!!TODAYS BASH FROM OCEAN REEF!!

first and foremost, a big thankyou to the person who pointed us in the right direction, its only the second time we have fished out from o/r, not knowing where to go.

you know who you are!!!!THANKYOU!!!!Cool

i took my old man out for a bash today, even if he was a bit worried about heading out deep.  it didnt last long because on his first drop he pulled in an under size pinky, back he went and down goes dad again.  bang another pinky, little bit bigger but still under.

move back for another drift and the old boy is on again, this time a size queeny (smaller 1 in pic) he is wrapped.  at this stage i still got f/all.

back for another drift and its my turn with the big queeny (guess who is jealous now).  but then dad pulls up his size pinky.  a few more shit fish in between drifts, so we decide to move on abit further

my turn for a under size pinky, while the old boy is getting the leather jackets.  i tell dad to throw them back cause there f**n ugly, no way he disputes.   another drift and  i come up with an under dhu, he was not happy about going back down on the release weight,  3 times lowering him into the drink he thinks he can swim faster than my weight and pulls himself off, 3 times we pick him back up, in the end safely returned to the deep.

all in all was a good day for us on new ground/location with a memorable trip for myself and my old boy in the pic holding his catch.

cheers ron

p.s not sure why the pics are so small, click on them to enlarge.

Swell - how does it affect landbased fishing?

Hi folks,

Just wandering if anyone can explain how swell is likely to affect landbased fishing for species such as tailor and mulloway. Obviously the conditions will change dramatically - but how does this impact whether the fish are on the bite?

Would the stirred up conditions also stir the fish into action as there would be more food on the move and potentially more opportunities to hide and sneak up on prey?

Heading up to Leeman for the week and noticed a huge 5.8m swell forecast for Wednesday (new moon), with the swell being up all week. Tuesday is looking very good for a tailor bash!

Cheers,

Buschy

Anyone know what this is under the water?

I noticed this from an aerial photo and was wondering what the cirles are in the water just out from naval base/alcoa refinery in the cockburn sound, perth?? Is it a natural reef, manmade or just weed?

Reusing Terminal Tackle / Retying knots

Just wondering what other peoples thoughts are on reusing swivels or hooks trip after trip. I'm always skeptical about reusing swivels when they have any of that white/green corrosion on them, would that actually weaken them much? Obviously heavy corrosion would but where do you draw the line and just throw it out and use a new one? And how rusty does a hook have to be for you to change it to a new one? In particular on lures.

Also do you retie all your knots (bimini's etc) before each trip or just use them till they snap?

Personally in general if in any doubt I'll chuck it out and use new gear or retie, I'd hate to loose a good fish due to being stingey.

fishing time

just wandering if the fishing in and around perth is gonna start gettin better now since it is spring? and where would i go at the moment to catch some decent fish? i dont have a boat.

cheers

poss cuts to herring and tailor bag limits

from the west australian

Tighter bag limits for recreational anglers on popular fish species herring and tailor could be introduced after a Government study has questioned whether fishing on current stocks is sustainable. Stocks are lower than 20 years ago, with preliminary findings from a Department of Fisheries' report - to be released in November - showing that recreational fishers are putting more pressure on herring numbers than the commercial industry. The research also found that environmental factors have likely contributed to the decline. WA's last influx of herring was in 1999 at the same time as a strong Leeuwin current. And major pilchard kills along the WA coastline in 1995 and 1998 - attributed to a herpes virus - is suspected to have driven predators to feast on herring. Senior research scientist Dr Kim Smith said the research had yet to determine whether the level of fishing enjoyed in the metropolitan area was sustainable. Dr Smith said commercial fishing pressure on herring was low, but recreational fishing pressure was still significant and "something of a concern". Recreational fishermen are allowed a bag limit of eight tailor per day, with a minimum size of 300mm and only two exceeding 600mm, while they can catch herring in a 30 mixed-bag limit. Scientist Brett Molony said the research followed on from the introduction of tough rules for catching demersal species such as pink snapper and dhufish which had been expected to increase demand for near-shore species. The study, which is also trying to establish mortality rates of the fish from catch sizes, biological data and historical records dating back to the 1970s, will soon turn its focus on whiting. Much of the information has been volunteered by recreational fishermen, including diaries that recorded fishing activity from the same locations for 40 years. It has revealed that between 70 and 80 per cent of herring caught during the spawning season were female, a quota Dr Smith said was unusual and unsustainable. She said tailor stocks were "not where we'd like them to be" but the health of the stock had improved in recent times. Researchers had struggled to get the required sample size to determine the age structure of the population. "We've found over the years there's extremely variable recruitment, it was strong in the late 90s and then nothing, but the last couple of years have been quite good," Dr Smith said. Recfishwest acting chief executive Kane Moyle said that herring and tailor were the lifeblood of the recreational fishing industry and the stock management needed to be discussed once the study was complete.

Instructions how to resize pictures.

As I’ve noticed, some people are having troubles resizing their pictures. Pictures uploaded straight from the camera will not fit on screen!!  There is an easy way to do it without any graphic program on your pc. Go on this side http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ scroll down a bit, click browse and select your picture. Then change the settings as below (seems to get the result just right for this forum) click resize and after few moments the resized picture appears on the screen. Click right mouse button on the picture, “Save picture as” and save it to your pc. Then upload it on fishwrecked as you would normally. Hope this will help.

Wheely jig?

Did a bit of shopping in Cash & Carry today (where I picked up a 4ft gaff for $15...will probably break when I'm landing a big one...but at that price...gotta be worth a look) - and in Big W.

I picked up a Tataki squid jig that I liked the look of. At $8 it was worth a go. It has screw in weights - which kind of look like small wheels.

The mrs, not being a fisho as such herself asked me how it works then after looking at it answered the question herself

"So you just roll it around in the sand on it's wheels?"

As you can imagine, I p*ssed myself laughing.

Where to go fishing in November?

Hi guys & gals,

With leave passes issued (sort of) - Simmo Ryan and I can now turn our minds to planning a landbased adventure somewhere far, far north of here. Where do you all think we should go for 3-5 nights?

- We will be strictly landbased.

- Simmo wants to catch a queenie, I want myself a big LB mack.

- We will only have one vehicle and will be towing a trailer, so miles and miles of soft sand might be out of the question.

- Will be fishing late November, after the full moon.

We typically enjoy beach fishing and a bit of rock fishing. Anywhere between Kalbarri and Exmouth is fair game...maybe Steep Point, Monkey Mia, Quobba, Exmouth and anywhere in between.

Where would you go, and why? Also considering conditions at that time of year.

Thanks for your help.

For All You Fathers on fathers Day ( Which I Know Would Never Do this *LOL*)

Recived this in our email today thought i would share it with you all:

(READ THE BLURB BEFORE LOOKING AT THE PICTURES)

What a wonderful father!

You may be forgiven for thinking that any man would look proud after
catching a large barracuda as he poses with the fish and his 14 year-old
daughter at the marina afterwards.

Then you may wonder why his daughter looks less than thrilled.

14 year old Coral Wira was sitting in a boat while her father fished.
Suddenly she saw a silver flash in the air. The barracuda had thrown the
hook and grabbed her arm.

Father managed to kill the fish with a knife in the head.

But Coral, needed 51 stitches.

And he felt the need to pose for photos before taking her to hospital!

All i can say is OUCH

looking for glare proof coating for a screen

I'm looking for a film or coating that reduces glare on screens. I have a touch screen monitor, but it has poor vis in bright light. Was wondering if there is any film or coating I could apply to improve the visibility of the screen in sunlight?

I know "ViewGuard® Anti-Glare Frameless Privacy Filters & Screen Protectors " do work, but at $150 for a piece big enough for my 21inch monitor thats a little ruff on the pocket!!!

cheers
