Rod recommendations

 Hey all

Been a while since Ive posted, and even though the site seems to be having a lot less traffic lately, thought Id ask the question...

Im looking for a couple of PE5 boat rods. A stickbait/ medium popper and a (preferrably) slow jig model. Will be on a 5000 Saltiga so after decent quality, hopefully in the $300-500 range for each

Struggling to find something perfect in both rods, have looked at the usuals (Daiwa Spartans, Oceans legacy, NS etc) but struggling to find things that might be perfect. the jig rod will be used for both baits and jigs (usually 100-200gm range) in the 60-90m depth range- most of them are broomsticks that impart little action on the jigs and are only good for baits in reality...

Ideally, the jog stick is around 6 feet long, and the lure rod around 7.

any advice would be GREATLY appreciated

Cheers!

Boat Sales

Is it just my imagination or has there been an influx of boats being advertised on FB at the moment with prices pulling back toward semi-realistic? I drive past Boat City on the way home and have watched their yard go from full in 2019 to empty during Covid and now is filling up quickly... with some nice boats too.

Lip Service by Minister Punch

In February we wrote to Minister Punch, and the Premier and Small Business Minister, regarding the impact that the changes to fisheries regulations were having on our small business.  The issue to us is the significant reduction in revenue for our business (57% in February, and currently 43% in March 2023 compared to the same period in 2022) and the fact that the changes would have real impact on the sustainability of our family owned and operated small business.

We received a letter of reply from Minister Punch today that was a self-serving justification as to why it was acceptable to make a decision that caused us so much economic hardship, with no offer of any assistance.  The text of the letter is included below.  Clearly the Government position is “we don’t care about you or your small business, the fish are more important”.

Personally, I would have preferred the 10 million to be spent on further research, including appropriate triple bottom line assessments, prior to the implementation of a decision that has such wide ranging impacts on the West Australian community.

Thank you for your correspondence of 1 February and 10 February 2023 regarding the effects of new management arrangements in the West Coast Bioregion. The Premier has asked me to respond on his behalf.

The West Coast Demersal Scalefish Resource (WCDSR) is just over halfway into a 20-year recovery plan following a period of overfishing in the 1990s and 2000s. A 2021 scientific stock assessment for the resource provided an important “health check” on the recovery status.

The stock assessment revealed that the management arrangements introduced around 2010 have been successful in halting any further decline of the indicator species (Western Australian (WA) dhufish and snapper), but there has been limited recovery. The assessment also indicated that fishing pressure was still too high and that recovery by 2030, in line with the recovery plan, was unlikely without additional management action. The resource is at risk of further declines which would require even stronger management interventions.

The rules introduced recently to achieve 50 per cent reductions in allowable catch levels for recreational, commercial and charter fishers are necessary to reduce fishing pressure to sustainable levels to allow recovery of the WCDSR.

I am aware that businesses such as tackle stores, bait suppliers, fishing charter operators and accommodation providers with a strong focus on the WCDSR are likely to be impacted by these new rules. It must be recognised, however, that the sustainability of the resource must take primacy for determining what level of management should be implemented for our natural resources.

The new management package is designed to recover WCDSR within an acceptable timeframe in order to build longer term resilience for the resource. This outcome will directly benefit the recreational, commercial and charter fishing sectors, and also those businesses that are reliant on fishing related expenditure.

Your efforts to aid the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development through the ‘Send Us Your Skeletons’ program are appreciated and provide important information on fishing activities that support several important stock assessments across the state. These assessments are necessary to ensure there will be fish for the future.

Several of your suggestions to help recover the resource are relevant to the final WCDSR package including the metropolitan zone (Lancelin to south of Mandurah) being closed to commercial fishing for demersal scalefish, changes to bag and size limits to reduce discard mortality, development of digital catch reporting for recreational fishers, increased science and monitoring and extensive education and awareness programs. The WA Government has committed $10 million funding to supporting this.

Further information regarding these initiatives can be found at https://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Fishing-and-Aquaculture/demersal/Pages/default.aspx.

With respect to your concerns about the Marmion Marine Park extension, I understand that impacts on fishing will be strongly considered as part of this planning process, and Government is committed to seeing a balanced outcome in the final marine park design.

Thank you for writing to the WA Government regarding these important matters.

Yours sincerely

Slippery slope of new rules

 Hi all

I went barra fishing on the Daintree in FNQ last Thursday. We got quite a few small fish plus some jacks. Bloody good fun but not an easy river to fish.

I naturally got talking to the guide about our new demersal rules and the similarities to QLD changes were amazing. It's like the same people are pulling the strings everywhere, which they probably are. He was mostly unhappy about the spanish mack closed seasons. Fisheries floated two scenarios, both of which were not popular (another of Frosty's shit sandwich versus toasted shit sandwich). When they received a heap of objection they implemented the lesser evil. Fishos there are of the same opinion that in the end they want us to take nothing and in the long term ban fishing. Just thought I'd share this.

Xd100 NoR?

Regional Changes Imminent?

I was at the Exmouth Court last week and talking to a Fisheries Officer while waiting.... Initially chatting about most common infringement types etc in that region and then got to talking briefly about the recent changes for the West Coast Region as he had recently relocated from Gerladton. He mentioned that a reduced personal limit from 5 fish to 3 fish is already on the cards as a result of expected increase in pressure from fisherman travelling outside of the West Coast Region during the bans.

Certainly not unforeseen but sounds as though it could be iminent for the regions..... If only they had good data on how many fish are lost to sharks in this region, they might look at that avenue to protect fish stocks instead, and i'd assume with a much greater chance of success!! Might also save the average fisherman some money on tackle lost to the bastards!!

Active target 2

Righteo, I've joined the cheat brigade and bought myself a lowrance active target 2 bundle pack due in the next week. Pretty excited about the outlandish splurge, but you only live once.. anyone running AT2 at the moment and any tips / tricks to be aware of?  Is it the game changer everyone says it is - from some of the footage and youtuve video I've been watching it certainly seems that it is..

FSC Blue Marlin Classic

I heard a couple of marlin were caught last weekend.

Does anyone know the final rundown?

Ta.

Flying foam moorings

 Hi All,

Chasing info from any old school ktowners on rough locations (or exact would be even better, lol) of the old moorings that were pulled out of the foam.  Really want to tick that one off the bucket list, but don't want to spend hours zigzagging trying to find them. Have some rough ideas on where I think they were, but any help be good.

Cheers
