revenue from fishing licenses
Submitted by grayzeee on Thu, 2010-04-01 16:18i'm just wondering how everyone thinks the revenue raised from the new fishing licenses would be best spent to improve our fishery??
fisheries officers? research? re-stocking? man made reefs?? something else?

Barra setup?
Submitted by Marky on Thu, 2010-04-01 12:44Hey all you Barra professionals out there...
Was curious as to how you all setup your rig for live baiting for Barra? I usually will have a small to medium(depending on current at the time), running sinker on 60-80lb leader down to a single hook on the bottom with the livie thru the back.
Ive been told recently that this is not the best way to do it. Because this will put the livie on the bottom to swim around. I should be using a paternoster type set up with a sinker on bottom and a single hook on a loop about 1-2m up the leader depending on how deep you are fishing too. This will put the livie swimming around the mid-high water column where the Barra attack from below like they do with lures, due to Barra sitting on the bottom of the creek looking upwards waiting to attack...
Was wondering if anyone had an opinion of this. Next time im home im going to try it out and see how it goes too.... Cheers. Mark.

rod and reel combo for salmon
Submitted by bilby on Wed, 2010-03-31 15:50hi all, in need of some help here! =)
I'm after some suggestions for a rod and reel combo for catching salmon and casting lures.
i want to be able to cast 50-70g metals and poppers FAR..like 100m+
ive got an exceler 4000 and spheros14k but i think i may need a reel something inbetween those two. budget is as low as possible, after a bang for buck combo. but willing to spend up to 400-500 inc braid.
what do you guys use?
cheers.

As promised
Submitted by Trousersnake on Wed, 2010-03-31 12:27Hit tha beach at 7 this morning. I told my mate if I was on within 10 casts we would have a good morning. Cast number 8 bang I was on. Then it was every cast for ages. It was a herring frenzy!! I had enough for me and started filling my mates bucket. He soon changed up his rig and was on fire aswell. Then tha best thing I have seen since I started fishing over here. A school of big fish maybe salmon maybe tailor I'm not sure, swam right infront of tha groyne we were on. I was stoked it's been herring, herring, herring for me every time I go out, so it was nice to see some other fish even tho they left just as quick as they showed up. We kept at it for another 30 mins or so but all went quiet. I figured maybe tha school of big fish scared off everything else. Great way to start tha day anyhow and jus glad I was able to get out.

friday night in the river
Submitted by fisho-ron on Tue, 2010-03-30 19:01

dont know if this is how to post pics as it is the first time, but i am learning.
pics from friday nights sleep out on the boats, (trying for some prawns) my young bloke in the black shirt with his first ever tailor out of the river with his couson first as well. they ended up geting 6 tailor ranging up to 35cm.
they also got a couple of small rays that night.
thats my mate asleep on his marlin board after having a few to many, thank god we were set for the night.
we went out to rotto for a fish sat morn and even though it was rough as guts we still had a good time.
i got nothing as i was rigging up for the boys, but my young bloke got a cople of black ass and his cousin pulled in a jewy.
the jewy was just under and was released to his discuss. (his first ever jewy), it all got to rough and by 10 we headed back in.
a good night/morn for the kids all round, they were stoked.

Outriggers Question
Submitted by Craig Pearse on Tue, 2010-03-30 17:24What is the best way to attach line to the clip on outriggers?
I have seen rubber bands used but wouldnt that just get in the way of the rollers on the rod?
Some thoughts from you all would be helpful.
Cheers ,

Land based bunbury report.
Submitted by couldntcatchacold on Tue, 2010-03-30 14:59
Thinking of doing this regulary for the weeks im back down here.
This is mostly for the younger guys that fish around bunbury and are looking for places and whats biting.
Heres my findings for the week!
Bunbury flood gates at the acctualy gates casting towards the bridge on a slow retrieve was producing good numbers of juvinile salmon, small skippy, chopper tailor and the occasional leather jacket and tarwhine
Bait used: White bait / Sardines
Rig used: Swivel 6lb leader small sinker ( depending on conditions) size 03 gangs
The Bunbury Estuary:
Park at the boat ramp and follow the wall down to wear the boats are moored:
Cast towards the boats and just let it sit on the bottom not to much tension on your line
Was producing good size silver bream and even a flathead and a run which im thinking may of been a soapie!
Bait: squid, white bait
rigs:
Swivel 8lb Leader small sinker Single long shank size 9 hooks for squid
Swivel 8lb Leader small sinker size 03 Gangs
Bunbury cut:
At the very end next to the navigation poles was producing Baby pink snapper great fun on light gear
In the middle was producing 25 - 32cm tailor
Casting about 6 meters out for the pink snapper
Casting into the middle with a medium to high speed retrieve for the tailor or letting an unweigheted mulie float out
Rigs:
Bait:Squid / Mulies
Swivel 8lb Leader small sinker Single size 1 circle hooks for squid
Swivel 30lb Leader No sinker set of size 4 gang hooks (depending on mulie size)
Swivel 30lb Leader Halco twisty or similiar metal lure!
Collie river mouth of the river ( near the grand canals)
Lots of yellowfin whiting around
Go to where the big old tree is on the beach section and cast out as far as you can slowly retrieving it
Bait: Squid/ blood worms/ pipis
Rig:
Swivel 6lb flurocarbon Small sinker line red tube 2 red beads size 9 longshank hook
Well hope that helps some of the younger guys and if does ill keep doing it :)

shark speices vs eating qlty + locations when posting content
Submitted by Timmo on Tue, 2010-03-30 12:49Hi Everyone
Fairly new here and as everyone has stated the site has been flat so thought i may ask a silly question.
I just bought a new boat and have been out just a few times although cacthing some good quality fish i have been pulling in many types of sharks eg gummy, hammers, whiskerys etc.
I have been hooking them generally off Hillarys and was wondering what sharks are good to eat. I know Gummy obviously is GREAT eating just wondering about some of the other species you can catch out there!!!
Another thought is that people post catches with photos etc maybe it would be a good idea to give a location where you caught them...obviously not GPS coords but maybe the general area. People do live all over WA!
Heading up to Cervantes for Easter so hope to have some quality pics to post when i get back:)
Cheers

Fishing holiday
Submitted by oldsalty on Tue, 2010-03-30 11:33Hey everyone,
I have afew questions about a fishing holiday up NW WA this winter. My problem is i have a friend coming for 6 weeks around june and thats when the bulk of the fishing exploring will get done but im not sure where to start as my experience past Carnarvon is limited.
We have a 5m 80hp side console to fish out of that handles light offshore quite easily plus sounders, GPS, gear etc....Want to get the most out of the 6 weeks as possible but want to settle on 2 or 3 locations to visit as we know the trap of moving to quick and never really getting a feel for a place.
Not sure whether to start in Carnarvon and head through Coral bay, exmouth etc, and maybe into broome and the Kimberely. Exmouth is a must but does the Kimberely have alot to offer as well? It is quite far up too, would probably be there in june.
We definately prefer big fish in the light offshore category as oppossed to creeks etc. So if u guys had 6 weeks around june where would u start?
any info much appreciated

great weekend of fishing
Submitted by breno1985 on Tue, 2010-03-30 10:37ok so i saw the topic on this site going flat and i thought i better get on board and post something( sorry if it bores you)
went to two rocks on sat night for what was meant to be a quick fish but turned into a 6 hour trip.
was there about 1 hour with not even a bite when my mullie got smashed by my PB tailor at 44cm. needless to say i was the happiest person on the rocks when that was in my hands. my mates said there no leaving till they catch just 1 fish which didnt happen, not even another bite.
Sunday mornig we drove out past gilderton n got there on first light. We fished a gap in a reef and got just about every fish in the sea.
My mate pulled in a pink snapper 2nd cast which was a shock, well undersize at about 30cm. (we were only fishing with whiting rigs all morning) then for a while it was just wrass (spelling??) blowies, herring ,funny looking things i cant name and only a few whiting which we went there for, until i got a big hit which turned out to be the biggest skippy ive ever caught at 36cm (not sure how big they get ive only ever caught small ones.
All in All a great week end

(ABC)
WA RAC rescue helicopter ABC 2010
The state rescue helicopter was sent to an area near the Capel River, between Bunbury and Busselton after an emergency beacon was detected about 05.30 this morning.
The helicopter found two men sitting on the upturned 5.5 metre boat with one man in the water about 06.45.
The three men, aged 47, 39 and 31, were taken aboard the helicopter and flown to Bunbury Airport where they were met by waiting ambulance crews.
They have been taken to Bunbury Hospital suffering mild hypothermia but it is understood their condition is not serious.
Bunbury Volunteer Marine Rescue is at the scene and is likely to attempt to tow the vessel back to shore.
