West Side Vs East Side (West metro vs Eastern States Metro) Fishing

after a number of outings now coming up with donuts especially in the Swan and Canning and a fair bit of experience fishing the east coast of Australia with better success it got me thinking, while the eastern side of Australia has a bass season along with a number of other freshwater natives, a strong bream fishery, mulloway or jewies on plastics and large falthead, excluding far north WA and south what does the Perth Metro area have to offer in comparison?

Whats everyones take on this? and whats everyonesfavourite fish to target and at what time of the year?

Winds

I have the rest of the week off and want to take my 4.3m tinnie out as much as possible to the five fathom so what winds are favourable for me to look at to go fishing from warnbro sound or Cockburn sound tomorrow is easterlies in the morning I think I heard some where that easterlies are no good is this true if so what winds do I look out for being  a smaller boat wanting to fish cheers

The Shredder gets a Mate - The Sucker

Following the successful construction of the Shredder (see: http://fishwrecked.com/forum/shredder-mk-2) (although a new and improved larger Shredder is on the drawing board), it was time to get it a mate.   I personally hate buying fish products in shoddy packaging that have suffered freezer burn from being stored for excessive periods.  Also, if we are going to make the Shore Catch Fish Product Burley for commercial sale then we need a good packaging method to ensure it is delivered in a premium state.  We also plan to commercially import (from other Australian States) and sell some select baits (especially for pinkies and cray pots) so we needed a way to pack these as well.

Welcome to “The Sucker”.  We purchased this item at auction today and it is ideal for the job that we want to do.  This “beast” has a 470 x 630 x 235mm chamber size and can suck 63 cubic metres per hour.  The double chamber also allows setting up one while the other is vacuuming and sealing.  It was quite an investment but our business is about suppling quality products so an item like this is really a necessity to do the job properly.  We want every fish product purchased from us to be properly vacuum sealed.

In other developments, we received positive feedback from the City of Wanneroo regarding our planning application to allow multiple uses at a premises in Buckingham Drive Wangara – it’s a good thing I have written technical reports to gain development approvals for land use projects for the last 30 years.  This approval will allow other permits from the Department of Fisheries and WA Police to issue and ensure that everything we want to do is lawful under the relevant planning scheme.  Having had to learn the requirements of the planning scheme, I must admit I was amazed by the number of businesses that are actually non-conforming uses.  This is a matter for the City however and none of my business, but an interesting observation that I think is due more to a non-flexible scheme rather than the business owners that are just giving it a crack in difficult circumstances.  We hope to open our premises in early November and I will keep Members updated regarding progress and the products and services we will offer in due course.

Whilst I am on the “soapbox”, what is the go with vendor’s unrealistic expectations in relation to price of second hand goods?  In the same auction, I also had the winning bid for a commercial mixer/mincer.  The final price was not trivial and actually amounted to 34% of the new price.  This for something that was used, you could not test and was put on the market through a reputable auctioneer.  There were a lot of bidders and I do think that my winning bid was a bit above wholesale value as it was not a product that I was seeking to buy and on-sell – as many dealers do at auctions.  The “Sucker” was actually  about the same % and it sold.  The old adage that “something is only worth what someone is prepared to pay” applies here.  Anyway, I can buy a similar product for less from various other outlets so I guess it is their loss.  I just need to think of a “S” name for that machine as well

Groote Eylandt

G'day all,  I am lucky enough to be up on Groote Eylandt for the next 2 weeks or so for work.

Anyone here able to point me in the right direction for LB spots or want a deckie after work hours? I may have a day or 2 off during stint.

I threw the handline in for 20mins this arvo but the sun had disappeared and just before it did I watched a 2meter croc lurking 50mtrs off the shore. Once it got to

the point where his vision was better than mine I bailed! First time I have seen 1 in the wild.

Cheers, Adam

mangrove creek fishing

Gday all,
I'm a bit north of Broome and having a go at fishing the mangroves for the first time, just after some advice on the best tide/times to fish the creeks?

Had a go this morning, managed to get some whiting and mullet for live bait and ended up landing a nice little jack and a cod both about 45-50cm.
These came within 15 minutes of each other and had no other runs in the 3 or so hours i was there. Lots of mullet, baitfish etc around.
Tried again this arvo towards the bottom of the run-out, got a smaller jack and smaller cod and bitten of by suspected shark, for about another 3 hours effort. Using left over bait from the morning so dead but fresh. Hardly any baitfish seen.

So yeah,jJust after some general advice (or even links to places i can find it) regarding how best to fish the mangrove creeks. TIA

Mercury Revcounter not resetting to 0?

 Hi guys,

My boats electrics are now done and she is almost ready to go into the water for Setup and testing.

Quick Question - do all Mercury rev counters stay at about 1000 RPM when the boat is turned off, as mine seems to stay at the last reading, but resets when the key is toggled on and off again? is this normal?

Cheers,

Hi all just wondering if anyone is using a fish cooler bag instead of an esky and what are your thoughts ? looking at getting one to sit in the kill tank to save a bit of deck room.

Deckies wanted : Pink snapper fishing

Hi all

Seems hard to find crew and my spearo mates dont seem to keen on line fishing. I'm an experienced Spearo - not so experienced lino, keen to get into some pink snapper before the closure in the cockburn sound and five fathom bank.

Based in Rockingham, have a 5m Trailcraft Bowrider.

Seeking some experienced or semi experienced Pink Snapper fishermen to take out on my boat and show me how its done. Keen to get out as often as I can when the weather is good, sunrise and/or sunset.

Changing the boat i just bought from inboard to outboard

Hi all.

I recently bought a second hand 640 trailcraft which is setup for a inboard, it has no motor in it at the moment just the old leg. I need a bit of help understanding what has to be done converting from inboard to outboard, I know I need to remove the old leg and get a pod made up, but im not sure on what happens with the old fuel tank?? Can it be used for the new outboard? Also what happens with the steering? I’m guessing that has to be completely done again.

If anyone has converted before or knows any bit of information that is a big help.

Cheers

Where to Catch Yellowtail (for bait)

G'day Guys,

Just wondering if anyone know where I can catch yellowtail for bait. I'm getting tired of paying $8:50 for a pack of yellowtail (actually cots me $17 cos I usually get 2 packs).
Used to get heaps from the yacht club and palm beach jetties but that was years ago.
NOR or SOR doesn't bother me and I've also got a boat so boat or landbased.

Thanks

Exmouth - 2 weeks and counting

Tyrnos TD-16

Hi

Had some problems with my Tyrnos TD16 a while back, so decided to open it and have a look. Picture attached is of the right side cover. A brass nut is visible in the centre of the picture. The drag lever fits over this. This nut can not move and I am thinking this is the problem as I believe it should move with the drag lever. Does anyone know if this should be able to rotate, or if it is meant to be fixed in position in the right cover.

Cheers

Eric

What's your favorite bit of gear?

When I was about 13 I saved up for my first overhead. It was a Shimano 3GT star drag. Cost me $92 at Kmart in 1990, and then christened it with a bonito off snapper point on the south coast of NSW. Exciting for me as a 13 year old at the time. Always had a thing for this reel.  It's caught many fish and I've still got it, and it now has a bigger brother, the 4GT that I bought off ebay last week.

It's a budget reel, but unbreakable and full of good memories for me just from looking at it.

Anyone else holding onto a bit of gear they can't part with?

Lights beach today( white pointer)

2 surfing they get out quick. That is one big fin. Guy I work with mate took photo on phone. Wouldn't surf there

Updated Kalbarri nav marker pics

I've updated the rivermouth pics in the WA boat launching facilitiers thread to show the markers added last year. Pic is below if you can't be bothered going into the full content.

Dive Tank Holders - Boat

What have people fitted to their boats to hold two or more tanks? I have a Fibreglass boat and Looking for a rail/rack system which allows you to remove/fold down brackets when not in use - keeping a slimline profile etc. you can push esky/engel up against. Roll Control (USA) looks good, along with Wilsecure/Hampdon style(Wangara WA). Also came accross Railblaza (NZ) at Whitworths - but looks bulky. Any info on different brands / places to look much appreciated.

Shark bay Safety

Heading up Saturday for 10days, starting with 3 in Kalbarri. What is the safety radio call/station for Denham. Know Kalbarri but wasnt contemplating heading out, mostly upstram for bream, crabs and soapies for fun.

In denham also not trying to fill freezers, so not heading very far out. Will try for squid and light line snapper, whether size or not. Then target whiting.

Pinky session

With everyone else getting into the pinks, thought I'd try myself. Anchored up 1.5 hours before sunset, burley trail of cubed mulies. Just before sunset got the 68 cm one, got 4 more about same size which were released as I was hoping for the big one, 30 mins after sun down and a couple of stingrays later got the big one. 90cm and 11.2 kg on bathroom scales. Caught on 6/0 snelled owner hooks with a mulie and small squid on same hooks as bait.

Boat Storage NOR

Anyone have any recommendation for somewhere to store my trailer boat for a couple of months while our house is on the market? Prefer NOR.

Spoke to Perth Boat Storage already and just wondering what other options might be available rather than someone's paddock in woop woop.

Sunday morning

Just after some thoughs on a Cockburn sound mission this coming Sunday, me and a couple of mates keen to get up early for an attempt for pinkies, will probably throw a few squid jigs about too for bait and lunch. Any tips or pointers would be great, we are launching from Woodies. We will be using mulies and squid, and I want to try some plastics as I have never really used them before. Thanks.

Anyone from Kalbarri?

Will be heading up that way from the 18th to the 27th of this month. Will be solo until the long weekend, just wondering if there is anyone up that way that would fancy catchijg up for a fish. Will be bringing up a newly acquired 4.7 stacer as well. Real inexperienced boaty so if you have a bit of experience of kalbarri waters and you fancy a day out on a boat let me know!
