Spearfishing....

Tue, 2011-08-09 02:04

Gday mate... No help with Exy locations but I will be there on 22nd and 23rd and I too have just started doing a bit of free diving with the gun, so If you would be keen to meet and try our luck somewhere let me know.. I will try and get some tips on places to try....  maybe one of the Exmouth FW guys would be kind enough to show us a couple of spots for a morning in exchange for a carton or something along those lines????

I've found the locals to be

Tue, 2011-08-09 14:37

I've found the locals to be more than willing to give you a heads up on where to go looking for a fish, just don't expect them to let go of the good spots. The guys at Bluewater are really good, I usually spend my money with them and have a bit of a chat about what's been biting and where. Another good one is Google Earth, use it to have a look around the place for good looking water or structure.

For guys new to diving, you'd be wasting your time trying water any deeper than 8-10 meters, I've personally had good success in waters around the 4-6 meter mark for Trout,Bluebone,Chinaman etc. In saying that I've got a boat and usually only spear in the gulf. I THINK you can spear in designated recreational areas anywhere along the Gulf up to the Tantabiddi boat ramp, HOWEVER , You can only take certain species in certain areas, so have a look at the guidelines carefully.

Hey Hamo, ye i will definitely be hitting up the locals to see if they can point us in the right direction! ye i will definitely look into where i can and cant... I've got a 17ft half cab i will be taking up, ive fished up therer once before but the bloody wind was up for the whole 5 days so only got to fish shallow on the west side and havent been into the gulf yet... i will try sound around some shallower reef in 5-8 m. Any other tips u could give me Hamo?? really would love to get my first trout.

If anyone else will be up at that time or locals keen to catch up for a fish (or drink) haha please hit me up!

I'll shoot you off a PM mate.

I'll shoot you off a PM mate. Have a look at Deepwaters thread and the fish he came across, I'm confident you'll get your first trout - Just remember they'll look bigger underwater than they are, don't want to end up with an undersized fish on your spear.

Hey freshsquid, I lived in

Thu, 2011-08-18 16:43

Hey freshsquid, I lived in exxy for 6 years and did a lot of spearing for trout you should have no worries getting a few. The gulf would be your best bet anywhere between just south of learmonth jetty all the way up to bundegi boat ramp will produce some nice specimens. Just head out a couple hundred meters off the beach with someone with Polaroid sunnys on lookout and you should come across some nice bombies. The best spots I have found were just north and south of learmonth and straight out from the navy base. I wouldn't worry at all about how long you can hold your breath, some of my best trouties have come from 4-6m its just a matter of skipping from bombie to bombie to find that monster. Just be mindful there are a couple small marine sanctuaries around bundegi and a bit south which should be marked with bouys Hope that helps.. pm me if you have any more questions.
