Search button not working, need some Bali advice!
Submitted by flyingdutchfisherman on Fri, 2012-04-13 12:15Anybody been to Bali and did some land based fishing?
I'm flying in 2 weeks to Bali and ofcourse I take my spinrod and overheadrod with me!
I was thinking about hiring kayaks and go for a peddle with my spin rod and trow some poppers, do some jigging, lure fishing and maybe some live baiting.
I also take my game rod with me to do some shark fishing off the beach.
I was thinking to go to the Gili Islands and Lombok. Any other place where I should go?
Who's been fishing before in Bali and can tell me something about your fishing? Where you been and what tackle you used and ofcourse what did you catch!? any stories and tips are welcome!
cheers!

Surprise catch
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2012-04-12 12:29Just for interest wanted to ask this questions?
Went out last saturday from Dampier and despite the forecast was rather blowy, so couldnt head out wide. Started with a lazy lazy time with the afternoon wind predicted (wrong) to calm down heaps, so we intended to fish into the night starting at 2pm.
Went to a regular snapper spot that always has the goods on these fish and the odd CTrout etc. Was delighted to bring a good Bluebone in, but was very surprised with the next drop.
At first with the hit and fight I called it for a bloody Dusky Morwong (which often turn up here), but soon the colour red appeared, and onboard came a very nice 8kg Red Emporor. I was very stocked at the unusual catch for this spot.
I didnt look at the screen on the sounder (I was still getting over it) but the Mrs the good deckie she is checked the screen and the depth was 8.6m.
I was surprised at the red, but more so with that depth.
Question then: How shallow has anyone caught a red in? I believe it was a huge fluke.

Braid to leader for big poppers & stickbaits?
Submitted by BigSpinna on Wed, 2012-04-11 21:59Hey fellas,
Chasing some advice for connecting my 60lb braid leader to 120lb fluorocarbon leader. Gonna be tossing 200mm down to 140mm poppers and stickbaits. Was thinking about a PR knot to heavy swivel and split ring so I can change lures easy. Was watching nomad videos and they use twisted leaders, is this overkill for exmouth or a plausible option? Thinking il stick to solid connection with PR knot.
Any guys who have done some popping up north please enlighten me!
Cheers
Chris

Albany Salmon Report
Submitted by Goodz on Wed, 2012-04-11 21:18Just a quick report on the week I recently spent with the family down in Albany and Peaceful Bay.
Arrived in Peaceful Bay to find it not so peaceful with a 5m+ swell and 20-30 knot winds for most of our 3 night stay. Pretty much all the beaches in the area were totally washed out from the swell altho we did managed to get around the main bay after the swell had eased on the last day to have a look around the inlet mouth, which is currently open. The only beach that was fishable was the back beach behind the small peaceful bay (I forget the name of it?) and we did find some massive herring and a couple good KG's one afternoon. The salmon seemed to be eluding us until I had a funny hook up on my small squid baited hook meant for a KG. This fish ran straight along the beach before making it self known in true salmon fashion with a big headshaking jump. After a short fight I landed my first salmon of the year, once again on a random small hook!

That was the only one landed or seen while we were at Peaceful Bay so I felt lucky to be the one that scored!
A few days later I caught up with Chrisp for a salmon hunt down in Albany. After convincing him of an early sunrise start we hit up Nanarup beach with high hopes. The beach had plenty of reallly good looking channels and gutters that we threw stickbaits into as we made our way along. The herring were plentiful and a good size but the salmon didn't show. Chris did land a solid skippy on the stickbait though which had him guessing for a second.
We ended up driving over to Two Peoples bay for a look and armed with a rod each and a few stickbaits we hit the rocks. After chatting to a young bloke who had been casting lures for a few hours for nothing I made the comment "Don't worry, a school of salmon could come along at any moment"... a couple casts later and we both hooked up bigtime. Reels where screaming and the hoots and hollars were loud! Unfortunately we both got smoked and busted off on the rugged rocks submerged right infront of our chosen fishing platform. A quick tie of new leaders and stickbaits I was straight back on. This time I kept my rod high and somehow avoided the rocks and after many big jumps and screaming runs I landed the first salmon of the day.

This fish absolutaly destroyed the trebels on Chris's stickbait that I borrowed too.

After taking forever with his bobbin leader knot (were you tying a PR?) he also was back into them.

A bit of tricky rock hoping was needed to get these fish landed on the rocks too.

Chris finally landed one!

The salmon were going absoluately mental, leaping from the water on the strikes only meters infront of us. We lost probably 15+ fish with 5 lures in total going with them. Over the 2 hours or so we landed 5, with the only option of getting them in to lock the drag up and go hard! At one point I felt like I was on an old tuna boat doing some poling as I literally had 2m of line from the tip of my rod and I just dropped it in the water as the school of salmon swam by right infront of me and instantly hooked up... although I tried to heave it straight over my head, I failed. haha..
The winning lure for the day was the old Waxwing!

The fish eventually moved on and we called it a day... the images of salmon smashing our lures right infront of us stayed in the front of our minds for days! Chris the lucky bastard is still down there and has had some more action since!
Certainly a session to remember that one...
Another great trip down South with the family and a few sneaky fishing trips in there too.

My new pup Sasha claims a salmon head.

Crease for reels
Submitted by rails8291 on Wed, 2012-04-11 15:47Hey guys, how are we all,
Just wondering what sort or brand of crease people are using on there reels, do you have to use the proper reel crease that you buy from tackle stores or is there something you can get elsewhere cheaper and a larger volume, like repco etc. Opinions would be helpful.
Thanks Rick

Trying to expand my fishing offshore fishing areas..
Submitted by terboz123 on Wed, 2012-04-11 11:55Hey all
with one month to go, im putting in serious effort to land my first decent dhue on the tub...Alot of my fishing has been arond rotto, and its up and down, with mainly boldies and black bums.
Im intrigued by fishing off hillaries/ocean reef, and curious to know is there good round offshore there? or should i do the drive north to mindarie/two rocks.
Launchin from mindarie do you still generally head north west?
Intrigued in starting to fish north more, but with all the two rocks marina threads here unsure what to do. I dont mind getting up and leaving before dark, but two rocks would be an hrs drive for me to the marina anyway.
Is direction bank reachable from oceanreef?
any info would be good, and no im not asking for your co ords,im asking for general info on the area. Currently going through the search functition as well.
thanks all
