Poppers
Submitted by abandon on Wed, 2007-10-24 08:47May be a dumb question but do poppers and other surface lures work at night time? I know colour is a big attractor for the fish, hence lure fishing is done during the day, but the fact that surface lures disturb the water and make sounds, does this attract fish in the dark?

New T-curve "GT Special" Rod
Submitted by SamC on Tue, 2007-10-23 14:25Has anyone had a play with one yet? wondering what there like? pretty sure there not available yet, does anyone know when they will be?
it would be the cheapest GT rod around, and for what they are going to retail for the look the goods with good components! i think they will retail for around the $500ish mark
they look differently built to the other tcurves (kingmacks n bluewater), different graphite and reel seat. they look awesome though!
im sure they don't rate closely to the highly rated GT rods (carpenter, seed, smith etc...) but im sure they will the job fine and run 80lb through them fine!
Length: 8ft (2 pce, "travel butt" construction)
Rated: PE 3-8
Lure weight: 100-200g
Guides: SiCs

Submitted by ian.young on Tue, 2007-10-23 08:39Gday all
I just got back from a trip to Tokyo where I picked up a Daiwa Zillion 100H. Now I want to know what rod I should put it on. I'll be using 20lb braid, and the outfit will be used for casting lures to snags for barra etc. I want to be able to cast lightish lures like flatz rats etc. Of-the-rack recommendations please.

Collecting crab, rules and regs?
Submitted by SPESS on Mon, 2007-10-22 11:38I was just wondering what the rule is for collecting crabs for bait or a feed. Now im talking about those little black and brownish crabs that are all over the rocks at hillaries rock walls. The only reason i ask is because ive seen some unworthy methods of catching these little fellas over the last couple of outings when i have been there.
These methods include BBQ tongs, and nets. It happens to give me the shits a bit when you are trying to have a fish when you've got 10 little blokes running around you trying to catch them and they yell and carry on while catching endless amounts of these crabs no bigger than id say 100mm long, including leggs! I did ask one guy after yelling a little bit of abuse at him from getting in my way and knocking over my small tackle box!, what he was using them for and he said."a feed yeah".
Any info would be great so i might be able to educate these guys further (if they are in the wrong) than having to call sea rescue when there all in the water swimming for there lifes! JOKES! :)

whats your most embarrasing fishing moment
Submitted by davey on Sat, 2007-10-20 17:15hi all
had my most embarrasing fishing moment this morning,
having been buried, reefed or spooled on all my recent outings i decided to beef up the tackle
new spheros with 65lb braid,80lb wind on leader, owner hooks, if i couldnt land em with that i give up.
went out 5,30 am today, lots of chop and a bit windy so stayed around the reefs
out went the mulie,,after about an hour on light tackle trying to get the missus a feed (unsuccsesfully, one nor west blowie)
off went the mulie,
now im sure you all know that feeling when you lift the rod and it arcs up like moby dick is on the end.....
this time it all feld different,no screaming drag, just kind of really tight then not so tight also the line was under the boat, the water getting rougher and the wind blowing up...
i really just couldnt call it,after about 10 minutes of me puffing and panting (too many fags) i decided it must just be the mother of all weed beds,,but every now and again line would peel off the drag,,very confusing also by now the boat was drifting quite a lot!!!!!!!!
finally the leader came into sight, pumping more and more now just wanting the pain to end i saw it,,
something i have never caucht before, nor ever want to again

Anglers called on to help with barramundi research
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Fri, 2007-10-19 17:39Anglers called on to help with barramundi research
Pilbara anglers are being asked to join the volunteers who are helping to find out more about the abundance and vulnerability of barramundi in the region, through a new research project.
Chris Van der Merwe, chairman of the Pilbara Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee, said the volunteers will be able to take part in a tagging program that will help gather much needed data about barramundi stocks between 80 Mile Beach and Onslow.
“The program involves learning how to properly tag barramundi, catching them, measuring and weighing them, recording the data, putting a tag in, and releasing them,” he said.
“It also involves recording the same data if a tagged fish is recaptured.
“We will supply the training, tags and catch cards and the information will be collated and analysed by Department of Fisheries scientists, who are trying to find out more about migration, growth rates, catch rates and population sizes of barramundi in the Pilbara.”
Barramundi (Lates calcarifer) is a tropical species that is highly sought after by anglers for its sport-fishing qualities. The species is also a popular fish for eating. Barramundi are protandrous (start life as males) and catadromic (spend part of their life in freshwater and part in salt water).
Barramundi can be found in creeks and rivers of the Pilbara, where juveniles often inhabit the upper reaches and move downstream to spawn. Mature fish inhabit coastal waters, estuaries and lagoons, returning to the estuaries to spawn.
Mr Van der Merwe said it was hoped the tagging research could help provide some answers for key questions.
“We are hoping to find out whether these are isolated populations that depend on local breeding stocks, or whether they are replenished by larvae, juveniles or adults moving in from further north,” the Pilbara RFAC Chairman said.
A second question is how big is the barramundi population in the Pilbara and what sort of pressure can it withstand in the face of dramatic population growth due to the mining and gas boom and increasing tourism?”
Interested anglers are invited to contact Chris Van der Merwe on 9187 0254 for details, or to leave their name and contact number with the Department of Fisheries office in Karratha on 9144 4337 so the organisers can call back and help them get involved in the project.

Repeat offender banned from abalone fishing!

Repeat offender banned from abalone fishing
Date: Friday, 12 October 2007
A 40 year-old man has been prohibited from fishing for abalone in Western Australia, following an order handed down in a Joondalup court this week (Wednesday 10 October).
Duy Cam Dao of Marangaroo was additionally ordered to pay fines, court costs and a mandatory penalty amounting to $9,100.70 for being involved in taking abalone from reefs off Waterman, where abalone fishing is not allowed. He also forfeited all of the fishing gear he used at the time.
The court was told that Dao was one of three men, who appeared to become startled after returning to shore with their catch, dumped it and ran from the beach to a vehicle parked on West Coast Highway where they were intercepted by Fisheries and Marine Officers.
Supervising Fisheries and Marine Officer Mark Kleeman said that Dao and the two other men had dropped bags, containing a total of 330 abalone, shortly before being apprehended just before 1am on Wednesday 25 January 2006.
“Dao also refused to give his name and address, when called on to do so by the Fisheries and Marine Officers who apprehended him,” Mr Kleeman said.
“The men were trying to operate under the cover of darkness, but were seen by Fisheries Officers from the cliff top above beach in the Waterman’s Reef Observation Area, which is closed to the take of abalone at all times of the year.
“Abalone fishing is very tightly managed between the Busselton Jetty and the Greenough River Mouth, to help ensure the future of the fishery. As well as no take areas, the recreational season is very limited in those areas where abalone fishing is allowed.
“WA has one of the few remaining sustainable abalone fisheries in the world and, as part of ensuring its careful management based on good research, there will be only six hours of abalone fishing allowed in the West Coast zone this year - between 7am and 8am on six consecutive Sundays from 4 November - 9 December 2007.”
Mr Kleeman said Dao’s two co-offenders were convicted and heavily fined in November last year and this week’s court rulings resulted in an appropriate conclusion to the case.
“The magistrate took into account that this was a second offence for Dao and issued an order under Section 225 of the Fish Resources Management Act to ban him from fishing for abalone because the offence was serious and he hadn’t learnt his lesson,” he said.
More details on the rules that apply to abalone fishing in WA are available online at www.fish.wa.gov.au, where you can download a new brochure for the 2007/2008 seasons.
Sucked in i say.......smug ignorance!

ebay
Submitted by luke george on Sun, 2007-10-14 17:50Gday i've been having a look around ebay lately for fishing gear and have been buying a few things and i find it pretty amazing the stuff on the and the price. I brought 425 scented 2" grubs for $13 including delivery. anc considering there about $10 for 25 in the shops thats a pretty amazing sale. I though they would have been useless but alreaddy in a few weeks i have caught herring, bream, skippy, whiting, pink snapper, breaksea cod and harlequin on them. Also brought a good bottom bashing outfit overhead reel on a 24kg standup with 80lb braid all up for $80 and the outfit has certainly shown it can stand up to most fish alreaddy used it on the pinkys in the sound and out deep on some dhufish and a mulloway. Anyone who hasnt had a look should really check it out some amazing savings there

Use your imagination.....
Submitted by rickets on Wed, 2007-10-10 10:32You find yourself stumbling on a killer fishing spot which holds tailor, and all the bread and butter species, however, your car has just broken down and the closest place to you is 150kms away...
The place is so remote that on average, someone else usually drives past once every 5 days so you set up for the long haul and all you have on you is 1 rod, its 8 foot and graphite and has a quality daiwa or shimano reel to match...
Your gear only consists of a couple of metal slices, 3 packs of soft plastics and a couple of stick baits.
Given your dire situation, you are fortunate enough to have enough water to last you a week but you're bloody hungry...
....................................
In this situation, what metal slices would you have? What 3 softies? and what stick baits would you absolutely need and trust to keep you fat and happy until help arrives?
Ps, you broke your left wrist punching the car cos its such a piece of crap... something like h0ju's car (haha) so you can only cast one handed
:P

Swan river - barges - mosman bay
Submitted by Dean on Tue, 2007-10-09 10:30The latest hotbite mag has got a article about a couple of shipwrecks in mosmans bay in the river. Never knew they existed until now, when the mullas start moving into the river we were thinking about doing a night fish on it.
So has anyone on here actually found where the barges are? Doubt someone is going to give me co-ords, so my question is what does it look like on the sounder? The artice stated that they are pretty broken so are likely to be difficult to find, if it all. any help appreciated.
Any clues? anyone

The Leuwin Current
Submitted by Dean on Mon, 2007-10-08 18:44The lewin current should be getting up there soon, saw a leatherback turtle on sunday afternoon on the way back in to oceanreef boat ramps. At first we thought it was a pilot whale then saw it's big back come up out the water, none of the pics turned out :(
So this might be a sign of the current warming up? I hear the spanish mackerel are making their way down atm.
