"shark eating man"

As taken from todays Age Newspaper

"Jane Holroyd
February 16, 2007 - 12:41PM

A South Australian man who wrestled and killed a 1.3-metre shark earlier this week has been described as a "risk taker" by his wife.

Phillip Kerkhof, 41, jumped into shallow waters to chase the bronze whaler shark because it was eating bait that he and other fisherman were using off a jetty near Port Lincoln.

His wife Christine said Phillip, a bricklayer, had nine lives.

"Just after we got married he fell off a 100-foot weir and did not even go to hospital," she told theage.com.au.

Mrs Kerkhof said she was at home on Monday when her husband arrived at their Louth Bay home with the shark.

"When he brought it home he called, 'Come out here! Come outside!' I walked outside and there's a shark on the lawn. I just shook my head because I'm used to my husband doing crazy things."

Mr Kerkhof wrestled the shark after capturing it in his arms and managed to fling it up onto the jetty before killing it.

"He didn't think," Mrs Kerkhof said. "He'd had a few vodkas and wasn't thinking straight. He just does things off impulse. He thought about it later and said, 'That was a bit dangerous.'"

Mrs Kerkhof said her husband had been a diver on a tuna boat before retiring to take up bricklaying 10 years ago.

She said the shark would not go to waste.

"I cooked some of it up the night after," Mrs Kerkhof said. "It was beautiful. Really tender."

"There's a few people around here who wouldn't mind trying it so it'll go pretty quick."

Well you just have to wonder!!!

B'Day Pressies

Got Birthday pressies tonight...

A Shimano Spheros 6000FA spooled with 30lb Cajun Braid. (Watch out metro offshore tailor)

A diamond steel to keep my filleting knives sharp.

A new Rapala electronic scale 25kg (The boga grips scales are stuffed now)

and a book on the life of David Beckham (believe it or not he used to play for spurs.)

Plus an assortment of other goodies.

Not a bad haul for an old coot.

Just need some thoughts on what rod to match it to if I want to cast poppers and small metal lures at metro offshore tailor.

Richter jellybeans

A while ago Adam put up some samples of these and i suggested that a friend of mine had been using them for a while with great success. I have since been trying to get some and none of the shops are stocking them. I cant get hold of my mate but im thinking he has got something else thats simular. Must be close but have these been released yet? I apologise about the false info if they havent. I will try a see what he is actually using. Adam are they around yet?

Dhufish Frames Required - Urgently

Ian Keays from the Fisheries Research Department urgently requires more dhufish frames. His number is 9203 0206 or you can ring the Hillarys Research Centre and ask for him.

Frozen frames are ok and it would be great if they were whole. All that is required is the date caught, depth and an approximate location.

Please help out if you can!

Windfinder

Has anybody used this site for their wind and wave forecasts.

windfinder.com

You can check the forecasts for heaps of spots even overseas. Will have to see how acurate it is compared to seabreeze and BOM.

Exmouth 07

Just wondering who's heading up to Exmouth this year and when? I know of a few who are, but thought I may as well start a thread and see. Surely there must be a few gamex contenders about?

Crikey

This was snipped from a newsletter that I belong to Cranbourne fishing

TORTOISE HEAD
Be careful when you wash your hands over the side of the boat in Western Port. Regular customer Dave Stevens was fishing off Tortoise Head this week when a six meter (approx) great white shark popped up to say hello. Nice!

Makes me not want to wash my hands overboard

Perth Wind Forecast - 3/4th Feb

Saturday: S/SE winds 13/18 knots briefly tending E/NE 10/15 knots during the morning. Winds tending S/SW 15/20 knots near noon then increasing to 20/30 knots during the afternoon. Seas 1.0m rising to 2.0m in the afternoon. Swell rising to 2.5m.

Sunday: S/SW winds 20/30 knots strengthening to S/SW 25/33 knots in the afternoon.

A very strange forecast for Saturday from BOM, south/southeast then tending north/north east at almost the same rate briefly??? Not sure how much I believe that!!! Just checking seabreeze it doesn't look to special for offshore fishing either. It might be a good time to head down and get some crabs from Mandurah or do some landbased fishing for breamskis, tailor/mulloway.

Good luck if you get to wet a line this weekend!

Cheers,
Adam

Seaweek Expo

Annual Seaweek Expo on show for South West educators

The Department of Fisheries annual Seaweek Educators’ Expo, one of the many events in a national celebration of the marine environment in March, will head for regional areas of WA for the first time.

Community Education Officer Michelle Dyer said expos would be held in Bunbury and Albany as well as Hillarys this year.

“The Seaweek Educators’ Expo has become very popular over recent years. The 2007 theme is ‘Marine Bycatch Matters’ and the programs at all three venues will include a range of activities covering various aspects of marine education,” Ms Dyer said.

“We will have information on how teachers can develop interesting marine studies for their classes and the regional expos interactive program will be designed to attract the interest of educators in the South West and the Great Southern.

“At Hillarys educators can submerse themselves in snorkelling, boating and fishing, get up close to marine creatures in a touch pool or get their hands dirty in a fish dissection, see science in action and be amongst the first to experience our new exhibition hall at the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre.”

Ms Dyer said primary and secondary teachers and environmental educators would have a valuable learning and professional development opportunity through the variety and inspiration in this year’s expo programs.

“The knowledge teachers and other educators take back to their classrooms from our expos will be valuable for future generations to understand the need to manage marine resources in a sustainable way to preserve and protect our environment,” she said.

“We will also show educators innovative technologies to reduce bycatch and highlight what research and new technologies are being incorporated into both professional and recreational fishing practices.”

The Seaweek Educators' Expos will be held at:
Hillarys Boat Harbour – Friday 2 March 2007 – Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre.
Albany – Tuesday 6 March 2007 – Camp Quaranup.
Bunbury – Friday 9 March 2007 – Koombana Bay Sailing Club.

More details about the Seaweek Educators’ Expo are available on the Department of Fisheries website at www.fish.wa.gov.au. Click on the expo icon on the home page.

Oceanside purchase

Hi boys just a quick note to say that i went down to oceanside to meet ryan and Honsu on the weekend and was pretty impressed with the service and presentation of the whole shop. I trully believe that the smaller the shop, the better range of gear can be brought. If it aint in there it aint worth buying! Also means that greater service can be acheived to the customer as well, which i also recieved! The prices were sensational and ryan is keen to have happy clients as well giving them all the expertease they require to get them onto great fish. So if you are not happy with your current supplier or even if you are, take the extra time to check it out anyway i think you might be impressed. I purchased one of the new range of Rapala braid concept jigging sticks teamed up with a saltist 30T and diawa accu braid which im very happy with and cant wait to give it a good testing out soon. Even check out the range of oceansides jigmaster rods as well, they are custom made rods exlusive to oceanside are they impressed the hell out of me! I will be defently getting one as soon as the wallet allows it. Many of you proberly know of these guys and may even shop there but if you live north of the river like i do ill be more than happy to pick anything up for you as im defently going there in the future. Cheers guys and if your new to the site and head down there tell em SPESS sent you and im sure youll be amazed with what i beleive is the best attrubute to any fisherman, SERVICE!
