2 spots spare - reduced price - jigging and popping trip to Panama, August 2016

Panama is a place that's been on my list for a while now, primarily for the huge level of diversity that's available. Everyone knows about the Yellowfin Tuna there with plenty of specimens up to 100kg+ getting taken out on the Hannibal banks each year. But there's also awesome medium tackle surface fishing and jigging for Roosterfish, Cubera Snapper, Broomtail Grouper and Amberjack. In addition to that there's a host of other bluewater fish available like marlin, sailfish and wahoo. So it really has everything. I am putting together a specialised trip for next year and have some spaces available. This will be a 100% jigging and popping trip. The lodge that I am booking is situated in Pedasi, which has incredible fishing for many species but in particular for trophy size cubera snapper and roosterfish. Every year they take roosters over 100lb on popper at this lodge. The time of year I am going is late August into September. First fishing day is Monday 29 August. The base package is to fish 5 days, but there's the option to add extra days at the end (I will likely fish 6) but not everyone has to do the extra days. At this time of year, this lodge is normally shut for the rainy season. I have arranged for the lodge to re-open for this one week if I book the whole lodge (3 boats), simply because the tides are spot on and most importantly, this is the time of year when the biggest tuna and Roosters are likely to be present. It is important to note though that whilst Pedasi gets a lot less rain than the rest of Panama, it is still the rainy season so we will likely get some rain. But it will still be warm, and I've been advised that these months have the lowest wind - so it should not interrupt the fishing. The pricing is very reasonable. I've done a nice deal as will be booking the whole lodge, so much so that I'm not able to publish the price. If you are interested please drop me a message but to give you some idea, the cost for 6 nights accommodation, 5 days fishing and all your meals is roughly the same as a 5 day Monte Bellos charter. That price is based on fishing 3 to a boat, and doing 5 days fishing. If you want to fish 2 to a boat or do more than 5 days I can advise pricing. On top of that you need to add your flights to Panama City from wherever you are and airport transfers (3.5 hour drive) which work out around $100 a head. 40% deposit required to confirm the spot, balance payable 2 weeks before the trip. Cheers, Dan

TWO SPOTS NOW AVAILABLE

Two people have now had to pull out on this trip. Offering these two places at a loss now. Price for the charter is now less than a trip to the Monte Bellos (not including flights) so someone please get on this! If you need any incentive, check out this massive Rooster that was just caught there at the lodge recently. please PM for more info.

Squid in the Cockburn Sound

 Hi all,

Thisarvo me and a few mates are heading out from woodman point to target some squid.

We havnt tried before, so we are just going to try our luck out in the middle somewhere.

Is there any recommend depths to fish in for squid? And do you need to be over weed?

I have a few good jigs, but mainly just the cheap ones. One of them glows in the dark, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes getting on sundown.

When night hits, we were thinking of heading out a little deeper to target some bigger bottom fish. Are there many snapper around still? And if so how deep do you need to go to get them. We have a decent soundar, so that should help.

Any information is greatly appreciated! As I'm a bit of a novice.

Cheers guys!

Have a good day :)

left hand overhead reels

I'm on the market for an overhead LEFT HAND reel to troll for macks

I was told by a tackleshop the other day a lot of the Shimanos (trinidad & torium) which I fell in love with don't come in left hand models.

Any recommendations, model brand etc, and where to purchase the reel from (can pm me if its not site sponsored).

Would prefer to buy the reels from shop as I like to have a look and play with it before purchasing.

Thanks in advance!

Thunnus CI4 any good?

Hey guys, was looking to get a few of these for some bottom bashing work and some live baiting here and there.

are these reels any good??  How ldo they hold up after some abuse?

Had a play at the shop and felt like it should feel for its price range.

Will be using from the boat so anybody can chime in would be great

Tuna and Parasites

Got an SBT today, filleted it and was disappointed to find its flesh riddled with parasites. No sashimi for me.

After doing a search on here I emailed fisheries for a bit more information. See below the article they directed me to.

Parasites.

Myxozoans are commonly found parasites that infect both marine and freshwater fishes. They are found principally in the muscle, the brain and the gall bladder of their host fishes.

 Tuna infected with parasites

Fish filet with obvious white cysts, in this case a sign of infection with the parasite Kudoa.

Some species of myxozoans can cause death in fish. Non-lethal effects can include the production of small but obvious white cysts in the muscle that make fillets unsightly, unappetising and therefore unmarketable. Some species in the genus Kudoa produce enzymes after their host dies that cause muscle breakdown, making fillets soft and watery. This is known as post mortem muscle liquefaction. Stained histological section of fish muscle showing numerous Kudoa parasites.

These types of myxozoan infections pose significant challenges in commercial fisheries and are also of concern for aquaculture and Australia's biosecurity.

Mandurah boat storage help please

Hey Folks,

I am shifting from Tasmania to the Mandurah area real soon and hopeing for some advice on both short and medium term boat starage options. I will be landing there early December and hoping to find a rental property in the area that will accomodate my 6.7m barcrusher. I really dont want to leave her out on the street! However, from the internet searching I have done thus far this may proove difficult, so I would like to come over first and scout out the area before committing to a rental property over the internet.

Can any one please offer any suggestions on the following?

Option 1 - short term storage whilst I find a suitable rental.

Option 2 - In the event I fail to find a suitable rental then what are the best options for medium term storage...say 6 months??

Many thanks in advance, I have tried searching the net and found a few options but none stand out and time is against me as I am smack bang in the middle of packing for the move.... All advice will most appreciated..

Dan

Recreational skippers ticket query

just a quick one if I hold a recreational skippers ticket am I allowed to let somebody drive my boat when I am on board who doesn't hold one?

leave your radio on and log on

got towed in by an eagles supporter today[thank you sir], put the pots in no problems, headed back to o/reef at 4000rpm, bugger alarm and she cuts back to 2000rpm and sounding rough, carried on for awhile then asked the deckie to squeeze the fuel bulb and you could feel it recovering and then she was away, went not too far and the same thing happened, tried everything but it wouldn't start so called up VJ6LQ requesting a tow, we were only about a kay out dead calm,so they said they were getting a crew in when our friendly eagles supporter cruised up and offered a tow in.cancelled the tow from sea rescue and in we went, Mummm spent some time draining carbs etc, went on to the yammy spare tank, new plugs and seems like new, will test it tomorrow, big thanks to sea rescue and the guy who towed us in who heard the radio call and came to our assistance, crays for tea Friday we hope

A day on the cray

Back into it today, visited a couple of trusty old spots that produced as expected.

had a win with overnight / weekend parking for my car and trailer

I was concerned about leaving my Patrol and new boat trailer at the boat ramp overnight down Rockingham way so I made up flyers asking people if they would like to earn some easy money by having my car and trailer at their house while I'm away at Rottnest. Put them in peoples letter boxes whose houses I thought would have room and only one street back from the boat ramp and got a taker. Agreed on a good price and its on for this weekend. No more stressing that some lowlife is going to smash my windows or steal my trailer etc. Not conventional but hey, it worked. Lets just pray the homeowner doesn't like my tyres and rims more than me!!!!!!!!

guns

for those guys that own firearms on here can you please tell me what is the minimum size property that you as a land owner are allowed to discharge your weapon on?

If you have a 2-3acre property with neighbours right next to you can you legally discharge your weapon on that property?

Me thinks no but I would like to know from those guys who would know more about this. Tks tangles

Ill mention more about why when I get some responses. Tks guys

EDIT. THREAD CLOSED AT TANGLES REQUEST.

Wind Advice

 Hey guys

First time poster got a quick question thinking of going for a flick in Rockingham either tonight or in the morning. Weather forecast is for a south westerly wind tonight and an Easterly in the morning, in your experiences which would be the better time to go have a crack?

Cheers!

Abalone rules

I would apprecaite it if anyone can advise re: abalone rules.

Intend to go out in season to our non-sanctuary spot at Rotto to get our crays and also snorkel for abs on the legal days between 0700 and 0800

Do I then have to return home before 0800 and drop of the abs and then go back out in the boat or is it OK to leave the abs on board (unshucked of course) and come in later

I have called Fisheries who are unsure

Anyone with experience in this I would appreciate your advice

I don't want any hassle from fisheries with the kids in the boat

If its too hard I'll just leave the abs alone

Regards

Coral bay - next year

booked into coral bay end of March next year.

"was" keen to try it after several years off Exmouth.

I managed to shoot up here this week for a couple of days snorkelling and will maybe catch a charter...

I've been speaking to lots of guys with boats and all have the same opinion in that it's very hard work to catch a decent fish without heading out 20 plus miles....and even then most are really struggling.

with this im pretty concerned that I should go to Exmouth again instead next year.:.but I've already done my dough on accommodation so coral bay it is?

Any thoughts/comments/advice?

also, which is best and safest for people inexperienced in coral bay waters - south or north passage?

Cleaning Iron Bore Water Stains Off Fibreglass Hull

Just thought i'd let everyone know Starbrite Hull Cleaner worked a treat getting some iron stains off the gel coat of my hull - which had baked on due to heading south with work for a fortnight after wash down. Don't normally plug products, however, was dubious it would work, and it came good! Left it on for ~5 minutes (wouldnt leave any longer - uses oxalic acid) - did three rounds of this (washing off between). Then proceeded to wash/wax and re-polish the gel coat....... Wont be making that error again!

Throwing the book at them
