Sunday Charter
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2008-02-18 07:46Went out on the Nebraska yesterday. The weather wasn't too bad. Bit of a swell and bit choppy on the way in, but not too bad overall. We ended up off Two Rocks somewhere. Didn't have much joy myself but there was a nice sambo caught, a nice jewie, a few pinkies, a big king george whiting, a nice flathead and a few other assorted fish.
Tony is a good bloke and a good skipper and he is worthwhile giving a go if you are lookijg at booking a charter.
All the best, Colin Hay

Out of season lobster fishing attracts hefty fines!
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2008-02-17 11:12
Magistrate Sue Richardson imposed the fines, penalties and costs on the fisherman, in the Denham Court today, after receiving a plea of guilty by endorsement from 26 year-old Shane Colin Cooper of Denham, who wasn’t required to attend court.
In a video record of interview Cooper had admitted to being the master of the vessel LFBG230 Sandman on 11 November last year (2007), when he was observed by Fisheries and Marine Officers to be using a speargun as he snorkelled at South Gregories on the Peron Peninsula.
The court was told six rock lobsters were taken by means of a spear and a further eleven rock lobsters had been taken by hand and that Cooper had removed the heads of those lobsters that he had taken by hand.
Among the range of charges against him, Cooper had also pleaded guilty to possession of a rock lobster with spawn attached and two others in breeding condition.
He was fined $10,500 for the six offences under the Fish Resources Management Act and ordered to pay court coast of $110.20 plus additional mandatory penalties of $5184 for the rock lobster he took during the illegal fishing.
Department of Fisheries Gascoyne Compliance Manager Kieth Van Dongen said by imposing hefty fines today, the Magistrate had reflected the seriousness of these offences.
“The offender was well aware he was fishing during a closed season for rock lobster and also that he could not take rock lobster by means of a spear at any time,” Mr Van Dongen said.
“Fishing for rock lobster is not allowed between the end of June and 15 November each year anywhere in WA waters and additional area and time closures can and do apply during other months – depending on the relevant commercial or recreational fishing rules.
“The laws we have are designed to keep our fisheries sustainable and illegal activities like this are not acceptable to the community as a whole and to the people who do the right thing whenever they go fishing, because they want to help ensure there will be fish for the future.”
Anyone with information about suspected illegal fishing activity by commercial or recreational fishers is urged to call Fishwatch anytime on 1800 815 507, or contact their local Department of Fisheries office.

Whats the best way to catch barra
Submitted by Watto069 on Thu, 2008-02-14 19:30I have a trip coming up to the kimberly region and was wondering what the best method for fishing barra is and what is the best rig/ lure to use. Some people swear by lures and others live bait. I am keen to try both and catch my first barra but any info that could point me in the right direction to catchin the prized barra would be great.

Sunday's weather
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2008-02-14 11:51Not being a boatie, I am wondering if some of you experienced hands have any thoughts on what the weather is looking like for going offshore fishing on Sunday. I looked at Seabreeze on Tuesday and it looked fantastic. Had a day off yesterday and started getting my gear ready to go out boat fishing for the firts time in two years and came back to work today to find that the conditions have all changed.
Sunday looks like a good day for beach fishing and, I think, it looks okay for offshore early. But you guys know far better than me.
Many thanks Colin Hay

Two rocks mon 12th
Submitted by bouttime on Tue, 2008-02-12 14:52Well finially got up to Two rocks for a fish. Took SamC and a mate from work who lives up that way.
Took off about 7am by the time we got sorted. Started looking around in the 40s for a bit of ground. Found a few fish on the first lump, 1 bust off and my mate boated the biggest NW Blowie i have ever seen, time to move. Found some pots out a bit deaper in 45mt so had a drop and put a few big blackass and 2 baldies in the esky. Still a very slow day so with the weather being nice decided to head out a bit deaper. Found a bit of ground in 65mtr and after finding the right drift i pulled up 2 dhuies 1 about 10kg and his mate about 6kg and another baldie. Ended up having to head home about 3pm as it started blowing from the south at about 20knts. Ended up being 22NM out from the ramp.
Not a bad day out concidering we went up with no ground but still came back with a feed. Ended up with 2 dhuies, 3 baldies, 6 blackass all good size and a fox fish.
Will def head back again sometime soon. No one had a camera so sorry no photos.
And Sam i am sure you will crack your Dhuie cherry on my tub soon mate. Next time.

Just back from Jurien bay
Submitted by BQ544 on Mon, 2008-02-11 18:51Just got back from our 3 day weekend at Jurien Bay......
Fishing was pretty good with Dhuies, baldies, Pinkies, etc caught everyday.
Most of our activity seemed to be between the 60 to 65 metre line on the second bank.
It was very interesting to see the 12:30 bite time (Almanac )and the breeze swinging from the east to the south, happening at the same time and then producing very good dhuies caught with in 30 minutes of that.
Came in to the South passage and had a dive just out from the channel markers and was very impressed at the number of Baldies swimming around in 8 to 10 metres of water.

What lb rating leader should I use, a higher or equivilant rating as my braid, what length of leader do you use and which fluorocarbons would you recomend.

Your thoughts!
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2008-02-10 09:31Okay, there's a few Fishing charter boats working Perth metro area and what they offer you can vary so much. I know from being on many fishing charters and working as a decky had me thinking back then on how a charter boat should operate IMO
There's many members here that go on fishing charters and i'll throw a few questions up and i'd like your thoughts please (will be used)
* Do people prefer to fish shallower water or deeper if they're getting good fish that is?
* Do people prefer to travel less and do more fishing (easy answer i know)?
* Do people prefer to use proper overhead reels with braid or an alvey with a stiff rod and mono?
* What bait do people like using?
* Do you like whole baits or cut up?
* Do you like to have breakfast supplied if so what?
* Do you like to have a lunch as part of the price and if so what?
* Do people prefer to take their fish home whole or would like it filleted?
* Whats a fair price with everything thrown in $200/$220?
* Do people like overnighter Fishing trips ie going North a bit?
* Whats peoples thoughts on night Fishing charters?
* Would there be expression's of interest on jigging charters for bottom species?
* What time do people like to leave and come back...7am - 3pm?
* LAST but certainly not least, What is your critisism's of previous charters that you didn't like (please no Company names mentioned or long story's Thanks)??
There's something happening down the track re what i'm asking but please no discussion on that until latter.....thanks in advance!

Bait tips- anything baits please add your hints on keeping, presentations rigging
Submitted by Neander on Sat, 2008-02-09 17:18I thought I would post a few things I have do, anyone else adding theirs would be good.
Some of this is second nature to some but might help others.
Keep your meat trays when you buy meat from your supermarkets. These are great for laying your fresh caught Gardies, Scalies etc on and putting in the freazer.
Add 5 - 8 per tray and cover with cling wrap. Keeps them nice and straight and easy to seperate. Easy to stack in the freezer and if its a quick fish you only need to take 1 or 2 trays.
Also lets you keep your other bait in the fridge/freezer/icebox while fishing making it last a bit longer.
I keep my bait fresher by seperating them and packing in containers when I purchase it.
I save my dispaosable take away containers and use these to split my bait into.
Buy good pillies that are loose in the bag and pack as many as I can into each container.
This way you again keep most of your baits as cold as possible and only bring out 1 container at a time to use.
This is also very handy if there is nothing biting, you can 90% of the time bring leftover baits home and put back in the freezer without the baits starting to spoil.
When land based fishing I though the engil in the car and have it on freezer, again this keeps bait fresher longer and is the fishing shit, just bring it home adn pack it away again.
Helps keeps costs down when fishing.
When you are away for a few days with just an esky for your bait, take a big bag of salt and salt your bait down.
Helps them turning to mush and stops the going of in your esky.
Hope this helps a few and if you have in more tips on presentation rigging keeping bait add them below.
Cheers

Coral Bay pack list
Submitted by eddie on Sat, 2008-02-09 11:42Ok, y'all told me to ask specific questions, so here are some for you.
We plan to be out on the boat for four days of fishing on this trip to Coral Bay. What gear would you pack for the trip? We have a 6.5 meter boat. Two medium/heavy bait-casting rigs. Two medium spinning rigs, and probably 3-4 light/medium spinning rigs.
So I want to know what weight line you would use? mono or braid?
What and how many lures would you take for trolling for Spanish Mack/tuna/etc? colors and sizes if you don't mind? any idea on tactics for trolling? time of day, speed, depth of water?
What size weights/hooks would you take for bottom fishing there? How would you rig them? I assume we'll need wire leaders for everything, so what weights/lengths and how many?
Other gear that you wouldn't leave home without? Please, don't assume that I know anything about saltwater fishing...bc I don't know much!
if you are willing to tackle any and all of these questions....I'd really appreciate it! No offense to Tackle Shops, but I hate asking these questions there, bc I can't shake the feeling that they just want to sell me as much as possibe. I'd rather hear this stuff from you guys. Feel free to give me some helpful links to...I don't mind doing some digging.
Thanks in advance for all the help/advice!

Light rod to suit reel?
Submitted by jimbo1 on Fri, 2008-02-08 20:45G'day all just recently got a Daiwa 2500 Freams Kix
And I was after suggetsions on a suitable rod to match it with. Will be putting 10lb braid on the reel and want to use it for bream, flathead, K.G fishing, perhaps even try and tame the odd tuna and salmon. Landbased and boat use essential, not looking at spending over $150.
Cheers
