Big whoopsie
Submitted by Broome lad on Wed, 2015-12-30 06:43How not to park your boat at Rotto , my mate took this from his chopper apparently coming into Rotto night before last not sure how you don't see them rocks on the plotter but I wouldn't take my eyes of it going in there at night might have been some challenging night boating skills down in Mandurah if this guy was there .

crabbing at the moment
Submitted by Macca234 on Tue, 2015-12-29 17:19Hi all
We have our brother over from the eastern states and he is keen on a family crabbing trip like old times. Where would we be best to take him? Mandurah or Swan River? Either scooping or in the tinny? Thanks

Tasty Dash Before Today's Wind
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2015-12-29 16:30Headed out early, well 5.30 am so not that early, with the Wife and Daughter to pull the pots before the wind. We have the “red hunters” a bit deeper and generally fish the ground around the pots before or after you pull them. You don’t get the quantity of the whites run but a few crays and an excuse to fish works for me.
I have pulled the pots a couple of times, and they hadn’t been “pulled”. An interesting observation was we got 6 crays on the first pull and they were all female (2 could be kept), and then today (2 days later) we got another 6 but they were all male (4 could be kept – one was just remains due to an occy but was male). Today seems like a mix of a white with the reds as well?
The wind was in about 7am so we headed closer. Lots of sand whiting at the back of the 3 Mile at the moment, as seems to happen at this time of year, so we set a target at a dozen and it didn’t take long.
How good is a place where you can go for a couple of hours with the family and bring this home, to be eaten fresh on the day they were caught!
I was a little surprised by the amount of boats launching when we came in given the deteriorating wind conditions, and the strong wind warning for later in the day?

sounder advice
Submitted by JWake71 on Tue, 2015-12-29 16:01Hi guys, after some sounder advice please.
My wife just generously purchased a garmin gps echo map / fish finder for me.
I already have a garmin 172c 2004 model gps and a fish easy 240 2005 model fish finder.
So I have a couple questions.
1. Is there much difference in the gps models, as I guess fishing maps would not have changed to much over the years.
2. Am I better off exchanging the new gps for a decent fish finder and keep using the older gps.
I'm fairly new to the boating / fishing game so any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers guys.

Hello from a Newbie!
Submitted by STORMBOY on Tue, 2015-12-29 09:45I have been following this forum from time to time and wanted to say Hello! (and introduce myself)
I fish out of Hillary’s and Ocean Reef mainly in a shared Red Barcrusher 6.1m 130hp Etec, not getting out a lot but try to get out at least once per week. I used to travel to Shark Bay before I got my boat to get my “fish Fix”, never doing great but always good enough to plan to returnJ
It wasn’t until a couple of local tackle stores (and incidentally a couple of fine individuals) put me right in terms of where to look for Skippy, Tailor and herring. Recently in the last 2 years I have had some good success with Dhufish and Snapper fishing between 15-38m)
I love fishing afternoons, preferring to wake up at a normal time (have 3 year old boy) and fish in the PM without being afraid to come home after dark…I’m a stickler for using Mulies as bait and would love to learn more about other baits and Jigging techniques.
I will close of my saying thank you for your posts that I have learnt from and I really hope to contribute to this board and indeed share some of the knowledge that I have with others and in turn learn more from the more advanced and personable members of this forum.
Please do not hesitate to PM me or ask me questions about my fishing- Looking forward to earning some respect and making some good friends.

Submitted by Gav475 on Tue, 2015-12-29 06:33well yesterday was a first for me. Headed out wide to the bank from MIndarie early on a day that promised so much. Fished a heap of marks from 7 to 2 for nothing, 1 or 2 picker bites and that was it, not even a wrasse. I know you have to take the good with the bad but man that sucked balls big time.

Power trim problems
Submitted by Hairyone on Mon, 2015-12-28 16:10Gday,
I've just uncovered the boat so I can finally get it back in the water and are having power trim problems!
First of all I pushed the power trim down switch and it made the normal noise, but nothing happened......
I tried the manual override and it still wouldn't lower.....
I cracked a couple of hydraulic hoses to get it down a bit and it started working again....so I thought....when I tried to raise it up again ,nothing? Not a sound.
It will lift using the motor raise/stow switch but not the trim switch? And once I lift it all the way to the top I cant lower it again!!!!!!
Its an old dual ram set up on a blueband 115 Mercury which I think is early 1980's with the pump/motor mounted in the boat.
I was heading in the "raise" relay (blue wire) direction, but what would stop it coming down after lifting it all the way up?
Ill try and post a couple of photos and find some better info on age and type ect............
Any ideas or direction to diagrams would be appreciated.
Cheers
Hairy

Great white spotted of parrakeat bay rottnest
Submitted by Meeuwissen on Mon, 2015-12-28 05:28was playing tourist with some friends from over east showing them some fishing/snorkelling spots. Literally heading to parrakeat nek minute rangers, parks and wildlife and police telling everyone to get out the water. So I yelled out great white? And he nodded.
It was like being an extra for jaws. Good on the authoritys for working together but my questions are is that the most effective way to go around the whole island and alert people and if you were to get bitten who's responsible???
Take in mind the penguin island drowning case?..
Which was settled for x amount of dollars.
I'm not to fussed on great white and tigers because I can't equalise so only dive shallow, found a cray in the basin, caught and released 30fish. Wrasse tarwhine some 40cm+jobs herring buffalo bream good fun on light gear.

Magic Day
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Sun, 2015-12-27 18:49Brother in Law and my brother arrived at my place at 5:50 keen for the first demersal bash in my boat.
Got to Hillarys and there is a line of cars back to the roundabout. Nevermind we get setup and are in quite quickly.
Headed north to checkout a spot I was given near Centaur and found a nice lump on the way there in about 15m so we decided to anchor up there instead.
The boys started cubing up while I got rigged up and decided to give a 30g butterfly jig a crack with the 5000 Biomaster and Catalina. Cast out, jig once, jig twice and bang my drag is screamimg and after 5 mins I've pulled in a 58cm Sambo.
While I'm measuring it my brother's rod tip is going and bang he is on and after a good fight we land a 57cm Dhu.
I land another smaller Sambo and the wind swung around pushing us off the lump and the action dies.
We decide to try for some whiting and land a few wrasse so I rig up a couple of circle hooks on my 8000 Straduc and 3-4 PE monter mesh and send one back down live and some huge shape comes up and has a go at it but I panick in the excitement and pull the fish away. I drop him back down and again this beast appears but this time I wait for it to pick uo the wrasse and when it starts moving I flick the bail arm and my rod bends in half and my drag is screaming but after a few seconds of mayhem I've dropped it never to be seen again.
The rest of the morning was spent trying to anchor over small lumps and drifting iver them with a changing wind to no avail.
All in all I'm happy with my first shot at demersals and stoked to land fish on ground I found myself once I get the hang of anchoring up and setting my drift I'll be much happier.

Best Value for money 60hp outboard
Submitted by MiSh on Sat, 2015-12-26 16:56On the market for a new outboard .
Seems the 2 stroke market hasnt had a facelift for a long time and all seems old tech except for the etecs.
The Honda/Tohatsu 4 strokes seem to have a very good power to weight ratio. Not sure on the price though
Everyone seems to rave about the Yamys but they are the most expensive (reminds me alot of toyota)

fishing esperance
Submitted by thebmac on Fri, 2015-12-25 15:03Hey guys. I am taking the boat out in esperance over when the wind drops down over the next few weeks.
I have done a little bit of research but havent found a great deal on where to start.
Was thinking of bottom bashing around some of the big drop offs near the islands.
Just wondering if anyone knows of where would be the best place to start or at least point me in the right direction?
Would trolling be any good around here??
