Quobba Report

Got back Saturday from a fantastic week at Quobba

Weather was not perfect but we were able to fish every day and managed to get a few fish past the sharks. Fished mostly at Garths and finally found the caves. Also fished a secret spot that I am sworn to secrecy. Luckily one day we fished there no sharks and we managed to land 8 Sharkies and 2 spannish mackeral. kept 6 of the fish and happy to be putting some back.

Sharkies average 5-8kg and the mackies caught were around 7-8kg.

Managed to hook a few more mackies but found them unstopable. Some we estimated to be 15kg. They either reefed us or sharks got them.

I also managed to get a small GT and on the last day landed a shark of around 5ft. Took a jig meant for the sharkies. Think it is a Bronzie

Overall had a great week catch 16 Sharkies and 2 mackies.

My weapon of choices was Diawa Saltist 6500 loaded with 50lb braid and Shimano Starlo 1006 graphite rod. Lures were mostly Bucktail Jigs we purchase from cabelas in the US and also 85g Raiders.

Will with best Sharkie from the trip at Garths

Hooked up on good size mackie - lost to sharks

maybe a POTM contender there Iceman.  Sounds like the annual Sharkie run is well under way.  On the actual shark apparently Bronzies dont go north past the Abrohlis so it must be one of the other plentiful types of whalers that frequent that bit of coast

Bronzies

Have caught bronzies up as far north as Barrow island in reasonable numbers, backed up by having fisheries shark research blokes on board at the time.

Need to come up with you one year, for sure!
Guess I'll see you at the Chrissy do on Saturday? Or are busy saving peoples lives that day? If you are there, make sure you bring your phone with lots of pics for me to flip through.

Wont be there - not my thing and still need to do a bit of sorting from the trip. Have to work out what I need to replace. Lost about 30 jigs/lures over the week.

I reckon the rare catch of a bronzie that far north is possible like the big Dhuie someone posted on here a year or two back. Like Glen said so hard to tell them apart.
