parmelia bank squid.

Planning to take the kids to Parmelia bank to catch some squid over the coming days ...which will be my first serious crack at some squid in the sound.  Have just bought a few shimano jigs in a range of colours and sizes.  Any tips or reports from those in the know?  Cheers. Westy.

Gets those jigs near the bottom

 Hey westy,

shimanomo jigs have gone pretty good for me I personally think yo Zuri and yamashita are the best though. I find if the water is really clear brown jigs are really good and white seem to go good aswel. Keep swapping them over though because different jigs perform on different days until you find a successful one. I think 6-9 metres in metro waters is a good depth. Throw ur jigs in and make sure you are near the bottom and pull them up every 10 minutes or so to re cast. Often you will catch them on the drop! Anyway that's my two cents. Good luck mate

On the drift

Forgot to add incase you are unsure always be on a drift when squidding unless your using pencil jigs. Every day obviously the drift is different so just get a feel for how much line u will need out. If the drift is really fast sometimes it's hard work getting jigs to the bottom. If that's the case use a sea anchor or cast into the drift.

I like to hang a jig out back

Wed, 2016-12-28 17:56

I like to hang a jig out back with a small ball sinker to keep it down and then cast ahead of the drift with my egi combo.

There's been a few times more than I'd like to admit that I have been outfished by the rod holder.

for some reason brown jigs

for some reason brown jigs (natural) or pink are best for me.

I always use yamashita. but I'm sure your jigs will be fine.

I find just put the rod in rod holder let the boat do the work ......best to have a beer in your hand at this time.

drift over the contours and mark anything you get a hookup on. go back and drift it again. squid hang out in big schools so once you find one there will quite often be more in the same spot.

it's important to be close to the bottom so depending on your drift and jig weight let out enough line to be close to bottom. (just b4 you are snagging weed)
