My mother in law has just evacuated from Cope place Kelmscott, The fire is in the Brookton valley between Kelmscott and Roleystone, she's on her way to our house but from what she has relayed to us there are houses lost, My mother in Law was told by Fesa to go as it was just too dangerous too stay.
I live in Beckenham and saw the other fire that goodz is talking about, not sure where that one is, looked to be maybe wilson area but not sure.
Looks like the fireys are going to have a busy night.

I'm up in Heren Hill, Swan
I'm up in Herne Hill, Swan Valley. We have not slept in 36 hrs and still on evacuation alert, with them now calling for the road next to us to be alert & go!
This is a big fire front and they stopped using fixed winged water bombers cause of the high winds to make it worse, BUT now with three other fires in the metro area and homes lost in Rolliestones, the Fire Fighters are stretched to the limit. To make things worse, no power since this morning and I really need a cup of strong coffee now.
God help the bastards that started these fires, I would put a noose around their necks easily.

Good luck to everyone in the fire zones. Sounds like one might have been caused by powerlines and another accidentally by an angle grinder. Not sure which ones though. Heard an update from FESA. Stay safe everyone.

yeah this morning they said
yeah this morning they said debry from the high winds hit a power line and started the main blaze near the Red Hill tip. But Chittering fire is susoect.
how we ended up with five major fire in one go is scary. Every one said they had too many helitankers and fixed wings this year, but now we can see that we could have used double the amount with ease.
We had three heli-tankers ( smaller ones) yesterday, as we lost the two big ones to the higher risk Roeliestones fire.
We really need those big air bombers the yanks use, the little fixed winged planes can hit a spot fire on a small house, but can't dent the type of blazes we had this weekend.

finally got power back this morning.
and my first mug of coffee in hand,
luckily the wind has dropped off so chance for fire-brigade and volunteer fire fighters to get the fire under control now.
Fire moved down the ridge last night, but was mostly parallel to us about a kilometer away

Good to hear
So, has most of the risk passed in the Herne Hill/Red Hill area?
I bet that coffee is tasting pretty damn good.
Mum and Dad still live in Herne Hill and they were keeping an eye on it from a safe distance.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

risk still there for the
risk still there for the north section of Herne Hill and East of Campersic.
Houses / small holdings from Oak Over to Stock rd on Alert for now, as fire is still burning in patches above quarry / concrete works.
Wind is the factor again, if it swings more Easterly, then the risk increases for us.
Just can't get the body to sleep yet, and yes that first cup of coffee was awwwwsum

My thoughts also
read some fires have been contained but not letting anybody in for safety, trees falling down, power poles etc. but one main fire is still out of control in the Kelsmcott shire.
Glad you are ok Tony, thoughts for everybody that have lost their homes or damaged, terrible, I also read where one fire was caused by a power pole, somebody using a grinder and maybe the third is looking suspicioius.
Take care everybody that lives in the Hills, I love the hills but wouldn't live there for quids. Take care all

understand all that
its almost as if you need to do a risk assessment for every thing,[water handy ,fire retardent] driving a truck in the out back, using a geny in a house, changing tyres on the side of the road none are deliberate acts but they can be costly for yourself and others

Well your on the money Uncle. Every welding job I do for Halliburton ,Risk assement ,HW permit and a fire watch with extinguisher in hand. If I don't do any of these I'm liable for damage. But common sense must prevail. Grinding on a hot day near bush Hmmm makes you wonder. I hope there's an appeal for these people as well. Only too happy to give some dough or whatever they need.

Listenig to the radio this
Listenig to the radio this morning and people complaining they had no warning, why did they not save more house etc, it got my blood boiling.
The joys of people living in a nanny state.
They have no idea of “cause and effect”, how to take charge of their own safety and of course the Stupid Green Experiments with forest and fire management,
rule 1: own the fuel, and you own the fire
rule 2: fire breaks are big dead open pieces of ground, yes they are unsightly, but they work. My not look nice on the ksy line, but a 300m wide fire break can be protected. A 10m wide one is pissing into a firestorm.
rule 3: if you live rural, be prepared for fires. Own a genset and pump connected to a large water tank. Have a mobiel fire fighting rig, they only cost $700. You got a million dollar house, put some money into protecting it folks. Just like airbags & safety belts in a car, if you never need to use them, they still a good investment for the day you did need them.
You have to be able to survive alone
rule 4: urban housing designs don't work in bush fire areas. Eves need to covered, no open areas of exposed painted wood etc. One hot ember in the roof line = one house gone.
When will we learn!!! 40 years of bad fire disasters in Australia and still we live in a dream world.
sorry for the hard insensitive words folks. But we live in Swan Valley, in the areas burnt on Herne Hill /Red Hill.
We were prepared and so where many around us, not one house lost! Same last year.
Build for fires, don't let fires force you to rebuild!

why werent more houses saved?
while yes the firebreaks would have helped but when a fire is getting fanned with gusty easterly winds on the wrong side of surburbia houses will get lost (this being the roleystone fire). fire crews had three major fires to contend with and water bombers had to stay down because of winds. not just this but embers were raining down upto 500 meters away from the front. the roleystone fire started at 11:42 and they think the first house went up at 11:55 not to much time to react.and the swan valley fire. most of the fire front was inaccesible becasue A) the roads are to narrow for trucks to go down and safely do a u turn if they have to get out quick. and the other problem was it was mostly on rocky outcrops inaccesiable by trucks. and all the helicopter were focused on the kelmscott fire
NOT ENOUGH TIME TO REACT. Are they kidding were there any deaths. yes its sad that so many houses were lost but what do these people think fesa are miracle workers.

don't get me wrong, FESA guys
don't get me wrong, FESA guys on the ground and volenteer firies where abosulte fab and hero's
BUT they under resourced, don't have the big guns of the air that they need and not enough heavy duty 4x4 fire tenders. We got huge massive engines at the airports, cause international law requires us to have them, but our chances of an air crash and fire are 100,000 less than bush fires in our hills and suburbs. We can spend hundreds of millions on dedicated fire tenders for the airport, but bugger all on dedicated big air tankers. Go think

mate you can live in bush
mate you can live in bush land, but you need to build to the conditions. THATS the issue.
houses with roof top sprays and diesel fired pumps will survive, you can't bank on pumps powered off the electrical grid, it was switched off ASAP when poles went down.
You can't have leafy trees over hanging the house and expect it not to burn. You can't have fences painted with paints that flame up in an instant. Use colour bonded fence, face brick etc.
You can't build a house out of wood, planks and other combustible material and expect it to with stand fire. A proper fire retardant house should be able to be exposed to a passing flame front for 3 minutes and not go up in flames. I will find the youtube clip from the USA California housing codes for fire proof houses.
Big glass looks good, but it crack and imploded with the heat radiation and then the fire is in the house.
Paradise is a place where the wild things are calm for now! BUT it's not always calm in paradise, remember that folks

What are the areas like up
What are the areas like up their ?
I can remember last year hearing about a couple suburbs where the owners have not been clearing around the homes and trees virtually on top of houses,,can't recall the suburbs but they were high risk due to a lot of Apathic home owners/renters and it was making it worse for thwe neighbours.

why donm't we as fire prone
why don't we as fire prone country have any of these large scale water bombers??????
please some one tell me why???

yes we go the Swan river and sea, yet none of these WTF...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS77A3IPEv4&feature=related
we have old airframes nolonger in the hours limited for use as passenger planes just sitting and rotting at airports, when they can be retro fitted to do this kind of work. Still safe to fly, yet not used!!! WHY?????
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uDSLh53Ppw&playnext=1&list=PL994ECD4089DF841E
if you want to save houses and lives then you need this one!
Get a grade 5 kid to do them sums, they can do it!
one tanker = $25m
one fire like this one = 120 homes damaged at ~$1m per home = $120m
NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, JUST GOOD INVESTMENT. oh anf they have a range of over 2000km so can get anywhere fast.

got the bloody bug under my skin now to find out why we don't have any proper large scale water bomber shere in WA.
The Bombardier CL415 can carry close on 6,5 tons of water, that more than most smaller fire brigade vehicles!
And can turn around from drop to fill fsater than anything on wheels.
They still being made to order and even Malaysia has them now for fire and marine roles.
Why can't WA have four or five of these? They could have roles as marine and rescue aircraft, fire bombing roles and worth every penny spent.

this is the Evergreen tanker, 26,000 gallons of water!
Now one of these stationed at Bullsbrook airforce base and with a 4000km range and 600mph speed, it could service anywhere in hours.
Refills in 30 minutes, so it can land, fill, take off in 40minutes and be back in the hills or south perth etc dropping a major wet spot on any fire!
And here we are with our small crops sprayers and 3 heli tanks!

ive seen those big jumbo jets that they strip it and fill with bigass water containers. it think there in the US though, would be good seeing 2 or 3 of those running here.
