Transportation of fillets

 Hey guys,

just reading up on transportation of fillets/ possession of fillets

Hyperthetically. My mates are going up north for a few weeks fishing,

i can can only go for a week. So have to fly up and back,

do i

(a) take my fish back on airplane

(B) leave the fish with them  in freezer labelled  and with all my details of flights ect ect

the way I read it it says it can't be taken back by a commercial courier

And also  that who ever is in charge of freezer/vessel what ever the fish is stored in, is deemed owner of fillets. unless otherwise proven ( hence  the leaving of details/proof )

any help will be much appreciated

Cheers

Dan

Mandurah Boat show

Howdy all,

The boat show is on next weekend and keen as mustard to get there as always. However, I normally do my run on a Sunday with the Fam for casual outing and a lookise. Never serious buying. This year, heading in with my C/cards on the ready, guns a blazing. What's the best day? I assume Friday will be quieter crowds, but is everyone there set up and ready to wheel and deal or are the bargins on an Sunday.... or all gone?

Cheers

Cray pots

Read the article regarding dropping or pulling your mates pots in the West Australian.
Have searched the fisheries web site but cant find anything about the new law . Any ideas what the article was supposed to mean . Quite confusing .

Deep drop fishing

Eyes wide shut - now opened.
On Friday night I enjoyed a most pleasant evening that really opened my eyes to what is involved in fishing deep water for big fish.

I attend the presentation of what is involved in chasing big deep dwelling fish at the Deep Drop Fishing Presentation, held at the Cockburn Power Boat Club.
This presentation was sponsored by Oceanside Tackle and a lot of people with vast experience in all the aspects of this activity where in attendance.
The presentations where headed up by Ryan from Oceanside tackle and he needs no introduction to all of those who have an interest in this developing sport fishing activity.
Various presenters gave freely their vast and hard gained knowledge on what sort of sounding equipment you will need to pursue these fish together, with an explanation of "what is my sounder telling me". Thus I'm sure enhancing the knowledge of all who attended the night, from novices (like me)and to the experienced fishos.

This was followed by an explanation of what sort of ground these dwellers of the deep like to inhabit, and that was a real eye opener, the most salient point being you are not looking for jagged pinnacle type of bottom. With the use of sounder screen shots it was explained very well the type of bottom you need to be on and what various sounder screen shots depicted. This sort of stuff only comes from those people who have put in the hard yards and time needed to gain it, it was further explained that if you start catching "green eye sharks" you are not where you need to be.

Other various knowledgeable presenters also divulged hard earned knowledge about the type of gear you will need to employ to be successful at catching these large fish. To me it was very clear, you can spend a lot of dollars on good gear but, if it's not the right type of gear for this type of fishing then you have wasted your hard earned cash on gear that is high value, but is not what you need to be successful in the pursuit of deep dwelling big fish.

The most salient points (to me) being the amount of line your reel needs to hold and the very short rods used, when it was explained just why this type of gear was used you thought well that's just common sense isn't it, except you never thought of it did you dahhh.

At the mid presentation break all presenters made themselves available for questioning and this was when you could collar them and ask questions that you where to embarrassed to ask aloud for fear of showing just how much you didn't know (well for me any way).

Everyone that I asked for information came forth with a vast amount of information willingly and in language that was clear and concise ie: "that's crap and doesn't work", no nonsense.

To the people who gave their knowledge about fish finders, what they are telling you, the importance of getting them set up right, books of reference (and I must say the publication by John Adams is priceless)together with the best of the deep fishos on how to go about it, and the gear to use.

All this knowledge has been gained by these people over a long period of practical experience and was given so freely you could not put a price on it.

To CPBC your facility was great and a most comfortable venue for such an evening, to all the presenters my sincere thank you and to Oceanside Tackle a big thank you for putting this night together.

To Ryan you have done a great service to those of use who wish to pursue monster fish from the deep.

Dodgy Bali Scales, and "the Site"

I’m not sure why, but the better half persuaded me to take the family on a holiday to Bali just before the demersal ban when the big pinkies are around?  Still here, but come home on Sunday.

Having never been to Bali before, I must say it is a lovely place with fantastic people and culture.  We have had a driver so have been to many places and seen many things and I am sure to want to come back in the future.  There are a couple of observations that I wanted to pass on so Members were aware if you decide to visit.  I am certainly not trying to be negative as it is an awesome place with awesome people.

The first observation is about the seafood restaurants and  the need to be vigilant.  We decided to head to Jimbaran Beach for dinner one night, and to watch the sunset.  What a great location.

As it was a seafood restaurant and I don’t eat seafood, I had to go up to order my non-seafood meal with one of our guests.  At this place, you can select your fish, prawns or squid from the ice slurries and they are weighed and passed through to the kitchen for cooking a variety of ways using different methods.  All good with excellent looking meals being prepared.  So, my friend asked me what fish to pick and the old story “if its red its generally tasty” came to the front and I picked what seemed to be a red snapper in good condition of about 300mm long.  Then came the shock when he put it on the scales.  Now I have weighed a lot of fish in my day, and observed them being weighed on certified scales, and generally have a pretty good idea about what a fish weighs.  Now this little red snapper of about half a kilo somehow pulled up on the scales at 1.3kg.  I looked at this guy and told him he had to be kidding!!!!

Needless to say he was very unhappy with my comment and asked me how would I know.  I do have an “arsenal” of photos of fish on my phone and showed him a photo of a 50cm+ KG that weighed about 800g.  I also showed him a photo of a pinkie that weighed 3kg and was 5-6 times bigger than the little red snapper.  He said I didn’t know what I was talking about and told me how little my fish were.  Time to inspect the scales.

For a start, the scales were showing 200gm with nothing on them.  Add the metal bowl, and the fish, and you got to his number.  Why do we have to pay for the weight of the bowl I asked, and you have not even zeroed the scale?  By this time he didn’t like me at all, and was getting quite hostile, so he reduced the fish weight to a kilo (still double what it was in my opinion) just to get us to go away.  With a few people in line it was time to move on.

Being the OCD type of person that I am, I stewed on this rip off over dinner (which was pretty good I must say).  I had to see if I was right or fish are just really heavy here.  So the cunning plan was to get a bottle of water (330mL) and weigh that when dinner was over, and no one was looking, and see what it was on the scales.  What do you know, about 350g of water and bottle weighed about 700g on the scales.  Much to the embarrassment of my family, me and our dinner guest (that can speak the language) took them to task over this.  To their credit, they didn’t question us and refunded half of the cost of the seafood to ensure we didn’t take it any further.  I don’t know how many people pick these things up but there is clearly a lot of extra cash coming in, or in the alternate the prices on the menu are too cheap per unit of weight.  We got a reasonable result in the end and I guess the message is to watch everything that is going on when people are trying to sell you stuff.

The next observation made me sad.  When we first got to Bali, I asked our driver to take me past the memorial and site of the 2002 atrocities.  For understandable reasons, some members of our group did not want to dwell on the event so we just drove by.  I know the impact that the event had, and still has, on many good people and started to do some research on it with many hours of reading about how wrong it all was and what great people were taken.  I had to go there and in a way pay my personal respects to those that were lost, as my readings had brought me close to the event and the people involved.

With the family wanting to go to Kuta for the beach and shopping (we are staying in Sanur), it provided me the opportunity to walk the couple of kilometres from the beach to the site and have the time to myself to reflect.  The memorial at the site of Paddy’s is an awesome thing and the governments and people involved should be proud of what they have done.  It is a fitting tribute at the site that was Paddy’s Bar.

The Sari Club site is a different thing altogether though.  It is located across the road from the memorial and is currently an unsealed car park.

I wandered into the site to have a close look and I must say was not particularly impressed with what I saw.  The rear of the site is basically a bit of a rubbish dump with the remnants of the tiling of the old toilets still affixed to the boundary walls.  This area is generally derelict.

The front is the car park area with a couple of shop booths near the entrance.  I didn’t ask how much it was to park but I suppose it would provide a service for those wishing to attend the memorial across the road.

Probably the most disturbing thing is saw was someone using the site as an open air urinal.  I had read a number of reports about this practice but to see it first hand was disappointing.

The site was also “home” to some underprivileged people that had erected temporary accommodation.  I guess this is just an opportunistic use of the site.

I read a lot about the issues at the site, and the efforts of some Australians to have the site turned into a peace park.  It seems that the site owner is willing to sell it, but at 5-6 times the market price.  Also, the guy that has a 30 year lease on the site is unwilling to relinquish it.  To its credit however, the Indonesian Government appears to have placed a moratorium on any development of the site.  It could potentially compulsorily acquire it but this would no doubt be a political nightmare that would have to be funded from somewhere.  So, I guess it is a stalemate and it will continue to be used as a car park for the foreseeable future.  It is unfortunate as it would be good to see a respectful use at the site rather than what it is now.

As noted above, Bali is an awesome place and the above is not intended to be a criticism.  It is just a couple of observations that I thought Members may be interested in.  I will certainly be coming back and encourage people to do the same.  Hopefully the wind is kind on my return and there are still some pinkies with my name on them before the ban.

Mobile electronics installer

Hi all,

My Garmin GPS/Sounder 12 inch combo has shit itself and I'm looking at getting a 587 sounder and Simrad/ Lowrance 9 inch GPS unit installed depending on prices at the boat show next week. Only drama is that I have a Airmac TM260 1kw tranny with a Garmin plug that's going to need to be spliced into a Furuno plug. I'm looking at getting something to cover the hole in the dash and need to have the holes re cut to hold the new equipment.

Although it's something that I'm sure I could sit down and work out myself and persevere, it's also a big investment in $$$ and want it done well.

Can anyone recommend someone to do this sort of work?

Thanks

toyota prado

Hey
We are looking to get into a Toyota Prado diesel, I have only previously had a AWD and been looking around.
Toyota seem to hold resale so, seem like a good buy.
Don't have any 4wd experience but am keen to start, had a reality check a few weeks ago. A mate was up north on a vessel, was only 53 and had a heart attack. Couldn't be saved so enough of not taking life to the fullest.

Have googled jeep and not to keen after seeing the moose test etc.

Any thoughts on the Prado?
Thanks
ShaneO

Nice Pinkie

Just saw this on Facebook. Nice pinkie. 13.5kg.

Sandy Cape

Hey guys, heading up to Sandy Cape over the weekend and wondering if anyone has been there lately and what the fishing is like? Get to test out my new Navara so access is no issues. Also, is there any mobile coverage up there?

Cheers!

Crayfish Season 2015/16

 Hi All,

Thought I would start a thread for the 2015/16 crayfish season, I have searched the forum for information on using cray pots but thought I would start thread about where you will be getting your crays this year, when you will start dropping your pots and what depths you will be hunting in. This year will be my first year at having a crack dropping the pots, I have all ways gone diving for my crays all have done well off the scarborough reefs in about 14 metres of water. This year due to living further north I will be setting the pots out from Mindarie in about 10-15 metres of water see how we go we will have 4 pots so it will be a bit trial and error trying to find them. What is everybody elses plans to catch crays this year?

Electric Reels

Its the time of year with the snapper ban in place and the demersal ban to closely follow that I think about going deep. The difference being this year I will go the distance and invest in the gear to get started. I'm looking at two reels and I would greatly appreciate opinion from others. Shimano Plays 9000, Daiwa Tanacom Bull 1000 I'm a bit of a Shimano tragic so I'm leaning in that direction.

Friday Funnys

Enjoy

mandurah - 2nd week of school holidays

Well, after a long fishing drought i am set to break it next week in mandurah.  Last time i wet a line was steep point in may this year.  Fishing desires have been put on hold over winter while i found a new car as the engine karked it in the last one coming back from steep point, and i also undertook installing a kill tank into the boat.  In amongst that some family dramas and challenges have kept my focus, but fingers crossed they're all moving in a positive direction.  Most recently the misses did her MCL in her right knee which threw our plans for a week in mandurah into disarray.  But she has declared herself fit and so we're off.  I have to work the first few days but i have checked the forecast and later in the week may be promising.

So it is time to put the kill tank to the test and hopefully fill it with some fish.

Getting two new cray pots delivered to me while we're there, and found a local selling second hand cray pot rope.  So in my down time I'll have some splicing to do.  I'll find time to catch some herring for cray bait come november, and might even putter up the murray and have a counter meal at the ravenswood.

nice day on the river

put in at east freo, our daughter and her 2 kids, cruised down to the moles, went into the fishing boat harbour had some lunch, put the pick down in 4 metres bit of berly and the fish turned it on for my little crewie, lots of skips, yellow tail and butterfish, threw most back, good fun, went for a cruise to blackwall reach and then back to the ramp, great day out

wrap snapper racks

Looking at putting wrap around stainless steel snapper racks on the Surtee's can anyone suggest a local mob that has them,I dont want the poxy 3 way things that some of the tackle stores stock

Finally I'm on the board

went out a few nights ago before the ban kicked in and finally got myself a pinkie

Im very much bad luck when it comes to fishing but that didn't stop me from getting my own boat. After a few teething problems with it and my piss poor fishing ability the first handful of excursions hadn't been much chop

After a fair bit of studying a sunset trip to finally bring home a pinkie was agreed with me my dad and his mate

After a couple of stingrays we finally got a bit of action and my line went of like a train hit it. As the rod was in the rod holder it actually broke my rodholder when it took of. After a bit of a fight which wasn't too light as I'm nit going to be fishing light until I have actually got some fish on-board I'd hate to lose one when I haven't court one;) well I netted a 80cm pinkie. All three on the boat actually hooked up at this stage but only one boarded.

I took some photos baited dropped back down then bang on again within 2 mins. This time a slightly smaller 70cm version was pulled aboard. We had a few more hook ups and a visit from a north west blowies. Then our night was over.

The boat still has a couple of issues and my fishing ability is still very suspect not to mention my skippering ability but I'm on the board and couldn't be happier.

And thanks to the guys who commentated on my previous post asking for tips muchly appreciated

Port Hedland GFC 2015 Pil Barra Tournament Shirt

Just received approval for the shirt design for the Tournament and I thought I would show Members, and give the Tournament a “plug”.

This is a Tournament where there is one major sponsor so it allowed a shirt design that could be made to be reflective of the sponsors logo.  It is also a Barramundi Tournament so the fish image had to reflect the awesome nature of the fish.  After much “scouring” of images I was lucky enough to find a good one, and be lucky enough to be able to contact the photographer who would sell me the original high resolution image at a reasonable price.  Through a couple of iterations we developed a design that hopefully meets the brief of doing justice to the major sponsor, and the fish, whilst providing a shirt that the competitors will be happy to own.  The “approved” design is illustrated below.

The Tournament is on Friday the 6th, Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of November 2015.  The briefing will be held on Friday the 6th at the Club Rooms McKay St Port Hedland, with fishing commencing immediately after.  Weigh in commences at 2pm on Sunday and closes at 5pm with presentations to follow.  It is a “no take” competition with all Barra to be measured, photographed and released.  If you want more information contact Hedley on 0407 427 452 or Gavin on 0427 011 991.

The cost is a very reasonable $70 for adults and $35 for juniors and if you sign up by Monday 19 October you get one of the shirts for free – I think that is a really good deal as you may pay more than that for a shirt like this in the shops.  Please support the Club and go after some of the great prizes on offer.

Speaking of shops, I am happy to report that I received advice from the City of Wanneroo that my town planning application for change of use of a premises to allow, Showroom, Light Industry, Warehouse and Offices has been approved.  It was a fair effort to find a suitable location, and then get the approvals for the uses I want to conduct there, and I am glad this phase of work is complete – although the hard work starts now.  The premises address is 7 / 65 Buckingham Drive Wangara and I will provide more details about it in future posts.  Cheers.  Mick

New AWQ - VHF Lisence

The new lisence has been released.

http://www.acma.gov.au/~/media/Spectrum%20Licensing%20Policy/Fact%20sheets/PDF/AWQ%20fact%20sheet_final%20pdf.pdf

Any idea where in Perth I can sit the AWQ VHF lisence exam? I phoned a few sea rescue organisations who either have not heard about the new licence or not aware that it has been released.

Abrolhos - Pelseart Group

Just back from the maiden trip to the Pelseart Group with the BIL – was worth waiting for good weather! Firstly, a big thanks to Rob H and Paul G for all the information re. anchorages, weather etc – much appreciated guys. Wouldn’t have been as easy a trip without the knowledge gained.

Covered 125nm over three days for 165L fuel (Honda 135HP). Anchored up at the Bity holes both nights. The first evening, we had two other boats accompany us, with the place to ourselves the second evening. What a place. The island is alive. Whales breaching everywhere on the way out. Fishing was great, although hard to land anything of substance, which took line out, due to sharks nabbing them (straightened a few hooks and lost a few rigs). Had to move spots after a couple of drops on each lump once the sharks were in - Don’t want to feed them! However, we still did pretty well landing dhuies, baldies, coral trout etc and coming home with cryovac fillets. The sweetlips were a pest out there! The weather really put it on for us. Trolled wreck point for a couple of hours and hooked one YFT – however dropped it boat-side – devastating to say the least! Cannot wait to get back out there and explore Pelseart further early 2016 (if not Xmas / NY – weather permitting).

Can highly recommend this trip to anyone interested – keen. Just pick your weather and ensure you have sufficient water, fuel etc. and be sure to notify dept. fisheries in Gero.

Boys first Dhu

With a few commitments in the morning yesterday my son James and I didn't get to the ramp until about 12pm but we were both keen to get out for a fish. When we left home the breeze seemed pretty light but getting closer to the coast you could see the trees moving a bit. Organised, we headed out into a lumpy ocean from Hillarys. The breeze was doing better than forecast with the occasional whitecap rolling through. James though had been reading the measuring sticker and was asking about WA Dhufish and after answering his 20 questions he declared that was what he was going to catch.

We anchored up in about 16m of water after seeing a good show on the sounder and even though we were getting tossed around I rigged up an outfit for James and he sent it to the bottom. I hadn't even got my rig out of the rod holder when he claimed he was getting bites. Not long after he said he had a fish on! When I looked over the rod was bent over and leaning on the gunnel and I was sure he was caught on the bottom. I went to try and free the rod and felt some action on the end. He couldn't reel the fish in himself without falling overboard so I lifted while he wound and we worked as a team.

When it breaks the surface he sees his first Dhu and at 53cms although it was legal, I've heard stories of them shrinking so after a couple of pics we sent it back. We got our lines back in the water and not long after James called seasick so we packed up left. He was quite happy with the fact he caught the biggest fish of the day since I only got a wrasse! As soon as we were underway he was fine again so we motored back to the ramp happy.

Demersial ban cockburn sound snapper ban

This is going to look a bit silly but, can someone please tell me when the demersial fishing ban comes into being and, when does the ban on catching snapper in Cockburn sound come into force.
I've just been looking at the fisheries site and I can't see any reference to either.

If some one could post up a link it would be most appreciated, I hate getting old!

New Sounder/GPS opinions about Simrad

 Gday Fishwrecked crew,

Well just purchased a 660 Assassin hard top picking it up next week just a little bit happy. Only have to add a Sounder and GPS.

Was just going to get a Furuno sounder and a separate gps. But i am very impressed with the Simrad NSS 12 evo2, blown away by its capability.

I would like to hear from any of you if you have got one.

Look forward to your comments

Kind regards

Stoinka
