Must Haves!!!
Submitted by barneyboy on Fri, 2010-03-05 21:08I was going through the gear for an upcomming fishn trip and culling some stuff. The question came about do I really need this or that. And then the question what wouldnt I go fishing without. So a must have for me when I go fishing or something I couldnt do without would be my trusty rusty pliers and braid scissors....
Would be interesting to see what other peoples must haves are?

Want to improve your casting distances and accuracy?
Submitted by TerryF on Fri, 2010-03-05 20:06
Want to improve your casting distances and accuracy?
Can you cast 100 metres? You can do it easily with help from us. We had a junior who set casting records of 100 metres for 112 gram, and 97 metres for 56 gram when he was only 12. And he was not big for his age. Some adults regularly cast over 150 metres.
People who would like to see how it is possible to cast such long distances, how to cast accurately, and get some tips and tutition can come to the Surf Casting and Angling Club's dry casting day on Sunday 7 March.
Where:- Yokine Reserve, Wordsworth Avenue, Yokine. Competition starts at 8:30am, but club members are there from around 7:30am onwards for setup and practice.

Dry Casting is long distance casting and accuracy casting on a grassed area, where the distances and the accuracy can be measured.
We've all met the difficult situations where the water is rough, the wind is strong in your face or coming from one side, you need to land the sinker in a sand hole near reefs, cast a bait in front of a school of fish, avoid tangling with the person next to you, the person next to you is casting a bit further and catching all the fish, and so on. With the right gear and skills, you can fish almost anywhere and in almost any conditions.
You don't need any special gear to start dry casting. Many people use their regular fishing gear, particularly for the accuracy casting.
We can show you how to get the best out of your own fishing gear if you would like to bring it along. We can give advice on different rods and reels and show how these can go together, and also let you try out casting with different rod and reel combinations to find one that suits your fishing needs and your size and physical strength. This is important for the ladies and juniors, and those of us who aren't as young as we used to be, or for people who are struggling to cast the distances they want to.
Our visitors always get a lot of useful and practical tips, and often add ten to thirty metres to their casts on the first day - and, no, we don't catch many fish at drycasting, but those skills certainly help when we go fishing.
After the competition and the lessons for the visitors, we get together over a sausage sizzle and soft drinks, and talk about anything to do with fishing and casting.
Check the Club's website http://www.surfcasters.iinet.net.au/ for other Club activities.
PM / email me or the Surf Casting and Angling Club's Secretary for more information.

Boat Imports from States
Submitted by Spooled on Fri, 2010-03-05 14:40Hi all, I know from recent forums that some have discussed importing boats from the states. I am actually chasing some info from people who have done this or are involved with this process. I have heard of Platinum West out of Perth are they good?
If anyone could help with narrowing the search down for people who are involved with importing such boats that would be great. Any further info on what taxes and costs are involved would also be much appreciated.
Cheers Spooled

Long Weekend Fishing - Mandurah and Two Rocks
Submitted by wazzbat on Fri, 2010-03-05 10:23
SATURDAY - After dropping the missus off at the airport early Saturday morning bound for Melbourne with our two young boys for a week to catch up with some family and friends, I was getting excited about the prospect of three or four days of getting out in the boat.
I was down at the holiday shack in Dawesville just before 10am with Northsea eagerly awaiting. We quickly unpacked some stuff and proceeded to pack the boat ready to go. The forecast was for a windy morning with the breeze dropping right off around 11am. By the time we got our S H one T together and headed out through the Cut, it was 12pm. It was still blowing a fairly strong easterly so we putted out only about 3 mile and dropped our lines. With no success there, we decided to brave the conditions hoping it would calm off a bit. So we headed out to the 10 mile mark. We moved around a bit but couldn't find much. It had started to calm off and the conditions were awesome by then. We should have headed out further but decided with another few days ahead, we wouldn't wear ourselves out.
We headed back into a spot where we had caught a few bits and pieces before and tried anchoring up with some berley thrown overboard. I got onto a nice size KG along with a nice little Black Arse and a small Nannagai. Northsea ended up with a nice Skippy. We called it a day and headed back in with the conditions still spot on. It was a long day with the boat being wheeled back into the shed at about 7pm.
Feeling a bit ripped off we had a few beers then Northsea copped a slap in the face by the way of a message from another work mate. "Told you guys to come up to Two Rocks" And a picture of a 16kg and a 10kg Dhuie. We knew we had to do better tomorrow!
SUNDAY - We knew the weather was going to be about the same so we didn't bother getting up too early. We stuffed about and got out through the cut at about 11pm. We decided to head straight out to 10 mile and dropped lines. No luck again. We went another 5 with the same result. We were losing hope. Out another 5 mile and first drop - bang. It wasn't big so I pulled it up slow and was dissapointed when abig gurnett surfaced. Bugger. And that was it for the whole day. We drifted, moved, drifted, moved, drifted all day with not even the odd bite. Tried a couple of spots on the way in with no success. Then it got worse...
The missus rang but by the time we fished my phone out of the glove box it had rang out. So I put it in my top pocket and was going to ring her back. Then while we were cleaning up after our last drop, i leant over the side to wash my hands and plop! I watched my phone do a perfect 10 - triple twist with a half pike then dive out of site 30 meters to the bottom of the ocean. I was gutted and resigned to the fact it wasn't meant to be and it just wasn't my day! Home by 5.30pm pissed off!
MONDAY - After some humming and aahhring I decided I would tow the boat back to Perth (a couple of weeks earlier than Dad wanted - for a service) and head out from Two Rocks on the Tuesday. Northsea was keen as. He went out when his bro in law got a Dhuie a couple of weeks back from there. We really wanted to get one ourselves and didn't like our chances in Mandurah!
TUESDAY - Up at the ramp by 5.30am with only one other boat out, we headed out through glassy conditions. It was magic and we thought we were in for a ripper day. Took just 10 mins to get out to our first spot about 6 mile out. Then just 30 mins later the wind came up SW and white caps were in another half hour later. We battled the weather the rest of the day but managed to get out a bit further and had a bit of fun pulling up a ray, a small shark, a small black arse, a small dhuie and a nice Baldy along with a few other bits and pieces. The Dhuie and Black arse were just sized but we felt bad keeping them cause they looked tiny. They were both sent back down on the release weight (first time I had used one) in good condition. Hopefully that's karma and we get a big one next time!
And that was the end of our extra long weekend. We were a little bit dissapointed putting in so much time and effort for such little reward but we said a few times that it was a good break from our families and it sure beats going to work. I hope the photos work?

Submitted by ricey on Thu, 2010-03-04 21:28Hey learned people,
I am sure i am not the first to ask, but can anyone recommend a fishing charter (or unrecommend) from Exmouth, preferrably leaving from Tantabiddi. I am staying just a few days in Exmouth national park and would like to head out on a charter, have my own gear.
Probably keen to land a mackeral, but happy bottom bouncing. Going in July.
any feedback appreciated.

Locations to buy bait
Submitted by H.S. Chan on Thu, 2010-03-04 14:28
Now this is something that always gets me stumped in the worst of times.
Something that I always wish I knew when I needed.
Where to buy baits, like what time is this place open and where are they. Not tackle stores but deli's servos, whether they sell tackle as well... Because I bet most people here have missed out on buying bait the day before, or if spare of the moment tried to head for a flick, but either cant find what you need because you dont know who sells them or they are out of stock on what you're after.
I'll start;
Caltex Servo on canning HWY heading to freo towards traffic bridges on the right sells prawns and mulies (upto 2kg block) and some other baits i cant remember and they're open 24hrs.
North Mole Kiosk has baits.. drive by all the time and never noticed they sell em.
Gull servo south of the swan river causeway on a street between albany hwy and shepperton rd just north of skippers caryards and opposite subaru sells river prawns, mulies (6 mulies - 1kg) and some other i dont remember. open 24hrs
Woodmans Point boat ramp kiosk has baits and various tackle.
BP servo, heading towards freo on canning hwy just after the 2nd traffic bridge on your left has baits and to have 2kg mulies. open 24hrs
**Just thought this thread WILL come in handy, as i know it'd help me to know some more. So many times i get stuck driving around for ages looking for bags of mulies, glowlights etc as not all servos sell it or have stock. As everyone knows, sometimes fishing is just spare of the moment or the weather gives in to ya for once.**
So please share any knowledge you may have about this topic as i know it'd help alot of fisho's out there. Good to have this on hand with a click of the search button.
Cheers in advance.

New deepwater port and industrial precinct for the Pilbara
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2010-03-04 13:57The Liberal-National Government has identified Anketell, 30km east of Karratha and 10km from Cape Lambert, as the next major deepwater iron ore port for the Pilbara.
The multi-user deepwater port and industrial precinct will complement Port Hedland and Dampier ports.
Premier Colin Barnett said the Government would spend $3.5million during the next three years to plan and prepare an Industrial Precinct Development Agreement for the project including commercial, legal and engineering advice to negotiate the agreement.
“Anketell was first identified during the 1970s as a potential iron ore port. Now, 40 years later, the Liberal-National Government is helping make this project happen,” Mr Barnett said.
“The port will be serviced by existing towns, especially nearby Karratha, providing further business and development opportunities for Pilbara communities.
“This project will help Western Australia develop and the revenue it will generate will help pay for our schools, hospitals and other services.”
The precinct, which would ultimately include a port with more than 350 million tonnes annual (Mtpa) export capacity, an industrial area of more than 1,400ha and a corridor for transport and services, would be developed to accommodate a range of users and different mineral commodities. The port would have a cap placed on it in future to ensure the viability of existing ports.
The multi-user port will be built by a private proponent under an agreement with the State Government.
Three significant iron ore projects are potential foundation investors in the new precinct:
· API Management for its 30-40 Mtpa West Pilbara Iron Ore Project
· Fortescue Metals Group Ltd for its 30-60 Mtpa Solomon Project
· China Metallurgical Group Corporation for its 15 Mtpa Cape Lambert Iron Ore Project.
“The Government will work with these companies, or an infrastructure provider to develop the project, with plans to commence operations by 2015,” the Premier said.
“Today’s announcement joins a list of projects by the Liberal-National Government aimed at developing the north of the State - the native title agreement with Yawuru community; the $300million Pilbara Cities project to create modern liveable communities; and the development of a LNG processing precinct at James Price Point to deliver social and economic benefits for Aboriginal people.
“The strength of WA’s iron ore exports and the growth plans of current users are testing the capacity of the existing Pilbara ports.
“In 2008-09 the Pilbara exported more than 326 million tonnes of bulk commodities, mainly iron ore.
“This is forecast to reach more than 530 Mtpa by 2015 and as much as 750 Mtpa by 2020.
“The Anketell port and industrial precinct will provide opportunities for new exports and processing of iron ore and other minerals.”
The Department of State Development would lead negotiations on behalf of the Government, Dampier Port Authority would manage the new port and infrastructure corridors and LandCorp would develop the industrial precinct.

Northern Super Deep Jigging?
Submitted by jay_burgess on Thu, 2010-03-04 12:29Ok so I've been looking at some charts for a while and I'm pretty excited to be looking into what is a fairly untouched fishery. As super deep jigging grows in popularity in the southern part of our state I'm wondering what the possibilities are up here? The edge of the shelf is a lot further from the mainland here but if based at the Monties it puts you within range of some super deep water. Although popular for marlin fisherman and those few that like to target broadbill, little is heard about the bottom fish in these depths. What I do know is that relatively good fishing for big ruby snapper can be had but what else can be caught out there?? I'd be interested to know.
