Landbased overhead rod suggestions?

I've just got a new Trinidad 16a for land based live-baiting for tuna/mackies, most of my fishing is done from jettys and rocks so I'm looking for something about 8-9ft. I'm currently using a terez 8 foot 20-50lb which is perfect but it's getting a bit old and shitty and I'm under the impression that the new design doesn't have this particular model.

cheers for any suggestions

Denham this summer

Gday everyone

This is my first post on the website, and really the first time that ive used it.

This school holidays I am going to Denham for a fishing trip. I know that it gets windy up that way, but is there any time that I can go and it be calm?

I was also wondering if someone could tell me generally where to go (Not give away your personal spots). I have a 3.75 metre tinny with a 15hp outboard, fitted with a sounder and a GPS.

Lastly, what gear should I bring up with me, and what species should I expect?

Thank you in advance for any relpies

Pies get their man in Treloar

Now we need to get Aish.not sure about Howe, seems like a one trick pony. How is your club going with only one day to go

has anyone used the fish hunter

hi im looking at buying the fish hunter 3d sounder www.fishhunter.com/home it looks real interesting it can be used from a boat from a jetty ect, you just need a android or iphone to use it....

Squid jigs

Hey all, quick question. When squidding do you guys use a snap swivel or tie directly to the lure?

I know the snap swivel is easier to change jigs but just wondering if they change the action too much?

Installing a Skin Fitting

I am installing a second automatic bilge pump and transducer and the diameter of the through hull fittings are 21mm and 26mm but the hole saw fittings at Bunnings and Masters only come in 20 or 22mm and 25 or 29mm. Is it just a case of cutting through the hull at the smaller diametre and filing it out or are there specialty hole saw bits I can track down?

Boat Ramp etiquette?

Hi Guys,

My wife was chatting to a retired old bloke yesterday that has been fishing and boating for years around WA, and he mentioned boat ramp etiquette, that us "younger blokes never adhere to..

He said that on a double boat ramp, like Sbay, with a jetty in the middle, left is always for launching and right is always for retrieving the boats...? Is this just an old guys tale, or is/was this an unwritten etiquette expectation from years past in WA?

I did my skippers ticket about 5 years ago, and don't remember anything about his, so may be pissing heaps of blokes off at the ramp on the weekends?

Not sure how this would work either - I just launch and retrieve according to the wind on the day - easiest ramp in and out?

Monties advice with your own boat

 Hi all

Im in the process of organising a monties trip for next year taking my own boat with 2 or 3 onboard and possibly another boat with 2 onboard im chasing some info off those that have done the trip with there own boat before. We will be fishing and diving. My boat is a 7.5m alloy with twin 225 yammies i currently have 440l fuel but will be fitting another 250l before the trip just to be safe. i would get there and back with the 440l but it wouldn't leave much for looking around once there.  This will be the first big trip on the boat so just trying to make sure we get everything covered.

1. Whats the best time of year to go?

2. Are there any restrictions on staying there?

3. Where have you stayed and what was good about it?

4. Are there any islands that are worth sight seeing?

5. Are there any spots that you think are a must see wether it be above or below the water?

Is there anything else we should know or need to keep in mind.

I still havent made my mind up about where to launch.

Cheers

Shore Catch - Licenced Second Hand Dealing in Fishing and Boating Equipment

Members,

Just putting this out there for interest and comment.  Sorry to “bombard” you with Shore Catch material lately but I really respect the opinions of knowledgeable Members, and they help me with my business planning – better check with Adam about my allowable commercial posts under the sponsorship arrangement!

As previously indicated, our premises in Wangara has 122 square metres of showroom, plus associated warehouse.  Today, I lodged my application with the WA Police for a licence to deal in second-hand fishing and boating equipment.  There is no doubt that the level of proof via documentation is the most extensive that I have ever had to deal with for any application, and I feel “probed” (plus it took me two trips to get it right).

With the Police licence there is public advertising, Police checks, premises security, business plan examination, the requirement to send inventory records to Police, extensive ID requirements including witnessed photographs, periodic Police inspections and the thousands of dollars in fees.  No wonder there are very few such dealerships specifically for fishing and boating goods.

Then, there are the tax and reporting implications.  There is extensive GST law in relation to trading in second hand goods and it is a fairly complex reporting regime depending on the way in which you buy and sell the goods.  In essence there is a clear distinction between goods you buy outright and those which are taken on consignment, and this is dictated around the legal documentation that is agreed and signed.  Quite a little  “minefield” really.

My interest in this line of business is driven by:

  • People like fishing and boating equipment, and there are few outlets that sell second-hand which means you can’t generally buy used gear from a shop at a reasonable price.
  • When people buy goods, they like to see and feel the product and if they want it they can purchase it and take it home right away.
  • A lot of people couldn’t be bothered with all of the work it takes to advertise and sell goods through Gumtree, EBay, classifieds etc.  There are all the phone calls, “tyre kickers”, inspections by people you don’t know at your home, people that don’t show up as arranged, and the list goes on.

The service that we propose it to take, store, display and advertise your goods for retail sale on a consignment only basis.  We will rarely, if ever, buy direct from the public as this is not the intent.  If we did, the price will be low (half retail at best, plus deductions for age and condition) as we assume all of the risk and holding charges for this type of transaction.  We also cannot buy without all of the seller ID information, which has to be made available to Police.

On consignment, you will set the price.  There will be a commission and this % will depend on the overall value of the goods (stuff that is cheap still takes the same amount of work as stuff that is expensive so the % point will change based on $ value – I would be interested to hear what Members think is a reasonable percentage scale?).  For this, we will do the work, have the premises to securely hold and display the goods, have licences to legally allow the transaction, have relevant insurances, advertise to an agreed platform and do all the paperwork.  We will communicate with you through the process and pay as soon as the funds are received.

You would need to set a reasonable price.  There is no value to us in holding stock that is overpriced and will not sell in a reasonable time.  We will help you with price determination, but will return the goods to you in 12 weeks if they don’t sell given best endeavours.  If there are offers on your goods below the agreed selling price we will communicate this for your approval or otherwise.

You can choose the method of sale.  If you would like to auction the item, we will run an Ebay sale with the minimum price at your “bottom line” plus commission – if you get a better price at auction then that is a bonus but remember 10-15% is added to the transaction cost.  If you want your item sold at a fixed price we will advertise on the Shore Catch web site (newly received goods would be listed each fortnight and advised on FW), have the item for sale in the showroom (on a very busy road with good on-site parking), and put it on Gumtree.  We will deal with all postage and delivery issues if required, and this is at buyer’s expense.

All of the above will be set out in a legal document for execution prior to “handover” of the goods.  We will have an “approved” business premises for this purpose and the processes in place to ensure “legal” transactions.  We will not deal in stolen goods and all “selling” customers will be subject to required identification protocol, and the inventory record has to be provided to WA Police for verification.  The goods have to be held for at least 14 days before sale so if they are stolen, don’t try to sell them through us.  Our processes will detect illegal dealings and information will be passed on, if required.

We will only deal in fishing and boating related items.  We offer a service where you can consign your goods by attending our premises, filling in the required paperwork and receive payment at your nominated price when the goods are sold.  The whole process will be communicated and we are a legitimate business.

Have a look in your shed.  Surely there is gear that you don’t need but someone else would want, and you want a bit of extra cash (to buy some new gear).  The Police licence will issue in 4 weeks and our showroom will open in 6.  We therefore are seeking expressions of interest to assemble the initial inventory so please PM me if you would like to discuss “disposal” of some of your excess gear.  As long as it is fishing and boating related, we will be interested.

I really appreciate your support, and believe this may be a service that people want?

Mick

Perth Salmon

Hey all,

have been away for a few months and back home next week. Keen to get into some salmon and get a line in the water (seeing as the demersal ban is in). They still around some where? Anyone know where would be the most reliable chance in metro waters? Thinking mewstones but not sure! It's great that they appear to be hanging around for months the last few seasons. Cheers!

Boat Polish

wondering what you guys with glass boats use as polish and what you have found is good and crap

I polished one side of my Fury this morning with 3m Restorer and wax, and whilst it looks a little better it is patchy, and not the 'left un buffed polish on there' more like parts of it have come up shiny and small parts have come up like its got mist spray spots on it?

Whats everyones preferred Polish?

Gutted - Robbed

Went to pick the boat up this morning from Cockburn boat storage to get the 200 hour service done on the motor and with absolute dismay note the boat was visited overnight by some scum lowlifes. Stolen items include Furuno 295 sounder, Lowrance HDS12M with Platinum card, Engel 32 litre fridge freezer and Fusion sound system. The person/persons even took the transducers of the back of the boat, 2 x 2kw. I mean what can you say it just breaks your heart it really does destroy your faith in humanity

Any tips for king george whiting?

Never caught a KGW so have decided to target them during the ban. If you've got a moment can you let me know what size hooks are best, best bait, what size bait, what depths to fish in etc. - Mindarie is my closest marina but will go out of any of the 4 northern marinas if anybody wants to point me in the right direction cheers Dave

What are these?

We dragged our pots up today and found some of these in it. Looked like a group of baby crays, but had a single claw each. When we had a closer look out of water, it was cracking it's claw quite loudly. Sorry for the bad photo. Sloppy water out there today.

Installing a Furuno

stocking

can anyone give me some input on stocking perths lakes with sportfish of some description.most countries have a put and take type fishery.I am aware that the authorities are against introducing anything new.Any advice would be appreciated as I am interested in researching this subject

Latest Custom rod

Here's a fantastic 50lb Samurai Jig 8 rod recently built. The blank was 88 grams and at 6 feet long with that rating it's a gem. I cut this one down a few inches. Custom grips with a fancy Alloy reel seat and metal trim ring and the final rod weight still came up at only 266 grams.

Guides are Fuji Titanium K frames so a fair amount of money there alone. Gudebrod metallic threads (Silver metallic is Fishhawk). I'm loving the colours and very jealous I have to give this one to my mate.

Flathead Lures

Just bought my self a new Starlo & Stradic outfit. I'm very fortunate to live right on the beach in Silver Sands but do most of my fishing from my boat.  The new gear should inspire me to do a bit more beach fishing. Generally in summer there are plenty of tailor but mostly they are under or only just size. Amongst them are a few good size flat head. Up to now they've been an occasional by catch using bait but I would like to target them a bit more.

Lure fishing would be more fun but i dont have much of a clue what to use

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Knobs on the river

I was down the river today with the kids at sandy beach Bassendean and the amount of guys smashing past at 20 knots plus was unbelievable.  I think the 5 knot speed limit is nuts, but with kids in the water, maybe 10 knots would be suitable.  I reckon marine and safety could clean up parked up that end of the river.

seperatly, someone had left a full hand reel with a running sinker hooked to a tree which one of my boys got caught on, people need to clean up there rubbish.

Morning dive

Hit the water just after 7 this morning with perfect conditions. I think I have found jumbo city. Single tank dive saw both of us bagging out with ease. These were in 14m
