Thanks Oceanside
Submitted by r.gates on Sun, 2012-12-23 22:10Hi all
During my trip to Darwin in July, my brother-in-law struck some trouble with one of his reels, a Penn eggbeater. After making some enquires, I ended up ringing Oceanside to enquire about the parts we needed. I spoke to Blake and explained who I was and what I was chasing, and the order was dispatched. Their supplier was out of stock of the required parts but eventually they arrived and posted to the NT....no hassle, no fuss, just real friendly service.
Anyway, yesterday I was heading to Myaree and as I was also chasing a last minute chrissy present for the boys, I rang the shop and Blake had what I wanted.....as we'd not met before, it would be a good chance to put a face to the name. When I called in, both Ryan and Blake were busy with unpacking new stock, carrying out a stocktake and serving customers, too.
However, both took a little time out for a quick chat and to show me the item I was chasing....all good, just what I was looking for and got a discount for being a FW member.
I just wanted to say thanks guys for the friendly customer service, especially during this busy time ...nice to meet you Blake and to catch up with Ryan again as I hadn't seen him in quite a while.
Although I don't go past the shop very often, knowing that you will always get great service is what sees you going back (either in person or over the phone).
Thanks again guys ![]()
regards

This weekends shark fishing efforts
Submitted by Chris fish on Sun, 2012-12-23 21:23Spent most of this weekend chasing sharks with mixed results. Sat night we got to our spot just after lunch paddled out baits and sat back and waited, first rod went off just after dark and dropped the bait before coming back and a knot failing. The next bait didn't get touched till 3am with something insane taking line at a crazy speed against full drag before biting through 600lb 49 strand wire!!!
Todays effort was mostly because we where bored so out we went again and not long after arriving we have 2 baits 3-500m out. Hour later the 40lb light gear goes off and after an hour fight we got this nice 2.3m bronzie up, few quick photo and he was on his way again.

Shimano Brag Mat Measurements
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Sun, 2012-12-23 11:21I was just sent this from a member who bought a Shimano Brag mat yesterday from BCF. Check out the measurements, a word of caution for anyone looking to measure fish.
Remember to check against a fisheries ruler as they are what the fisheries department will measure your fish against.

Catching crays
Submitted by Seafari on Sun, 2012-12-23 08:16Just wondering if you're allowed to use drop nets for catching crays in WA, like they do in other parts of the world and if so would it actually work here in WA? Basically it's a very similar system to crabbing, just much heavier gear like thicker steel ring, heavier net, longer thicker rope etc. Typically 6 nets per boat, baited up with a net bag and dropped on your favourite spot. After 20-30 mins pull the nets, release any small one's and hopefully get a keeper or two. No need for leaving pots over night, no pot winch required and you can go crayfisdhing at a moments notice.

What a pain in the... Ear?
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Sun, 2012-12-23 07:31A BRISBANE mum has suffered hearing loss after she was speared in the ear by a rogue garfish.
Julie Fison, 46, was swimming chest-deep at Port Douglas in September when the garfish leapt up and plunged a 2.5cm barb into her eardrum.
Mrs Fison, a children's adventure book writer, is still recovering from surgery.
"It was excruciating - it hit me hard enough in the head to make me collapse and bleed out of my ear," the mother of two said.
She was left with facial palsy - unable to smile or blink on one side of her face - for more than a month after the barb perforated the eardrum and penetrated a facial nerve near her brain.
It took three hours of surgery at Cairns Base Hospital to remove the barb and she has since made numerous trips to ear specialists, physio sessions, an ophthamologist and now a speech therapist - and yet she still suffers hearing loss in her left ear.

New setup - what to get?
Submitted by ca11um on Fri, 2012-12-21 22:22Hey guys, been tossing up getting a new combo lately, something around the 6kg mark or heavier. I want to use it for flinging lighter lures from like 7 grams to 25grams. Will be used for chasing jacks to tuna, Spangled emperor to dhufish and maybe some light jigging for demersals. I was having a look at the Gloomis GL2 ESP spin 8-15lb, 6'8". It has a nice light tip but the guides seem really weird on how they have placed them out. It also might just possibly be to light for what i want it to do. I wouldnt use it for jigging though.
The other rod is a Shimano Terez 15-30lb 7'2" spin rod. This is ideal for jigging and stopping the bigger class of fish. but i am not sure how it would go casting lures like 1/4 jigheads.
Any body who has tried any of these rods, your feedback is very much appreciated!!
Also if anyone has any other suggestions that would be great!! Would prefer the rod to be around 6'8"-7' and an ideal weight would be around 15-20lb. splitt grip preferred as well.
The reel is pretty much sorted, will probably be a 3000 Sol or 4000 Stradic FJ (or if anyone is selling something like this, let us know!!)
Thanks guys!!

Reel Maintenance
Submitted by Braxi on Fri, 2012-12-21 20:05G'day,
I was just got my new Stella 4000SW from Oceanside. Absolutely love it. I had it out the last few days and christened it with 7 barra, the smallest being 71cm, the biggest 85cm. The little reel handled it with ease. But now Im home and I'd like to keep this little gem in as good condition as I can. Does anyone have any care tips that I can use on my Stella to keep it reeling in barra for years to come? Thanks.

South coast Noah's
Submitted by Chris fish on Fri, 2012-12-21 18:20After recently moving to Albany I've been doing a heap of fishing and free diving but still made time to chase a few sharks.
Ive been trying to get a few small sharks to keep for tea but just can't get past the plague numbers of 2-2.5m ones!! I've been kayaking and balooning baits with good success, we have hooked 20+ sharks and landed a fair few in the last month and hooked a few monsters that are just to big to get in haha.
