new towing size for boats
Submitted by doghouse on Tue, 2015-02-17 09:41
they just brought in new towing size length for boats from the front of car to the end of outboard motor can not be longer than 14m if it is longer than that you need oversize signs front and back
That makes my 5m boat behind a Nissan patrol only JUST legal

I would think it just means
I would think it just means no fwy towing. Same rules as under 2700.
But this sucks. I guess i may aswell make the next boat 2700 as i will be over 14m anyway haha
Send us a link or bulletin. I heard this before but was incorrect.

yes, who is "they"? Police,
yes, who is "they"? Police, Main Roads?
EDIT
Because i have just rung Main Roads who administer Oversize vehicles permits and there is nothing listed on their "updates" page nor do they know anything of it so I say BOLLOCKS without a link.
Maximum combination length is 19 meters
They did say there is some changes regarding rowing boats (as in skulls etc) which are extremely long (8-19 meters) on a trailer and probably have never been enforced before.

Yes a link would be good. If this is correct and not just a rumour then it will announced on a transport/MRD website.

VSB1
VSB1 - Vehicle Safety Bulletin 1 - is the relevant document. It says that the max length of a trailer is 12.5 metres, and the total overhang can't exceed 3.7 metres.
This is the new national code of practice that WA has adopted but not all other states yet.
Also beware that there are local interpretations, which kind of defeats the purpose of a national standard.

correct, but that doesnt deal
correct, but that doesnt deal with oversize load combinations which come under Main Roads.
From memory it is over 12.5 for a rigid or 19 meters for a combination with pig trailer, not 14m as stated above.

12.5m length of trailer plus
12.5m length of trailer plus ~5.5m car = 18m (plus outboard overhang?)
Not much change to get excited about

Who is AIS?Im still confused,
Who is AIS?
Im still confused, as DOT has nothing to do with oversize loads.
It is administered by Main Roads WA.
And if they dont know about then...???
EDIT-just googled the number and it is Main Roads-I have already spoken to them this morning and the lady "consulted with her boss" and said they knew nothing about it.
I rang the 138138 number which goes to head office, but will try your number in the morning.
there is no mention in either HVO updates or the WA Government Gazette that I can find.

Towing length
I have just rung Doghouses number which goes to Vehicle Standards, spoken to a bloke who handles among other things the certification of A frames for motor homes towing cars.
He knows of no changes (still 19 meters) but is checking up and going to get back to me shortly.

You would rightly expect that such a change would involve consultation with the BIAWA among others and an extensive awareness campaign

They won't campaign it
Typical Department of transport of WA they love changing rules without telling anyone I'm in automotive business have been doing upgrades with a engineer same thing for the last seven years decided in December they would can it without notifying any one caused lots of dramas.
went to a national meeting years ago regarding nationalizing the rules and regs for all department of transport Australia wide all the knobs came over from Canberra and yep it got the thumbs up never seen it enforced was a joke.

It's a trap!
Any bets it will end up as a revenue raising exercise? Yes,sir, you now need a permit to tow your (insert practically any f**in thing) , but we can give you a blanket permit for one year. That will be $150, please, cash or card?
Or am I just cynical?

Towing Limit important info
OK guys, I have done the following
1/ rung Main Roads WA and checked their HVO updates page
2/ Checked WA Government Gazette
3/ Rung Doghouses number (Vehicle Standards) above and spoke to a bloke named Denham who just rang back
Denham asked around his colleagues and none know of anything such as Doghouse raised above.
Main Roads HVO branch know nothing (they issue and police Oversize permits)
No mention on any of the above sites where new laws must be announced before implementation
So 19 meters is still the maximum combination length and 12.5M trailer length

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator
Was meant to bring all of the States under one set of rules, unfortunately when they put all of the different states rules together they came up with a set of rules that involved the lowest common denominator from each state. As far as I know WA and NT decided that these changes would be a step backwards and therefore will continue to operate under our current set of rules.

WA rules for oversize are mostly better and certainly more practical than the other States anyhow.

Here's one slighty off topic, do you now have to have rated shackles on you trailer chains? If so then you you would think the chains would have to be changed to rated chains also. Anyone clarify?

Any trailer inspected since ???? Must have chains that have the AS4177? Standard and rating on the links plus a rated shackle.
Its in the ADR's and my trailers over the last 5 years certainly required it when going over the pits

Interpretations?
Last year I had a trailer and boat brought over from Vic (brand new). Rated chains were required, but not rated shackles.

From the VSB i posted
From the VSB i posted above
"Rated chain shackles or other suitable fittings must have sufficient load capacity to match the rating of the required chain as specified in Table 2 below."
So it appears you got away with it.
Not the first time the inspectors were wrong though!

Yes. You need rated chains and have done for a while to pass inspection.
I did then the best that I knew how. When I knew better, I did better.

At the bottom of the document
At the bottom of the document that Rob posted is an exemption for older trailers:
Note: All previously licensed (registered) trailers are acceptable with chains that were originally supplied at the time of licensing providing they are in good condition, appropriately sized and are safely secured to the trailer.
That would let most people off the hook.

And if you go to the ACT, the rules are different again, I heard of several stories of grey nomads in their 5th wheelers being busted by the local coppers for not having an articulated vehicle license to drive their vehicles.
