Premade twin jig assists- suggested brands/ types?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Wed, 2015-08-05 17:04Hey all
Just after some suggestions on some reasonably prices and reasonable quality pre made twin assists.
Would ideally be after some with not too thick cord and some tinsel/ flasher around the hooks. Not a big fan of the thicker single hooks premades that are around (usually used for high speed stuff id assume
Would be running them on 100-200gm slow action demersal jigs on both pe3 and pe5 set ups so am guessing something around the 4/0-5/0 size and approx. 80lb cord would cover both?
Have tried a few different make-my-own versions but have had various issues with them so looking for the lazy option but don't really want to pay stupid money for them, as they don't usually last too long up here anyway!
thanks in advance for any recommendations.

rec fishers boat hits whale off broome coast
Submitted by hezzy on Tue, 2015-08-04 11:56would have scared the hell out of them
given the number of whales in recent years its bound to happen more often

Anglers injured after fishing boat smashes into whale off Broome coast
Photo: Sara Hennessy required stitches for a gash to her head after her team's boat hit the whale. (Supplied: Sara Hennessy)
Map: Broome 6725
A group of fisherwomen has described the moment their boat slammed into a humpback whale off WA's north coast, in an accident that left several of them with cuts and bruises.
Sara Hennessy and three friends were competing in the Broome Billfish Classic last week when the accident happened.
As they sped back shore at the end of the day, they struck a whale as it surfaced suddenly.
"We were driving home when all of a sudden there was an absolutely massive bang, and all I can remember is being catapulted into the air and feeling like a rag-doll being thrown against the side of the boat," Ms Hennessy said.
"I didn't know what was going on, because I'd bashed my head quite badly and there was blood going everywhere."
In her disorientated state, Ms Hennessy was able to radio for help before locating two friends who had been sitting up on the roof of the boat's cabin.
"We were stationary, I could hear the motor running, and I just had these terrible thoughts that I'd run them over and smashed them up with my propeller," she said.
I just feel so thankful that we were all safe.
Sara Hennessy
"But as it turns out the girls were fine, they were floating in the ocean. They're slightly stiff and sore now, but otherwise fine."
It emerged later the women sitting on the boat's roof had spotted the whale surfacing seconds earlier, but it was too late to raise the alarm and stop the boat.
None of the group were badly hurt, although Ms Hennessy required stitches for her head wound.
It is not known what happened to the whale.
"I just feel so thankful that we were all safe," Ms Hennessy said.
"I don't think anybody in a boat goes out to collide with a whale or hurt a whale, I mean we all love them and they're amazing animals.
"But I suppose it's just something to keep in mind that there's so many of them now compared with 10 or 15 years ago, so this is going to happen more often."
Whale numbers on the increase
Humpback whale numbers are believed to have increased by as much as 10 per cent a year since protections were put in place in the 1960s.
That is believed to have contributed to an increasing number of strikes and near misses among boaters in communities like Broome.
Department of Parks and Wildlife officer Peter Carstairs said people needed to take care when on the water during the peak migration months of June to October.
"We obviously don't want to have animals harmed, but it's for people's safety as well," he said.
"If you hit an animal going at speed, you're going to injure yourself and damage your boat. So we really want people to be extra cautious at this time of year, because we have a number of animals migrating up the coast and collisions can happen easily."
The department has run an education campaign in Broome in recent years, distributing whale safety stickers and stubby-holders to regulars at the local boat ramps.
"The main message we're trying to put out there is to drive to the conditions, because there are very large animals and they stop your boat in its tracks if you hit it while it's surfaced," Mr Carstairs said.
"We're asking people to stay 100 metres away from the whales, and to not approach them from the front or the back.
"In this case it was an accident, and these things aren't easy to avoid, but just driving to the conditions is the main message we want to put out there."

Yamaha parts from America
Submitted by Piggy on Tue, 2015-08-04 00:40I feel bad because I know I should be supporting local buisness but the prices here in Australia and in particular Perth is rediculous!! I recently purchased parts from America to service my engine and for around same price I was going to be charged for an oil filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and a water pump kit ($330 was the cheapest) here in Perth I ended up getting 3 x oil filters, 3 x fuel filters, NGK spark plugs, water pump kit, external annodes and 2 thermostats for $398 delivered to my front door..... All of these are genuine Yamaha parts from a Yamaha dealer in the U.S by the way....... Its a damn shame I cant find some where that can send me Yamalube from over there becuase it is about a quarter of the price!!...... Its just rediculous how our government charges so much in tax which in turn hurts local buisness because the consumer purchases from where it is cheaper!
Now all i have to do is find an American dealer who can sell me cheap trailer parts to service the trailer hahaha
Has anyone else done the same as Im doing? Do you feel bad for not supporting local?
Cheers fishos!!

Casting distance - same length different cw
Submitted by Ahkarboy on Tue, 2015-08-04 00:16Hi
New to the forum but I thought I'd ask a question despite trying to do a search.
Was thinking of getting a new rod but a question popped into my mind about casting distance. Wondering if casting an 85g lure on a 9ft 6 daiwa, sensor surf (cw 20g - 90g) would be equivalent to casting the 85g lure on a 9ft 6 daiwa demon blood (cw 60g - 120g)
Is there a maximum plateau in casting distance in the same rod despite having the allowance of a heavier casting distance?
Cheers

The missus' trip
Submitted by ChrisG on Mon, 2015-08-03 19:42okay, the missus wants to go away for a week fishing to see 'if' she likes it!!!!! I go north every year and have done for a long time and I'm familiar with a big portion of the coast from steep to Exmouth.... The issue I have is I normally do my trips March thru May....and the week that the missus and I can both get off work is in late October so I'm thinking anywhere NW is off the cards especially given I want to take the boat....any suggestions? Augusta / Alabany would be new from a boating point of view but wondering if anyone has any advice. Won't be big days as she struggles to get up too early :) plus my boat isn't massive - 6m glass.

Ocean Reef Upgrade
Submitted by DTrain on Mon, 2015-08-03 16:50My friend took this photo of the upgraded ramps at ocean reef. They've finished the first half and are now working on the second half.
I used the ramp on Sunday. I found that the concrete section was too high to climb up when your standing near the water line, so you need a mooring line long enough so you can walk up to where the concrete is lower.
There was also a couple of groups of people fishing off the ramp. There's now space for people to set up camp with deck chairs etc. So there's probably going to be more land based people using the pontoons.
They've also bumped the price up to $9 for parking.

Swan Reach fishing questions
Submitted by 420casts on Mon, 2015-08-03 13:41Upon staying in Adelaide for the next few weeks, I'll be making a trip to Swan Reach for a few days. We have basic rods and tackle to set up simple paternoster rigs etc. And shrimp traps for bait. I'm trying to find out if soft plastics are worth a go, I have a couple snaggy spots close to shore to bait up in, I want to really see if the swan river techniques I have learnt over the years will work here. Also would a running sinker down to a medium sized hook with a fresh prawn work well, or maybe too snaggy ? Cheers

Rescue crews respond to boat in distress off Carnarvon on WA coast
A commercial fishing boat has broadcast a distress call off Cape Cuvier, 100 kilometres north of Carnarvon on the Western Australian coast.
The 12.9-metre vessel Joan Jay is believed to have anchored 12 nautical miles north of Cape Cuvier after experiencing electrical problems and taking on water.
There are three men on board.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is coordinating with WA Water Police to assist the stricken vessel.
Water Police said the skipper activated the onboard EPIRB about 8:10am to alert authorities.
A Dornier aircraft is en route to assist, along with a Port Authority vessel and three commercial boats.
The aircraft is expected to reach the boat early this afternoon.

New Goodies for the Boat
Submitted by Heinz on Mon, 2015-08-03 13:04With the recent purchase of a few goodies for the boat (HDS 9 Gen2 Touch and a new homemade esky) I was keen to give the sounder and hopefully the esky a bit of testing on the water last Sunday. Me, my old boy and 2 of my mates launched at Two Rocks and headed to a couple of spots my mate picked off his sounder. Managed a couple of fish whilst playing with the sounder, which worked a treat and found a few new spots along the way.

But the real standout was the esky, kept all the fish fresh (bloody close to frozen) and doubled as a perfect platform in the tub for pliers, rags and dhuies!
. Just gotta add a few bits and pieces such as handles and a slideout tray for sinkers and she will be complete!

Don't mind the crooked G-Loomis sticker, too many red cans during fabrication
Will hopefully have a few new screenshots of the sounder in a few more weeks........ weather permitting.
New sinker totes where the old compressor was.

All up she has cost me $90 including fridge from the tip, stickers, carpet, totes and carbie cleaner to get all the old stickers and spray paint off

Hull Age. How old is too old?
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Mon, 2015-08-03 09:13I am looking around for fibreglass boats at the moment and am either going to buy one with a newish hull and outboard or one with an older hull with a newish outboard and will be paying someone to do an assessment of the hull/trailer/outboard but how old is too old when it comes to hull age?
I’ve seen a couple of hulls that are 15 years old and in pretty good knick but haven’t pulled the trigger because of the age of the hull. It’s not so much the age of the hull today that worries more but it’s more that in 5 years time it will be a 20 year old hull and I’m expecting issues to start popping up.
I’m sure there’s a few member with hull of the same vintage and am interested in what issues I can expect with a 15 year old hull going forward.

DIY motor service issues
Submitted by rj on Sun, 2015-08-02 15:08So I had my first go at carrying out the service on my 135hp mercury 2 stroke today, including changing the water pump and top housing. When I pulled the lower section out, the water pump to motor feed pipe came with it, now I can't seem to get the lower unit back in. I cant get the water pipe to seat back in the motor, the pipe is a but floppy out the water pump (flexing on the seal) and therefore won't line up at the motor end. I read the manual, can't find any tips or hints and have looked on YouTube and all the video's showing water pump replacemt do not show the water pipe, so I am assuming it is meant to stay in the motor and leg when pulling the lower unit out. Had any one come across this, and/or any ideas??
Thanks

Yardie Creek/ Tantabiddy/ coral bay help
Submitted by Blanikman on Sun, 2015-08-02 13:34Gday all,
I am fortunate enough to be going out from tantabiddy/ yardie creek in a 6 m ally plate boat in a couple of weeks. Just wondering if anyone has been up there recently and pehaps after a few tips as I am used to catching herring etc down south and have not much idea of fishing up that way.
Any recent reports on how the ramp is and can you launch in all tides?
Id be stoked to get onto some spanish mackeral or tuna. I have a tld20 with 30 lb mono and 10-15 kg rd, another rod with 30 lb braid and a penn slammer 760 on a 8-12 kg outfit. Do you think these'll do the job?
In terms of lures, I have a large scorpion in chartruse, a halco max 130 in silver/pink, redhead rapala magnum with metal bib, a couple of 20ft Xraps in light orange/yellow, and a sebile koolie minnow in brown mottled pattern 150mm. Would these be fine lures for trolling? I have upgraded to single hooks and better rings on all of them.I
What depth should i troll and is there a plan of attack or should I just go anywhere? My mate up at the Merrian islands said 15 m was a good start, but I have no idea for Tantabiddy.
I would rather get pelagics, but if there are none around, Id be happy to bottom bounce. Any tips on rigs/ depths/ what I should see on the sounder for this? do I need ganged hooks or will singles do and what size? I have bulk packs of Gama J hooks in 7/0 and 3/0.
Any help appreciated.

Oceanside Tackle and Marine - Super Deep Talk Night
Submitted by Oceanside Tackle on Sat, 2015-08-01 15:36Oceanside Tackle and Marine owner Ryan Thipthorp has been at the fore front of Super Deep fishing for many years now. Ryan's dedicated thousands of hours and many many trips to fully suss out targeting super deep species with excellent results.
When it comes to reading and understanding a sounder, Ryan is known as one of the best around. Targeting super deep species on jig isn't easy but Ryan has perfected it with good results. All us staff here at Oceanside have our own boats and get into these super deep fish on jig & baits. Ryan has taught us plenty to make us full bottle on super deep fishing, one of the perks of working at Oceanside.
There has been a big increase in this form of fishing ie 200-500m and there's plenty of anglers out there wanting to know more about sounders and super deep info. Ryan has been asked to do these talks for many years now but due to his filming/traveling schedule it hasn't been easy but it did happen recently.
Rhyss from Taylor Marine/Furuno organised a talk night at Cockburn Power Boat Club last night with Ryan,Reese (staff member) and myself Marc (staff member) attending. On the night Ian McNeill from Taylor Marine/Furuno was there also to talk about Furuno sounders followed by Ryan giving an in depth talk about targeting super deep species which included sounder set up, target depths, explanation of super deep sounder pics and a comprehensive Q&A.
Reese and myself went through in detail also about electrics reels/rods/braid/rigs/jigs/techniques and much much more. The night was capped at 120 people, we could of double that amount with the huge response which was good to see. So for that reason we're having a second night and details will be posted on here so stay tuned for that.
We just want to say a big Thankyou to Rhyss Whittred, Ian McNeil,Taylor Marine,Furuno Australia,Cockburn Power Boat Club and all our customers that turned up for a great and very informative night.
Thanks - Oceanside Team
A good crowd enjoying plenty of in depth info.
Ian McNeil talking about the basics of Furuno sounders. Ryan Thipthorp took over talking about Super Deep Furuno Sounder info.
Staff member Marc Russell talking about Super Deep rigs, jigs and techniques etc
Staff member Reese Powell talking about Super Deep electric reels, rods and techniques etc

Land-based fishing
Submitted by vinniefisho on Fri, 2015-07-31 19:20Hey everyone,
Well my birthday is coming up and I am planning to go fishing somewhere, was hoping to catch some bread and butter fish along with a bigger rod for maybe a bigger fish or a ray or a shark? Can anyone help me with any spots that I might be able to get something a bit bigger? Last birthday we went to Rockingham Jetty and I got a little Mulloway of about 14kg (which was released) Will be fishing from about 3 in the arvo to about 2 or 3 in the morning so will be happy to wait a while if its worth it. Any help would be much appreciated:)
Cheers, Vinnie
