What is your favourite lure colour?
Submitted by Colin Hay on Tue, 2009-06-02 19:38Hi all, I have had to be around home quite a bit lately and in my spare time I have decided to do something fruitful and get back into making some home made lures.
I was wondering what everyone's favourite lure colour or colour combinations are, for:
1) Mackeral;
2) GTs;
3) Tuna;
4) Salmon; and
5) Tailor
I know there are a lot of "sales and marketing" colours associated with many of the lures today, so if you could describe that colour or colours as close to the standard "rainbow" colours it would be greatly appreciated.
Personally, I love the old red and white combo, or a gold and brown combo.
Looking forward to your input,
Many thanks, Colin Hay

Retirement fishing trip advice
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2009-06-02 14:23Hi Crew,
I have just received the email below, I figure the best way to respond is to send a link to this thread with replies from you guys. Advice would be great.
Cheers,
Adam
I hope you can help because I would like some fishing advice. I am retiring at the end of 2010 and sometime in 2011 I plan to take my 12 year old and my 18 year old sons on a sports fishing holiday over to Western Australia. We live in Melbourne and plan to tow a boat across by four wheel drive. I have to buy a powerboat, probably about 5.5m to 6.00m and I will do that with my super, anyway what’s left of it by then (wife’s not too keen on the idea but she’s not coming anyway).
I’ve got an old army mate living in Perth so will probably visit him and start our 3 month fishing tour from there. We will take our time and head north, stopping at places where we can catch a fish. Certainly I hear that Coral Bay, Exmouth and Kalbarri are good fishing locs. We are prepared to head north as far as Broome, Derby and Wyndham to chase fish and then come home through NT and so on back to Melbourne. Can you suggest any MUST FISH places for us?
We practice catch and release and when I want a feed of fish I buy some from the fish n chip shop. For the past 6 months I have begun to stockpile my fishing tackle with bits and pieces, i.e., lures, rods, reels, etc. I’ve got a great barra rod on lay buy at the moment. I’ve got surf rods, boat rods with overhead reels and lots of light tackle. Is there anything I should take with me? Cast net maybe? Do I need a fishing license? Can you advise me?
Best wishes

Yanchep Lagoon
Submitted by Ganged on Tue, 2009-06-02 12:34Hi guys/girls
Went to Yanchep Lagoon yesterday and fished in the lagoon looking at the reef. There was a strong current going from left to right, is this current always there and does it matter where you stand.
Fishing was slow got 1 KG, 2 Taylor a rock cod and a few Whiting between 2 of us. Had a few big bites but i think my technique leaves something to be desired. Got there about 6:45am and left at 2pm. Weather was a beaut would love a few more days like that.

Billfish Shootout Day 3
Submitted by jay_burgess on Mon, 2009-06-01 22:03Well day 3 had the worst conditions for the comp, was pretty lumpy out on the water with patches of heavy rain. The results reflected the conditions out there today. We managed to land one sailfish. Can't remember the results from today, I was too tired really but it was like twenty something sails and two marlin. Champion boat for the comp was Trophy Hunter on 5500 points.

Japanese Warranty
Submitted by JoRn on Mon, 2009-06-01 16:41Just havin a bit of a winge -
I purchased a fisherman pliers from Plats last october i think it was like 300 bucks, anyway i use it a fair bit when i go fishing but i havent mishandled it in anyway.
Anyway, about 2 months ago i went to open my box only to find the tip of the pliers broken. I told Plats about this and they told me to send it back because it was "Covered" under warranty....however there will be likely to be a cost and i had to send it back to them which i had to pay for it.
Fair enough, I said could u just order me the tips and i will replace them msyelf to saving shipping cost - no can do was the reply.
Well 2 months on got an email from Plats stating my pliers are ready and if i want them back i got to pay like 100 AUD ( fee to fix the pliers additional shipping cost, postage and handling fee). Thats just ridiculous...apparently that is Japanese Warranty - its covered but you still have to pay.
Before I get blasted with comments - you should buy locally blah blah blah - you cant buy it locally!
Oh well just giving heads up if you decide to play from plats and or japan. Ive purcahsed quite a bit of stuff from plats and japan and this is the first time something has gone wrong.

Billfish Shootout Day 2
Submitted by jay_burgess on Sun, 2009-05-31 20:37We had a bit better day today but still no joy. Raised our first sail in the first half hour but he wouldn't take a bait. Headed over to where some other fish were reported but didn't have any luck so we headed back to where we raised the first fish and raised another three, hooking two but failing to land either. So total for the day was 4 raised, 2 hooked and none landed. 55 sailfish and 4 black marlin were landed today which brings the shootout tally to 111 sails and 5 black marlin.

Coupla questions
Submitted by Wrassassin on Sun, 2009-05-31 19:20Hey all
Firstly just wondering if someone can point me in the direction of a good tackle shop around the landsdale area, don't mind a bit of a drive.
Secondly i'm new to perth boat fishin but i have heard than fishin in winter you don't need to go as deep to get at decent bottom fish.
Wondering how wide i need to go, not that the distance matters.
I'm thinking of heading out of two rocks.
I was just going to head out to the reef on the chart just in from where the shelf drops off in about 50 metres and have a look around?
Thanks for any help.

Billfish Shootout Day 1
Submitted by jay_burgess on Sun, 2009-05-31 17:26Well we had a pretty average day, raised our first sailfish in the first 10 minutes of trolling but he was gone before we could switch a bait. Thought it was looking good but didn't raise our next fish until about 12.30 which bill whacked one of our trolled baits and then was gone. After that we didn't see anything for the remainder of the day. There were 57 billfish tagged on day one, 56 sails and 1 black marlin (if my memory is correct)..
Will give an update for day two when we get back tonight, heard a report of a tagged striped marlin on the radio today so it will be good to confirm that.. plus a few more black marlin caught today compared with yesterday... and the usual sails.

Rod Building?????????
Submitted by mako magic on Sat, 2009-05-30 14:09Well years ago i know personally i used to do alot of rod building, pretty much for myself and a few friends, mainly as a hobby and to build the colours i wanted.
Now the thing is that these days there are less and less people doing it, partly because of the good quality rods available at a good price these days and not really the need to buy custom rods and also that it seems less and less components and blanks available in shops
I have started getting back into it again, mainly since i am doing all the rod repairs at the shop and just think its something that people really should get into.
So would more people like to get into it if the parts are available or its just in the too hard basket for most??
