KGW Hooks Size

I had a look through the FAQ regarding the new rules and paternoster rigs and found the following:

“Can I use a maximum of three hooks when fishing for non-demersal species?
Yes, a maximum of three baits or lures per line is permitted when fishing for non-demersal species such as King George Whiting. If a demersal scalefish is caught using more than one bait or lure as by-catch, it is strongly recommended to change your rig to avoid catching more.”

From what I am reading we can still drop a paternoster rig down in our spots in the 30-40m depths. The question is, what size hooks are everyone using when chasing KGW out wide? Personally I prefer a 6/0 or a 7/0 max. Still small enough to hook up a KGW and big enough to avoid being plagued by wrasse…

spoke with fisheries

Had a yarn to fisheries to find out about the number of hooks you can use on one bait. They said that ganged hooks on a mullie would be deemed as a lure and would be exceptable for use. As of now there have been now gazzeted changes to the rules. that means that the laws have not been passed into law but the demesal extention will go ahead as planned. They were as confused and disappointed with some of the changes as we are i suppose. So things are still up in the air. i asked about school holiday end dates and they were a bit miffed at the lack of actual dates and whether it was going to be the public school holidays or private ones as some finish later than others.

All in all a cock up for sure.

Marron trip

Spent four nights camped in the depths of the bush to secure these beauties. David Attenborough could of made a documentary on the critters around truly wild bush. Good to push your limits every now and then. Was a bit worried when I got up for a piss at one thirty in the morning and saw lightning. Was stressing out it might cause a bushfire in our area and then it would of been game on to get out . All in all it's a tough trip but the rewards are worth it. The oldies love 'em.

SS Prop Rattle

Since I popped on my stainless steel prop I have been getting a horrible rattling sound when I have the engine only just in gear in forward and reverse. If I give it a slight rev it goes away and can sometime go away whilst in gear and she drives fine otherwise. I’ve stuck the muffs on it in the driveway and it doesn’t make the rattling sound in forward or reverse so appears to only happen in the water. I’ve contact my mechanic as I thought I may have installed it incorrectly but he’s said that is fine it is just the weight difference between aluminium and stainless steel and not much can be done about it.

I’ve also been in touch with Mick who said it’s a common issue with Suzukis and suggests that increasing my idle by 15 PM should fix the issue.

Has anyone else fixed this issue by increasing their idle RPM or was it then too fast in gear in idle when docking etc?

Cheers JF

Fishing Exmouth advice

We are heading to Osprey Bay in July,we were thinking of taking our 5.5m aluminium and launching from Tandabiddi....never been up there, what's the passage  out like and what's it like fishing inside the reef?

Few fish from in close

Few from the last few trips in the shallows on a couple of isolated little lumps  , good fun on the plastics , metals and soft vibes

Greenhead in a tinnie

G'Day all,

I'm heading up to Greenhead soon, I'm chasing some advice for inshore fishing. I have a 12ft tinnie and will have young kids with me so I'm not keen on heading out anymore than a couple of kms.   What depths can I expect within a couple of kms out?

Any suggestions for spots / areas to try? Even something for bread and butter species so the kids can get onto something.

Does anybody get onto squid up there?

Grease gun couplers

Hi. Doing most of my trailer servicing and one of the things I find frustrating is getting a grease gun coupling to fasten on and hold on to the zerk fitting. Now considering a quick release coupler and have looked at the locknlube and the alemlube A14512. Has anyone had experience with either of these and anmy recommendation. Thanks - Eric

Went out yesterday, no wind no drift, no fish, no crays and a 3 meter bronzy cruising around the boat at the back of the FF. Still better than mowing the lawn.

Tinnie Fishing

 Hey all,

Ive just started an instagram page for all things fishing, squidding, crabbing etc if anyones interested in following. Mainly fish the south west reqion in my stessco 460 catcher with 50hp yammie. Plan is to target mainly KG's, crabs and squid and get out and nail a few demersals when the weather allows. Not trying to sell or push anything, more just results from whats possible from our waterways in a tinnie. Anyway, check out and follow voodoo_daze_fishing if your keen.

Cheers

Tinny bow rail fabricator recommendations

 Hi all

Semi-recently got my hands on a 420 Wide Body Dory and after a few trips out have thought about some mods. First one is to get a small bow rail/anchor roller set-up on her. The front currently just has the two handles at the point of the bow and want to get something like this done to it, including the little plates for mounting nav lights and an anchor cleat. Possibly even a rear step on the transom.

Just looking for any recommendations on where to get the work done. Not too sure if many boat builders are bothering with this little stuff at the moment.

Cheers

Steve

Impeller help needed

Sorted thank you.

Thursday Preston Run

Headed down to Preston Thursday in the reefy for a Dhu bash to some ground that has produced some good fish. Unfortunately, despite the sounder looking the goods the fish were completely shut down. Managed to scrape together a bag on a quiet day with the highlight being my biggest KG, measured 56cm and a whisker short of 4lb,

Mercury Trim Tilt

The tilt/trim isn’t working and the motor was removed. This looks like the original motor. Are there rebuild kits for these in Australia. Or am I better off buying a newer 12V motor. Thanks.

Motor is a Mariner 60hp 2 stroke. Unsure of age of the motor

Thursdays Trip

went out last thursday for the second time this season and managed a feed. the Dhuie was caught by my son on a vex head and so was teh swallow tail. the two pinkies were caught on the paternoster rig. pinkies were thick in several spots. lots of undersize ones about.

Live bait

Happy New year and tight lines for 2023 to everyone!

Anyone got any good areas for livebait NOR preferably? Looking to use for pelagics so whats the best to use? I'll be trying to keep overnight so not looking in the morning for them if possible, cheers.

I have heard of inflation but….

Absolutely crappy octopus now selling at $35 a kilo .....imported, bloody massive single tentacle which I assume come from a pacific occy. I questioned the tackle store and they told me ALL bait jumping dollars each week from their suppliers.
