Cheers

The best Outboard?

The 1999 yammy 90 2 smoke is costing alot of money in fuel on the long distance's I travel fishing (25 mile out, moving from spot to spot trolling etc & 25 mile back = 80 odd litres, $100bux a trip), So I am looking to put a new motor on the back of the Southwind UB670.

A mate has a hundred Yammy 4 stroke on his same Hull- UB670, it does the same 33 knot max as my 90 only Using half the fuel.

Talking to the dealers;-  they all say I should only buy their product coz theirs is the best. I am confused, So i am asking your opinions on what you recon I should bolt on the back of the Banana boat?

Has any one got the same boat with a modern engine on the back?

What engine would you recomend?

I was on the E TEC trip for a while then seen all the government recalls because of the expolsions they were having, so put me off a bit.

Hondas 90 with the VTEC seem like a good bet I am thinking

Suzuki have brought out a new 90hp

Yamaha have 50% of the outboard market so they must be good

merc = black death i am told

Mariner is a cheap Merc

Tohatsu are just cheap

Price is all within 2 -3 grand difference so not an object, Just want the best motor

You Opinions are welcome Please...

Cheers Justin

Japanese whaling 'disappoints' Australia

AAP
November 19, 2009,

Australia has again expressed disappointment at Japan's failure to swap harpoons for science, as it embarks on its annual whaling hunt.

Four Japanese ships left port on Thursday for the Southern Ocean, where it plans to kill an unspecified number of fin whales, humpbacks and minkes for so-called scientific research.

There is a world-wide moratorium on commercial whaling, but Japan hunts whales under the banner of research.

Australia was deeply disappointed to see the Japanese government condone yet another annual slaughter, Environment Minister Peter Garrett said.

"The Australian government has said repeatedly that we do not have to kill whales to study them," he said in a statement.

"Japan has the opportunity to swap harpoons for science this summer."

Mr Garrett said the government was making an unprecedented effort to persuade Japan to stop the killing of whales, including the appointment of a special envoy.

The government has committed $32 million to non-lethal whale research.

But with the Japanese ships already headed south, opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt said the government had failed to back up its election promise to hold the Japanese to account.

"This is the third summer of whaling since (Prime Minister) Kevin Rudd and Peter Garrett led Australians to believe they would stop the practice," he said.

"Their promised international court action goes down as one of the biggest broken promises of this government."

But Mr Garrett said the government had delivered on the promise, which was to collect evidence for possible legal action.

"That option remains on the table," he said.

The government was also working through other reforms, including giving greater powers to the International Whaling Commission "to make it a conservation-focused organisation, not one that simply counts dead whales".

"We will continue to pull out all stops in our diplomatic and other efforts," Mr Garrett said.

Japan issued its own permits for the slaughter of 950 whales in the 2008/2009 season.

It has not yet applied for permits this year.

Nav Hazard - Port Geo Marina

Just in case anybody missed it ......

Temporary Notice to Mariners

Mariners are advised that, due to the accretion of moving seagrass wrack, some
areas of the Port Geographe Marina entrance channel have shallowed significantly.
The affected area extends from the outer entrance of the marina channel to the
start of the inner canals.
There is a moving seagrass wrack layer in this area which may vary significantly in
thickness and position over short time frames.
Further details including a recent depth sounding plan of the area may be obtained
from the Department of Transport website at;

http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/imarine/19103.asp

Signage for legal sizes and bag limits - I asked Fisheries where they have gone

As I have had a gutful of watching rec fisho's taking baby 10-20cm skippy and tailor home from Ocean Reef and Hillarys rock walls, I wrote an email to Fisheries to ask why they don't bring back those sign boards with species, legal sizes and bag limits?

Here is their response.  What do you think???

"Thank you for your email of 12 November regarding signage for recreational fishing at Hillarys.

The Department of Fisheries has primarily used brochures and the internet to inform people of size limits and species id.

If one size limit or bag limit changes on a sign there is a need to change every sign with the correct information. Given the rate of change with some management controls, using signage to convey this type of information has not been the best approach.

Fisheries officers are stationed at Hillarys Marina and should you see any illegal activity please report this to the fishwatch number - 1800 815 507. Even if a Fisheries Officer can not attend immediately, this information is useful in planning future patrols.

Thank you for making the Department aware of this issue."

swan/canning fishing

hi guys

went out with a few mates on sunday to canning bridge. nothing much to report but my mate got a small bream on a switchblade.

apart from that just blowies, we saw heaps of fish: grunter, whiting, we think a few tailor and a few small bream.

so with not much success there we walked up to the scouts jetty. again nothing to report.

With us all wanting to catch a fish we walked to rookwood jetty.

as we were crossing the bridge we saw about 200 medium tarwhine.

so we raced down the steps and started chucking lures at them but they werent hungry.

when we arrived at rookwood we all had a few casts with nothing biting

Then we tried all around the rock walls around there with a few follow ups but no hook ups.

we had 10 minutes left so we decided to go back to rookwood

on my first cast i got hooked up to something big, went for a short run directly away from me pulling line at a rapid pace, then went for a even bigger run up towards the end of the jetty and snapped my 9lb line.

was using a soft vib the whole time

Any ideas of what the fish could be?

i think it was either a big bream or a small mulloway

Mullet

I was just wondering do any of you guys know if there is an anual Mullet run over here in WA? If there is what time of year does it happen?Or is it just a Salmon run here.

Looking for suggestions for an overhead surf rod

I am hoping to pick up a Shimano Trinidad 20DC overhead reel soon, but I am wondering what rod I should put it on.

I would prefer something at least 12 foot long and able to handle throwing lures through to medium-sized live baits.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot, Colin

$4000 abalone

This week's Cambridge Post reports that a Mt Claremont man must pay more than $4000 after being caught with more than four times the permitted amount of abalone.  The man was approached by Department of Fisheries officers at Mettams Pool in Trigg in November last year.  He tipped his bag of abalone on to a rock - the officers counted 90.  The bag limit is 20 per day per fisher.

Someone found some more tailor

I hear a lad and a lady from Fishwrecked did very nicely on the tailor this morning. I have seen a picture and there are some very fine fish in the haul.

I think they were making the most of the tailor run before thefront comnes through and blows the fishing out for a few days.
