further out to a spot which had produced well in the past. By the time we got out there just after 9am, the winds had picked right up and after giving it a go for 10 mins, hoping it would die off a bit, we decided to pull the pin. I was getting more sick again and the seas were quite big.
It was a slow and dissapointing ride back in and after pulling the boat back on the trailer and looking out at the ocean, you would swear that it was good fishing weather. It shows how deceiving the ocean can be and how quickly it can change out there.
So no photos - which under the circumstances is probably a good thing. It just wasn't meant to be. Maybe next time. Hope others had more luck!
