WA- Latest Rec Boat Fishing Survey-Facts and Figures(something else to read)

Catch the facts about what’s being caught in WA
The 2017/18 WA Recreational Boat Fishing Survey
Almost 6,000 fishers took part in our fourth major boat fishing survey, which continues to be one of the most comprehensive of its kind in Australia.
The innovative format, using log books, boat ramp surveys and remote cameras, has been used to generate catch estimates covering the entire state.
The results of this fourth survey
about 695,000 caught. School whiting was the most popular finfish, with about 259,000 caught.
More than half the overall catch was released, showing fishers are keen to fish responsibly by adhering to size and bag limits.
There were high levels of popular species released – three out of four pink snapper (116,000 fish) were returned to the water after capture,
for example, and close to two out of three West Australian dhufish (68,000 fish) were released.
Nearly two out of three blue swimmer crabs were released (667,000) by boat-based fishers and more than one in three western rock lobsters (695,000) were returned to the water.
The reasons given for these high release rates were
that the returned fish or invertebrates were too small or below the minimum size limits.
Most boat fishing was done in the West Coast Bioregion (Augusta to Kalbarri), where the kept catches of prized demersal species, including West Australian dhufish, catches were steady in 2017/18 compared with 2015/16, and higher than 2013/14 and 2011/12.
If you bought a Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence – more than 135,000 were issued in 2017/18 – you helped fund this project.

Former Docker Quentin Leach
Submitted by Jsmolly on Wed, 2020-04-08 07:14Unfortunately after a long battel with cancer in various forms, Leachy left us yesterday! Very unfortunate, as 3 young kids and wife. Played with him at a couple of clubs and was hugely talented and a real knockabout.
the only thing he did wrong was play for that second Perth team!
RIP Buddy

Demersal Ban
Submitted by big john on Sun, 2020-04-05 09:11First of all, this isn’t an original idea, saw it posted on FB.
There are bigger things at play in the world at the moment, but logistically, how hard would it be to move the demersal ban forward 5 or so months?
Keep the Cockburn Snapper ban in place as that is when the fish are actually spawning, but for the demersal ban?

We have made the tough decision to shut the doors tomorrow (Saturday the 4th of April) until it is safe to re-open, to ensure the well-being of Customers, staff and all those they come in contact with.
We thank all fisho’s that have supported us so far and hope to see you all in the near future!

Solo boating safety.
Submitted by cruzy111 on Fri, 2020-04-03 05:44Well being a bit bored and watching a few you tube videos yesterday happened to check out YBS latest offering. Now talk around town in Exmouth is Brody will be the next poppa george and end up in the drink with his boat sailing off into the sunset and him never to be seen again . I was shocked at what he did. Be safe people take solo boating seriously it is a big lonely ocean out there.

Boat Fishing for Family Food Allowed in Queensland - Government Statement
Submitted by Mick C on Tue, 2020-03-31 18:52Media Statement from Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads The Honourable Mark Bailey 4.42pm Tuesday, March 31, 2020
Fishing and essential boat use to continue
Queensland boaties can still take their boats out locally to fish or travel for essential reasons.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey clarified the rules for boaties as the evolving COVID-19 response restricted a range of activities.
“If you own a boat and want to head out in the water in your local community to fish for food this weekend, you can,” Mr Bailey said.
“If you need your boat to travel locally in your community, you can still do that.
“If you want to head out on your kayak or stand up paddle board for exercise, you still can.
“State Government boat ramps will remain open to boaties.
“We want people to continue living their lives as normally as possible under the current circumstances, but the advice of the Chief Health Officer needs to be followed.
“No one should be leaving their home unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
Mr Bailey said recent national directives limiting public gatherings to two people or less and limiting travel to essential purposes still applied.
“This isn’t a special rule to let people out on the water for non-essential reasons this weekend,” Mr Bailey said.
“There’s no reason for anyone to be taking the boat out unless it’s for essential travel to get to work, to and from your home, to local shops for provisions or catching fish for your family.
“Even then, there should be no more than two people, or immediate family members on board, and the social distancing rules everyone is being asked to follow still apply.
“Boaties should also be mindful of hygiene when putting boats in the water at public facilities.”
Mr Bailey encouraged boaties to continue monitoring the national health advice on COVID-19.
“As the nation works together to stop the spread of the virus, there is new advice daily.
“Boaties should be aware of the current restrictions on boat use, and be prepared for that advice to change again, should tougher rules to limit public movements and interaction come in.”
Hopefully the Western Australian government will issue a statement that clarifies its position in relation to this matter. There has been recent heated debate on this site with valid arguments on both sides and it would be good to have a defined position, whatever it may be.

Finally!
Submitted by Sea goat on Sun, 2020-03-29 12:11Hey guys!
new boat has finally arrived after a fairly long wait with the usual expected delays! Unfortunately with what's going on at the moment haven't really been able to get her out and blood the deck yet! Went beautifully on the test drive.
ended up with:
merc 200 4stroke with dts
trim tabs
fresh water bladder
deck wash and fresh water hose
lowrance live HD's 12 3 in 1 and 1kw transducer with chirp.
upgraded the trailer to the heavier option.
porter potty
bunk infills
storm covers
glass bulb fuel filter
extended swim platform starboard as aim to put aux bracket on port.
rocket launcher
air vents in roof
eventually will aim to get anchorcwinch etc but will have to wait for now.
Have had a lot of very good advice from members on this forum which has helped greatly during the selection process, so thanks heaps!
cant wait to get it out!
lol tempted to call it "lockdown" or "social separation"! J/k.

Craziest Boat Ramps
Submitted by Tom M on Sat, 2020-03-28 08:53Travelling the Great Ocean Road last year and came across this boat ramp, whats the craziest ramp you have seen? Looked like all 4x4's in the carpark were well maintained and boats around 5 meter mark judging by trailers.
