Thought I'd post a few photos. The wife doesn't really appreciate the sense of anticipation, self reliance, man vs. elements.
She does have other redeeming qualities, of course - not to mention she caught a double header of 45cm flatties, to my single herring, Down South a few months ago. Fed us for 2 nights :-|

End of the World ?
Submitted by fish4dan on Fri, 2012-12-07 20:35The demersal ban ends on 15 Dec. And supposedly the World ends on 21 Dec. I'm thinking of taking that week off to have a last taste of dhuie on the BBQ :-) Does anyone know if we can catch demersals on the 15th, or does it really mean from 12.01am on 16th Dec ? Cheers, Dan

Fish that repels sharks.
Submitted by damon4949 on Thu, 2012-12-06 18:01So I'll write out the cliffs for the docco just incase anyones too lazy to read it ;).
Basically a research team studied the Hagfish that releases a protein around it that makes the water near it turn into a gooey substance, this substance smells like "Dirty sea water" and has been proven to repel sharks.
The same fish's slime is made up of tiny fibres about 100 times smaller than human hair, that could make clothes stronger than nylon or plastic and would be more efficient than harvesting silk worms.
Still don't think I'd be putting a slime all over me that has a "consistency similar to snot" to repel the biteys haha.
Article: http://news.discovery.com/tech/hagfish-slime-super-clothes-121203.html
Worth a read and certainly interesting.
Apologies if it has been posted before, I've done a few searches and couldn't find anything.

New sounder for the tinny...
Submitted by Braxi on Thu, 2012-12-06 15:13G'day,
i am in the hunt for a new sounder/plotter for my tinny. I am looking at the HDS 7 which should do the job. But I noticed today the
Furuno GP1670F Colour GPS Plotter Fishfinder
Has anyone used this and is it a better unit than the Lowrance? It's a bit pricier by a couple hundred $$$. Not too sure if its worth the extra. Any info would be great. Also, where do you guys get you electronic from. There's some good prices online but I'd rather buy locally, at least from somewhere in oz.

Dead crabs safetybay
Submitted by CURT on Wed, 2012-12-05 23:53Hi all.
I went down to the bent st boat ramp tonight to shine the torch for cobbler and there was a number of crabs washed up. Mostly small males. Would have been close to ten dead crabs for every ten metres of beach. This was the turn island side of the ramp towards that PIpe on the beach. I think this is storm water from the roads possibly polluting the water here? Pretty shit if u ask me

What's the strangest method you've used to catch a fish?
Submitted by NickJetpilot1 on Wed, 2012-12-05 22:48Having just finished year 12 my two mates and i decided to go up to kalbarri for a week for leavers to do some relaxing and fishing. Anyway, on our second last night we were talking to this couple who were fishing on the jetty with us, we had rods and bait, they had rods and crab pots. We weren't catching anything other thatn small bream and tarwhine, and they weren't catching anything at all, then just as we were about to leave, they pull up their crab pots. Heard the dude start shouting and laughing, so we turn around to see what's up, and there sitting in his crab pot is an absolute monster estuary cod. Clearly not the biggest they grow but for the murchison this thing was an absolute monster, probably about 1m long and about 10kg.
That was the first weird catch of the trip, but wasn't the last. The next night we went back to the jetty for a fish, didn't bring the bait or rods, instead a gidgee. My mate wanted to catch these little angel fish to bring back for his little bro's aquarium, so he makes an improvised net/bucket out of an ice-cream bucket and rope. He dropped it down with a lot of rocks in it for weight and a squid we got from the couple that were there again. After about 10 minutes he decides to pull it up and lo and behold, no angel fish, but a big f****** mud crab. We had no use for it so we gave it to the other guy in return for the bait.
So after these weird, improvised and very unorthodox methods of catching fish i was curious to know, what the strangest method you guys have ever used to catch fish???

Reel choice
Submitted by Hambo on Wed, 2012-12-05 15:31Hey Guys,
Just got a new Shimano Terez 6'9" spin Medium/Heavy (Fast) rod from the mrs for an early xmas present. Looking at using it for an all round rod for Bottom Bouncing, Soft Plastics and some light jigging as well. After some advice on what reel would balance out nicely with it. The rod is rated for 30-50lb power pro. Have a few reels in mind, dont want to spend a fortune for a stella 5000 (as much as id like to) so was looking at possibly a Saragosa 8000F or possibly a Shimano Stradic 6000 or 8000FJ. Whats your advice out there?

Squidding in the Sound
Submitted by joel88 on Wed, 2012-12-05 14:35Hey Guys,
My mates and I were looking at having a go squidding in the Cockburn Sound this Saturday (weather permitting) but we have never been out there so were wondering if anyone had any advice? We will launch from Woodmans point and then hopefully have some luck fairly close to shore. From what I've seen on seabreeze winds are meant to be 10 - 15 knots in the morning and swell 3 meters. Does that sound ok for the sound?
We only have a small boat so don't want to venture off shore too far but hoping you guys could suggest some good spots. Also are there any reefs or anything we need to look out for so we don't hit them?
And is it worth taking the rods out and trying to catch anything (of course not Snapper) or is there nothing really there until you go out deeper?
Thanks

HELP!! New camera wanted!!
Submitted by KeenAsFisho on Wed, 2012-12-05 06:34G'day All,
I know this ain't fishing quality (well it could be on a technicality i suppose) but the mrs and I are going to be having a baby next year. So for xmas I want to get her a good quality camera and camcorder. Basically what I want to know is can anyone recommend a good quality digital SLR for under 500 bucks?
Has anyone got one they like and would recommend getting? I am pretty cluey with the camcorder side so I will be able to find one of those but the camera side I am useless!!
Has to be a pretty good quality one (I realize I am a bit restricted at 500) but I also will take it on the boat (aha yes it IS a fishing topic lol) so want one that will handle that alrite.
Cheers all!

A cowboy operation!!! Charged a shit load for shipping then when the item turned up after well over 2 weeks the postage paid stamp on the parcel was a quater of the price paid and was for the cheapest option! The handling and packing does not cost that much we can all use the post office calc right? When I tried to contact them by phone email many many times still no reply.... Not impressed will never use them again, you have been warned.

Boat trailer guide on's & side posts
Submitted by West coast pom on Tue, 2012-12-04 13:19Hi all,
Not specifically a fishing question, but it impacts my ability to go fishing on my own!!
Anyone know where to get those vertical guide posts that bolt onto the rear frame of a boat trailer (to help straighten the boat when retrieving on my own). I have found loads of suppliers in the US, but can't seem to find any in Perth or in Oz for that matter.
Anyone know a supplier/ where i can get them in WA?
Uploaded a picture off the net to help.
Cheers
James.
