Cruise Craft / Bar Crusher

So in the market for a new rig and spent a few hours in Bunbury today going over my final 2 choices, Cruise Craft 625HT and BarCrusher 670HT. I know they are completely different boats and not really comparable, but I'm after something with a bit of luxury for when the family come down from Perth like river/canal cruises and the Cruise Craft fits the bill. Also want a boat which will get me deep offshore for fishing being the BarCrusher. When I saw the 670HT today I was a little disappointed with the deck space and vision out the windscreen. The Cruise Craft on the other hand had a noticeable bigger deck space and better finish being a glass boat. I've only ever had ally boats so im used to the harshness of the ride but how are the Cruise Crafts deep offshore when the wind and swell pick up? Any feed back on either boat? Cruise Craft is about 10k more and at the top end of the budget so want to make sure it's worth it. Cheers

Cruisecraft

Fri, 2016-11-25 19:48

I have a 685Cruisecraft that I have used for the last 3 or 4 years for Abrolhos trips with the kids.
Good ride and accom, but not the best for a fishing boat.

Have done many rough runs to and from without great discomfort though, kids tucked up in the cabin sometimes at 20 knots with a seabreeze.

Easy enough and solid enough that Ive had my 11 year old drive it home 32 miles with a good following sea without concern.

My personal preference for my boating though is an ally boat, however by definition for me thats not one with a fancy paint job.

Suprised

Sun, 2016-11-27 19:06

Suprised to hear that, not a fan of Bar crusher in principal due to their business practices but they certainly are copied off a well renowned riding boat.
I have been on T Bones and it rides beautifully, on a par with my CC though ally is always going to be noisier.

I can only go on the time a 575 Barcrusher went flying past me heading out of Busso just out of the marina. I have a 5m Seafarer and was sitting on  28 knots and it was around 1.7m and 8 knots.

When we left the bay I very quickly passed old mate and he was soon a spec behind me. Who knows though, maybe he decided to start sounding around at 15 knots once it got rough...

670HT

Fri, 2016-11-25 22:05

Big fan of the bar crushers having added 80hrs on a 670HT this year. Haven't had it out in big swell (2m+) but it handles wind chop and following seas easily enough. Have fished four people but three is easier to manage. Saying that, have had three divers and gear including three bottles each for approx total weight of 600kg's and we were able to gear up no worries and push a decent speed back in to beat the seabreeze. I'm not tall by any stretch but can see out windows in chair or standing ok.

Havent been on the water in a CruiseCraft but the one rig I got in to give a once over on land impressed a lot. Boat was 9 yrs old and was immaculate with good setup/layout. Can only imagine they've gotten better in the later models. I suppose it comes down to what you want to use the boat for most but I cant think of you having a bad day out in either.

Good luck, happy hunting.

Just to cause more confusion have a look at Surtees similar to barcrusher I believe Surtees  used to make hulls for them. when I looked I thought the finish was better welds paint etc also price came fully optioned dec wash, live bait tank etc. Dealer in Midland Aqusports Marine owner Nick looked after me.

I think what happened is Barcrusher assembled hulls for Surtees.
They discovered Surtees didnt have design rights registered here and just copied and started making them, or something along those lines

Sat, 2016-11-26 16:30

Yeah looked at the Surtees and yes same hull as BarCrusher. Wasn't a fan of the fitout on the Surtees as the 12" sounder I wanted would need to be mounted on top of dash as no room to flush mount and also only came standard with pedistool seat mounts, they should be standard with storage boxes underneath and of course it's all extra. For the 6.5 GameFisher worked out around 5k more for the same hull bet less features...

Sat, 2016-11-26 10:42

I can't comment on a barcrusher but can on a cruise craft. I have the 685 outsider and always fish 3 without difficulty. I fish up to 70 kms out when chasing deep species. I have always been happy with the performance especially in big waters. When travelling into a short sharp chop around a meter it can be uncomfortable but that can be said for many boats I guess, just adjust speed for comfort. Predictable and safe in a following sea.

build quality on CC is unquestioned BUT they are a heavy boat and you need 3.5 tonne trailer capacity when full of fuel and gear but that's why they have such a presence on the water.

Bar Crusher 670HT

Sat, 2016-11-26 12:59

I think the finish is a bit better nowadays than 5 years ago, but support from manufacturer has been great (when someone stole some stuff). No issues with the boat, except a bit of paint loss around bung plugs and then minor leakage. Great for fishing and plenty of deck space for 3-4 people at back. I don't have an issue with the visibility through the windscreen, but not really that happy with dashboard angle. I think the ride is much better than most people give it credit for. But clearly a 3T fibreglass or 3T ally boat will ride better in rough conditions, but how often does a person go out fishing in 20knots+ winds with 2-3m+ seas?
Much easier to tow a 2T boat than 3T+ boat, hence my choice of Barcrusher over some other boats.

Sat, 2016-11-26 14:37

Cheers mate, the new models now come with the dash more vertical so the sounder can be seen from the back of the boat which is a big plus, have just sold my 580 Formosa so any newer ally boat would no doubt be a better ride.

Sat, 2016-11-26 18:31

Cruisecraft hands down for me I have 685 explorer and love it very little to pick wrong with it, new ones are even better than mine. Fishes great and good stability at rest rides well have towed it to Onslow on a number of occasions and tows great. Big boat and you do notice the weight but tracks well under tow. We beach launch it at Cervantes but use a tractor to make things easy.  Dad has a Surtees 5.5 great boat in its own right very functional almost military in its design I like it but doesn't have the stability and  not as refined n my opinion

685 explorer

Sun, 2016-11-27 05:49

i have the cc 685 explorer (not the hard top). I had a 670. Coraline before this.

The cc rides much better and in a follwing sea performs awesome. It's a bit wetter than the coraline but probably because I go everywhere 5 knots faster.

i regularly fish 3 without problem and have been out in some heavy seas/winds.

Im a big fan.

ive never been on a bar crusher but was weighing up that option when I got the cc.

for family boating the bar crusher had too many sharp edges for my liking.

I remeber the foot rest looking particularly bad. I could imagine how many times it would wipe a shin out.

the cab in the cc is great, the kids regularly go play or sleep in there while out on the water.

wont be too many places even in bad conditions you can't go

if your worried about being able to handle rough water I reckon my pissy little glass boat does alright in rougher water than comparable and even bigger Ali boats

BarCrusher 670HT 105k plus around 6k for a Simrad system. 200hp Suzuki fly by wire

If your going to spend

Sun, 2016-11-27 09:36

If your going to spend upwards of 120K there are plenty of options about.

The 650/675/680 Haines hunters are in that price bracket, it would be worthwhile going for a run in one of those before making a descision.

You could even get a custom 6.4m Moda custom boat for that price. Make it how you want and it would be a killer set up.

730 bar crusher

Sun, 2016-11-27 15:14

As rob mentioned earlier, my crusher rides as well as you can get out on an ally boat. You will never get away from the noise, but that's why I got a big stereo system :)
Some people say they are a "wet ride" and the way that I drive, mine is no exception, but im sitting in the captains chair and I stay dry, so who cares.
Mine is about 2 years old, and have enough room to flush mount a lowrance HDS12 on the dash, with a bracket mounted simrad NSS12 behind it. plus all the switches, garmen gauges and normal crap.
Have kept an eye on bar crusher and some of the newer boats they are putting out have some nice options that I wsi hi had. But next boat will end up going a MODA I imagine. Have chatted with them already, and for the product the sell for that price, I imagine you would be hard pressed to beat them.

Sun, 2016-11-27 18:44

Biased opinion here but not really. Cruise craft all the way mate, fish offshore in comfort mate, good live well, kill tank, deck wash. HT gives the protection and the ride for their size is unreal. I had a 625 outsider and rode as well if not better than yank tanks at 23-25ft. 200hp on the back and cruise at 28 knots at 4200rpm using 32l hour. I only sold mine so I can get a centre console to fish line class solo. Loved it and will no doubt regret selling it soon. I was regularly 50Nm offshore in her with 4 on board.

Sun, 2016-11-27 21:51

Jesus for that kind of coin you'd want to live on the thing or at least use it once a week to get some value. A lot of $ sitting around other wise, if I ever upgrade I'll seriously look at a 5.5m Surtees 2nd hand. Look forward to seeing what you get mate and how it's decked out.

I got a 730 ht crusher and love it...been out in absolute foul and it smashes it... I seriously doubt wether I would want to be on another boat safe as. Haven't been on a cc but sounds ok one thing I don't like about my boat is hard to get large transducers in not much room for wet box ect  if you could spend a bit more and go a 730 you won't regret it, good luck with your purchase

Tough choice as they're both

Tue, 2016-11-29 20:59

Tough choice as they're both very nice boats. I had a CC575 Outsider with 130HP Yammie but I'm sure the 625HT will be much better. Great layout, excellent build quality and it will be a better option for family days, cruising and even Rotto overnighters. The BC come's into it's own as a good offshore fishing rig but IMO probably a bit rough for family cruising and overnighters. As an all-rounder, personally I prefer glass boats over ally but I think I'd prefer the BC for serious offshore fishing or towing up north. Resale on both would be very good.

670HT Barcrusher

Thu, 2016-12-01 08:59

I own a 670HT and love it. I have just ticked over 200hrs in it in 14 months. I have towed it to Shark Bay and driven over to Dirk Hartog for a weekend and been miles out past Rottnest and have always felt secure in it. Sure it bangs and slaps at times in the really rough stuff but I just fill the ballast and lock it in using the "Balast Flap" really makes the boat stable and ride improves greatly.
The dark tinted windows make it a bit difficult to see through at night so I intend to put clear glass in the lower section of the middle front window. The 200 suzuki on the back gets me 40knots flat out and trimmed up. I have a bracket mounted Simrad NSS 12 on the dash and heaps of room around it for other digital gauges etc. The boat tows beautifully and I launch it solo 80% of the time, either by drive on/off or handled by ropes, no probs either way.
I fish and dive the shit out of it and love it.
good luck with your choice. If you are Waikiki/ Rockko way or willing to travel drop me a line and I'll take you for a spin so you have a more informed opinion..

trim tabs

Thu, 2016-12-22 19:06

I've had a CruiseCraft 625 for the last 5 years.

Awesome boat, amazing fishing platform and I wouldn't have anything else, but before you put it in the water put trim-tabs on it.  Trust me, these boats need trim-tabs, otherwise they bang like hell in a bit of cross-wind.  Tabs completely transform the ride.  It's like night and day.    Go 12 x 9's.

cheers,

Steve

Good stuff

Fri, 2016-12-23 19:37

Good to hear, it will be an awesome fishing machine.  They're not the softest riding boats due to the deadrise and beam, however if you keep it vertical with the tabs it will ride very well.  I had mine for 2 years before putting tabs on and what an enormous improvement.  There's always a compromise.  Where they shine though is stability at rest.  I've had three guys on one side dragging a marlin over the side with hardly any noticeable roll.  First boat I've had where I haven't been planning the next one.
