First boat - centre console, walkabout or full cabin?

Hey all! So after building boats for other people for 10 years Its time to build one for myself. I've never owned a boat and have very little boating experience so looking to you guys for some opinions on which design to go for.

Thinking of something around the 6m mark with a 150hp four stroke. Like the idea of having a small cabin I could sleep in every now and again but not sure how useable it would be on a ~6m boat? Although it would be good to have a small cabin the boat will be mainly used for fishing so thinking a centre console or a walkabout could be the way forward? Must be annoying being on a boat fishing and not being able to move to the front of the boat if thats where the fish wants to take you.

Would be good to get some input from people that have spent time on different designs who know the pro's and cons pretty well!

everyone has their own

everyone has their own preference regarding fishing, but one thing with a 6 meter CC, is it will be very difficult to sleep on it anywhere.

Bummer if heading to Rotto for a couple of days etc

I currently have a 6m CC and would love something with a cabin for weekenders.

My boat is brilliant for fishing though now I have a family, there is no protection nor a dry spot when it blows. Plus when it is cold you just want a screen...

my ex bro in law had a 7m walk around which was a great boat, though a 6400 trailcraft sportsCab what I want. I still intend to keep the fishing boat.

Thanks for the input guys! Good point about not being able to sleep on a CC and also great point about wanting a screen when it's cold. I'm the type of fisherman that will sit on a rock wall in 40km winds and torrential rain so will be getting myself into situations where a screen will come in handy!

What do you reckon to the 6.1m walkabout here - cncmarine.com.au

Could anyone recommend any other plans to look at? Need a company that will sell just the plans and cutting files as I will get material and material cut at work.

Custom Build

if your designing the boat and leaning towards a centre/walk around, it should be possible to have a walk around cab with forward double bed area (king single), with a reduced rear deck area, sketch up a few layouts that you think will work and get a marine engineer/designer look at it. I think a design like this would suit solo or 2 fishos.

What you must remember is

What you must remember is that opinions are like a$$holes. Everyone has one but some stink.

Searching google images, there are pictures of one for sale on boatsales. Interesting looking hull shape based off the renderings.

Personally a fan of the Jackman hull shapes.

Walkarounds are certainly the best of both worlds. You cannot beat the ability to walk a obnoxious fish around and around the boat, though you may sacrifice some "living" quarters when throwing that into a 6.1m boat.

I am after a 6.4m sports cab as I feel that we could fit two adults and two kids in the bow, hence the want for bigger sleeping areas, still with the big deck, though it's horses for courses.

7m boat by in law had was a great boat, designed off a Chivers hull.

a fair few guys have done kit boats on this site so I am sure they will chip in with their designs and ideas.

The 6.5 cnc walkaround has decent compromise. A few of them around the place so would be possible to have a look at one in the flesh before committing. They go fine with a 150 as well.

Go check out oceanic fabrication in henderson they might have couple of 6m+ hull to look at.

I have one of thier 7.5m hardtops, they use the billy plug design and might be able to help you with plans.

I'll go have a look in the week. They are just down the road from where I work. Looking at the study plans of the 6.1 walkaround from cncmarine the cabin is only about 1400 long so a bit cramped even for 1 to sleep in. Really dont want to compromise on deck space so a cc may be the way to go. Or a bigger boat. Best to go and have a look at some like you say though!

 Another qurstion for you

Another qurstion for you guys - how much deck space is ideal for 2 people fishing with the option of squeezing 4 on for the odd day? Looks like with a 6.5m walkaround I still wont be able to sleep on it and will be hard going for more than 2 fisho's?

Don't underestimate the

Don't underestimate the shelter you get from a walkaround. Storage for gear etc. Can always lay the swags across the deck for overnighters and then your swags are in the cab and out of the way/ staying dry for the day.
