Hey guys,

Im heading to exmouth again on the 23rd of this month (bit of a spontaneous trip)... havent been up at this time of the year before... normally go june- august.

Does anyone know anything about the winds, pelagic action, around this time.

Went fishing down a lake on the weekend. I stepped on this tiger snake!!!!!!
I had thongs on !. Lucky it didnt bite me!!!felt it under my foot and it shot out into the water. I grabbed the camera and got a few good shots
In the lake there is monster carp swiming around!

I went down to the edge and stepped on this with thongs on. It shot out and into the water. Grabbed camera and got some shots. I then realised it was a tiger snake :( Lucky i didnt get bitten!

I was orignaly going to just trade my current car in and get a cruiser ute. But seeing as i drive to perth a fair bit from bunbury decided i want to keep it and looked at other options and have decided on a dune buggie.

This is my current choice.

Im thinking i can put a T-bar on the Front of the A frame and attatch rod holers on the passanger side. Theres space on the back for tackleboxes and an esky for some food and bevvys.


Just wondering on peoples opinions, maybe so ideas on how else to customize it and wether anyone has tried this before and its been a flop :)

Was down the Bunbury cut today while waiting for dusk i was playing around with some small soft plastics and much to my amusment managed to get into some small pinkys great fun on light gear a guy noticed what i was catching and came down and started fishing close to me by now it was getting towards dusk so i switched over and started firing metals all over the place and getting into the tailor, when i look over at him and notice hes now into the baby pinkys and putting them in his bucket i had just caught a nice plump 35cm tailor so taking that with me i went over to explain that your not allowed to take them and i dont eat fish so i offered to give him my tailor and the rest i catch if he puts his baby fish back in the ocean to live another day him not speaking much english starts trying to tell me "No they bream no they size you go away" even if these were bream wearing pink and blue sequined outfits they were still undersize. (He then procedeed to scream at me everytime i released a fish) Getting sick of him i went to the car and tried to call the fisheries to see if they could come down and do something about the blatant slaughter of baby pinkys :( only to get a voice mail and told to try again later.

Keen to help returned juvenile fish escape from predators, a group of professional estuarine fishermen from the South Coast have invented a unique “Fishute” device.

The bycatch reduction device comprises a concertina-style mesh shute that allows any undersized fish to be returned to the water out of sight of seabirds. Normal fishing activities attract pelicans which prey upon released fish, particularly juvenile black bream, before they have the opportunity to escape.

WA SeaNet extension officer Neil MacGuffie said he helped invent the Fishute after being approached by industry to reduce the environmental impact of the fishery. “We came up with the idea together through trial and error. It really was through industry initiative to operate more sustainably that we were able to develop this,” he explained. 

Mr MacGuffie revealed the device was introduced to a wider fishery industry meeting last week where it was enthusiastically received. 20 Fishutes have been constructed and are currently being used by the South Coast Estuarine Fishery. South Coast Licensed Fishermen’s Association president Paul Benson said the device allowed the fish to be safely released and to acclimatise to their surroundings, before attempting their escape from the pelicans. “We’ve popped some fake eyes on the outside of the device and it’s working well to stop the birds getting too close,” Mr Benson added.

South Coast NRM chief executive Rob Edkins said that by returning the juvenile fish to the water, the fishers were ensuring the future harvest and supply of locally caught fish. “The Fishute is a great example of local ingenuity born out of a real desire to conserve and protect South Coast fish stocks,” he said.

The development of the Fishute also highlights the advantages of this estuarine fishery introducing a Code of Practice for Responsible Fishing. The Fishute project is supported by the professional fishermen of the South Coast Estuarine Fishery, SeaNet, OceanWatch Australia and South Coast NRM. The project was funded under South Coast NRM’s coastal community engagement program through the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country initiative. The South Coast Estuarine Fishery’s Fishute received a commendation for the Environment Award in the 2010 Western Australian Seafood Industry Awards.

i hated the handle knob on the stock kix, it gave me blisters when constanly casting lures and poppers. This gave me a softer touch and now i can keep fishing comfortably.

Gday peolpe, we're  heading out off Onslow for a few nights in a few weeks time and was wondering if the boat ramp carpark is ok to leave a cars with trailers for a couple of nights? Makes a long drive back to Karratha with no rollers or wheels on the trailer if you know what I mean. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi all, im hoping to rig my jetski up with a setup like this before the salmon season kicks in. im only 10mins from a boat ramp in cockburn sound and was wondering what kind of fish i could expect to catch if i did a bit of trolling out near garden island and carnac. how close do the bluefin come to the sound? i read a report a couple of weeks ago in the paper and it said a fisherman caught 2 shark mack to ten kgs in between the islands by flicking SP's. is this believable? and also, has anyone had luck catching jumbo tailor from the reefies around penguin island in safety bay??

Sushi-lovers in Japan could be in for a shock if a proposed international trade ban on northern bluefin tuna goes ahead.

The United States has announced it will support the ban when it is put to a vote at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) later this month.

But Japan, the biggest consumer of the fish, has indicated it may not honour the ban if it is approved.

Peter Trott, the fisheries program manager at the environment group WWF, says bluefin tuna stocks have been in steep decline across the globe for some time.

"All species are under extreme pressure from fishing activity due to the insatiable appetite and demand for the product on the Japanese market and several other Asian markets," he said.

Brian Jeffries, the chief executive of the Australian Tuna Association, says there are three main types of bluefin tuna.

"Northern bluefin tuna or Atlantic bluefin tuna - then another type of northern bluefin which is called Pacific bluefin, which is obviously Japan and Mexico - are the major catchers," Mr Jeffries said.

"Then there is southern bluefin, which runs around Australia towards South Africa and New Zealand."

At the end of next week, representatives from 175 countries will attend CITES in Doha. They will be debating whether to ban all international trade in northern bluefin tuna.

"There's no doubt a number of countries at the CITES conference follow the United States' lead," Mr Jeffries said.

"The US has tremendous influence in its own right as the EU will when it finally makes its decision about which way to go."

But Mr Jeffries believes it is a decision based largely on self-interest.

"The effect on American and Canadian fishermen will be quite minor, particularly as the US government has announced that those fishermen will be allowed to continue to catch their quota," he said.

"So the only ban we are talking about here is not being able to trade it internationally. They are certainly not talking about a ban on catching at all."

Mr Jeffries says this means tuna caught by Americans will have to be consumed in the US.

"There's a substantial market within the US," he said.

"It is just at the slightly higher prices in Japan at various times of the year for specific types of fish, but that can easily be consumed in the US."

'Close' vote

Mr Trott says it is difficult to know which way the vote will go in Doha.

"It's going to be very close. There is a number of countries that are still undecided and Australia is particularly one of those countries and also New Zealand," he said.

"We should really be, as a responsible fishing nation, leading this charge in terms of supporting the ban as well."

Mr Trott says the ban makes economic sense for Australia.

"If you remove the Mediterranean bluefin tuna out of the market equation, then there's a clear market opportunity there for southern bluefin tuna... to increase the market share that it currently occupies within the Japan marketplace," he said.

"When you remove a product from the shelves, there is going to be another product that takes its place that is very similar in nature.

"Unfortunately the southern bluefin tuna fits that bill quite nicely."

Mr Jeffries disagrees, saying it is highly likely the southern bluefin may be nominated for a similar CITES trade ban in 2013.

He says this would hurt the Australian industry more than the short-term economic benefits that would come from a ban on the northern variety.

He also believes it could encourage black market operators.

"The black market trade in this case is to export somehow to say China, and China can then process the product and it gets imported into Japan as fillets, frozen fillets where it is very difficult to identify which fish it is."

Just watched FWA, 30 minutes of not catching Bream in the Canning!!! If Nick says one more time that he is having a great time, there is a strong chance I will kill him.

we were down our favourite spot on the beach today[hillarys] quite often see a gent with a brownish yak,with foot pedals,gets his share of squid,herring and tailor, today he had a sail attached and had been out the back of the 3 mile and down to triggs trolling for spaniards, now thats being out there and having a go! He reckons it was too calm and he couldn't get up to trolling speed, I dip my lid to the guy
