Buying a radio overseas
Submitted by Mikado on Tue, 2012-12-18 09:43Hi guys. As the tital states.Im after a Standard Horizon branded radio and after info or feedback on others who may have bought from the US. The radios over there seem to be almost half price.
Another VHF/UHF question I have is this license rule. I know it has been said before but after a couple of much older searches on here I still can't find the final answer. Do I need this license which I'm happy to sort out. And is the reception etc that much better with VHF. I'm almost finished a centre console build and will be based in the Pilbirra and Broome hence this question.
Thanks in advance.
On another note. I'm surprised that this forum doesn't have a dedicated Radio/Communication topics page? Or at least I couldn't find one.

help help computor geek advise sought
Submitted by meglodon on Mon, 2012-12-17 13:49Hi Guys & girls
can anyone please help me? I'v just brought a second hand computor from an auction house and it came with a C.O.A. for "Vista". i was told that all i had to do was take it home and load my copy of windows xp profesional on and all would be danddy put the disk in the slot and away you go said the man Hmmm. not quite
my problem is this, put the orig xp disk in computor makes all the right sounds shows via on screen messages all the files it is loading up all seem ok then message comes up "starting windows". then the fun starts, blue screen comes up with the following message.
"a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computor.
If this is the first time your've seen this stop error screen restart your computor. If this screen appears again follow these steps.
Check for viruses on your computor, remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.
Check your hard drive to make sureit is properly configured and terminated. Run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive corruptionand then restart your computor
has anyone had this sort of problem and if so do i need to go to a computor geek or what my knowledge of computors is i know how to turn them on put a disk in the drive and press run, any advise most appreciated

Boating Rant
Submitted by Noxious on Mon, 2012-12-17 08:20G'day
Had an absolute nightmare down at the river yesterday. Since getting my boat, I haven't done any landbased fishing at all. Yesterday I had a family do, at an uncles place who only lives around the corner from my favourite flathead spot. So I decided this was a good opportunity to hit the flats for an hour or so.
Waded out about 30meters from the shore. Fishing was pretty slow, managed a couple small flatties and the usual couple of blowies. Then I was on, two huge stinking runs (saw my backing on one), and about 20 minutes back and forth I finally had this fish beat. Until I noticed a boat heading straight for me (mind you I'm only in about 2-3feet of water), I was yelling at the top of my voice to tell this boat to go around me, the dude driving the boat looked straight at me and continued course and passed me by about 3 meters, bang I was cut off!!! I let him know I wasn't happy. All I got was abuse from his mrs.
I was also abused and yelled at by two seperate boats full of p1ssed d1ckheads! What is with people? they get on a boat and leave their brains on the jetty.
I'm a big boy, I can take a bit of abuse, I just laugh. One day I wouldn't mind being a father, I would hate for young children to be subjected to the pathetic behaviour I witnessed yesterday. People hassling and 'picking on' a lone fisherman minding his own business.
Seems everyone is a hero when they are on a boat and the other person is standing in the water.
Was pretty upset about the fish too. Whatever it was, it was going to be a nice fish. Was certainly no flathead.
That's me done.

Range Rover Sport
Submitted by AaronC on Sun, 2012-12-16 20:29Hey fellow fisho's,
Looking at buying my wife a bigger 4wd and she likes the RR sport (expensive taste). The budget is around 50K. Which puts us in the 2005-2008 price bracket. Only looking at the TDV6 and took one for a drive on the weekend. Nice car but what are they really like? We have a 1.5 tonne boat so towing should be very economical??
If anyone on the site has one i would really like a opinion from someone who is not trying to flog me one. What are the average service costs? Parts expensive? fuel economy?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Good start to the Season
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2012-12-16 16:07Had a great day out today. First day of the demersal season. 4 crays on the way out (7 day pull) & a beautiful 77 cm Dhuie. A lovely light west wind to stir up the fish. Its nearly always a good day for fishing at Mandurah when the witch of the west comes stealin.
Now I know there are plenty of guys on this site who catch dhuies regularly. But for me it's a rare prize. 2 or 3 a year.

cray pots in exmouth
Submitted by leesfishin on Sun, 2012-12-16 14:14hi all,
heading up to exmouth over xmas an wondering if its worth taking the cray pots up there.
i see there are reds there, not sure if in numbers and if many people catch them in pots up there.
any suggestions or lickley areas to try would be great .
i also see on fishers no pots aloud around the murions islands , are there any more no pot ares (exept sancurary zones)
or is it a waist of time and leave the pots at home (could fit a few more ctns beer in there space lol )
cheers lee

Metro Fishing
Submitted by Hollow Bar on Sun, 2012-12-16 12:57Hi Guys,
Im fresh to this forum and noticed there wasnt a thread for general chit chat catching in the metro perth area? If there is one and i've overlooked it please link me to it but I think it would be nice to have a running thread with how the Perth beach and river are fishing.
Im heading out for a flick off the Point walter flats and can hopefully update this thread in hopes that its a constant source of where and what species is fishing well.
Cheers

CHIRP - is it better than an FCV 295
Submitted by JohnF on Sun, 2012-12-16 08:31Will be installing new electronics on the new tug once it arrives, and the difficult choice of sounder is the issue.....
The boat has a Garmin 740S GPS/sounder/radar touchscreen combo, which I will probably use for a backup, but nowhere near big or good enough as the main unit.
I have always used Raymarine, so was leaning to the new E125 with the 450 CHIRP module and M265LH CHIRP tranny. But I am just not sure if I will be paying top dollar for s gimmick, when I could put in an old skool FCV 295 and conventional 1 or 2 kW tranny and know it would be great.
I love the Raymarine ease of use, and find the Furuno stuff a bit clunky, but no doubt Furuno have had the best Sounders up until now.
What about the Simrad NSS 12? Looks pretty good. Anyone used these with conventional and/or CHIRP?
On trannies, also considering through hull B175's, as I am still unsure if I can shoot through the Boston whaler conquest 235 hull with the M265 tranny effectively. They have a specific transducer area moulded into the hull with no foam, but I have read on the hull truth that it is thick and design for through hull (drill a hole jobbies), not shoot through....... But the new chirp shoot throughs are meant to be much less affected than the old M260 shoot through......
So many options........
Not gonna be cheap!

Broken Down rigger advise
Submitted by eltaco on Sat, 2012-12-15 00:39Hi guys ran into a bit of a problem on the weekend , well a cray pot to tell the truth .I was trollin round rottness for a mack or tuna and had the down rigger ( canon digi troll 10 ) at about 10m deep and hit a cray pot rope which caused the down rigger to peel out wire so we stopped reversed up and i started to bring the down rigger up and it sounded under load but not struggling to much then all of a sudden it completely shut off nothing on the screen no power at all so i had to hand pull up the last few metres . Just wondering if anyone knows if they have a overload fuse or something that would cause this because im heading to kalbarri in a week and would love not to send it away for repairs any info would be much appreciated as i cant find my manual . (ps the cray pots the pros where dropping where in about 20m deep with about 40m of rope preety annoying )
