A little fun with Carrot stiks and what next.
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2009-06-08 09:18Reading Colins bit about his new nano fibre Carrot stik I thought what next. Maybe a Celery Stik. Just thought we could have some fun with what next and what we would call it. A Banana Bender etc.
I am sure we could come up with some funny names for nano technology rods.
Some fun because the wind is bloody blowing its box off up here and fishing is not on the cards offshore.

Good morning at Hillarys
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sun, 2009-06-07 11:06I took Doug and his son Stephen down to one of my favourite spots at Hillarys Marina this morning. What a cracker of a morning. Hardly any wind and blue skies - and the water looked perfect.
We arrived at about 5.45 am to find the Hillarys north wall pretty deserted apart from one guy fishing on the the disabled platform.
We headed out to my spot and soon started tossing chunks of mulie out in the hope that the skippy were around.
As per normal the action came on just as the sun was coming up and Stephen hooked a nice little pinky.
He was on fire after that and proceeded to land at least half a dozen small pinkies and twice that number in skippys - some of them a pretty decent size.
Doug did alright as well, landing a few small pinkies and three of or four skippy - all great fun on really light gear.
My normal, unweighted skipper killer rig was letting me down as it appeared that the fish were all feeding on the bottom, so once I twigged onto that and swapped to a running sinker rig I finally managed to land three skippy and a tarwhine.
None of them were all that big, but they were good fun on the new Carrot Stix I was testing for the first time.

What an awesome rod. It is so light, but can it throw a small bait a long way. Nice and strong for its size it is also extremely flexible and allows you to feel even the tiniest nudge from the fish.
We saw a number of interesting sites during the morning as well, including a sizeable seal which came straight up to the rocks we were fishing on and just sat offshore hoping we would throw it some fish. A resident Osprey also managed to grab one of the small pinkies Stephen had returned to the water before it could swim away.
There were heaps of boats heading out, including one poor bunch that didn't even make it of the harbour before having to be towed back.
All in all, a great morning. I can't wait to do it again.
All the best, Colin Hay

Has anyone tried a Carrot Stik rod?
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sat, 2009-06-06 21:09They are made from 30% graphite and 70% nano carrot fibre.
I picked one up at the Tackle Shack today. It is one serious rod
I know it sounds crazy, but these rods have won numerous awards, including one at Icast.
I am going to give it a twirl tomorrow. I can't wait.

What should I save up for?
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2009-06-05 15:44I have finally given up the “durries”, also known as the “coffin nails”, “oily rags”, “smokes”, etc.
So I am looking forward to having a bit of extra cash (At $12 a pack it should add up to a bit of extra cash).
I am putting the money I am saving into a special (aka secret, not known to the better half) account. What do you think I should save up for fishing gear wise.
All input would be apreciated, Colin Hay

Do Fish have colour vision
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-06-05 10:11I looked at the bright pakula pusher Adam had with his blackie and it made me think. I am a science type person but with humans and i know that most animals apart from Primates dont see colours. I was wondering if anybody know if fish see colours or just patterns. Maybe the colour of lures is designed to catch us and not the Fish. I hope someone can answer this.

Alutecnos Jigging Rods... Which one ... and what reel?
Submitted by Bluetonic on Thu, 2009-06-04 22:00I'm looking at buying another Jigging outfit. At the moment I have a Ryobi Metaroyal 5000A Safari spooled with 50lb braid on a Shimano Jigwrex S526. Absolutely awesome outfit but I want something lighter as well.
I have been looking at the Alutecnos jigging rods and see they have the FRJ006LG (6/12lb) that supports a spinfisher type reel and handles 80/170g jigs. They also have mainly overhead jigging sticks and if I was to go there the FRJ015SP (15/30lb) that handles 150/270g jigs looks ok as well.
My questions are:
1. Are the overhead jigging sticks (in this case the FRJ015SP (supports 150/270g jigs)as good as the ones designed for spinfisher reels? (eggbeater reels) If so, what would be a good reel to match to this stick? And where is my best place to buy this stick?
2.If I was to go with the FRJ006LG stick, (Supports 80/170g jigs) What would be the best reel to match this outfit and again, where would my best bet be in purchasing this rod? I'm rather inclined to go with this outfit but await members comments.

Popper's
Submitted by Big Fella fishn on Thu, 2009-06-04 13:10May sound like a stupid question, but can i be informed by a few of you proffesional lure user's out there, the best way to retrieve popper's. I have only recently bought a couple after reading and hearing people catching tailor on them. From what ive read the best places to use these is over reefy country and when there's a fair bit of white water - is this true or false?. Do you have any success with them in calm conditions? Could you also recommend the best size and possibly colour's that might be to the liking of tailor or salmon?? Sorry so many questions but i have been a thru n thru bait fisherman in the past, and have only started using lures recently.
Cheers!

Bit of excitement at freo traffic bridge last night
Submitted by tailor marc on Thu, 2009-06-04 08:40Well looks like it may be life number 4 i have saved.
I was driving around freo takin pics with my new lens and decided to pull into my favorite fishin spot in freo (traffic bridge)
Walked down the steps till i got to the bottom and noticed a girl right next to the 3ft wide plank thet goes out to the middle of the bridge. She was by herself and talking to herself and waving arms around (not all there).
I walked back to the car and put camera away and went back down to try get her away from the walkway.
I approched her and said hello, no reply just grunts and moans. As i stepped towards her she backed up and made a move for the plank.
I ended up sub duing her and got brian to call police, she broke free and made a run for the stairs and strait infront of traffic. 5 min later she was walkin back and down the steps towards the walkway and mutterd something about ending it. She ened up walking the plank in the dark when police arrived and i took them out to her. I walked police out on the plank to where she was sitting. The police called water police incase she fell or jumped. Police brought her back after alot of talking and ended up taking her away but she kept saying " I want to go to the water. It was soooo freaky! Police congratulated me and Brian and said any longer her out there and she would of gone in. One slip there and its all over! I would hate to think what might of happend if she were still there alone.
