So what would you do in this situation?

Hey all, just a question for you..

This happened a few weeks back when Leah and I came back from a fish on the 3 mile. Started off with a light sw wind around the 5 knots and as the sun came up it started to kick in. We fished and once we were done the wind was well and truely in at around the 20 knots. As i got to the ramp at Hillary's there was one boat there being the skipper's ticket fella teaching about 5 guys and one really nice Trophy 8m boat just about to launch.

As i got closer to have a quick perve on the boat while i was getting my car/trailer these 2 ladies popped out and said hey can you give us a hand reversing it as they are shocking and there hubbies are at work. I looked at them and said no worries and reversed it off the trailer into the water. One lady parked it while the other struggled to hang onto the boat in the wind. She even got into the boat without tying the ropes or starting the motor. I could actually hear the skipper dude shouting at her what to do while i was back up getting my trailer ready. Then i heard the motor start out of the water.

When i saw the lady that parked the car i asked again 'sure you guys are going to be alright getting it back on etc' she replied with oh wel be fine our hubbys are coming later.

Only once i got to Leah with my boat on the trailer it hit me thinking shit i didnt ask them if they actually knew what they were doing and had a skippers ticket etc. Even Leah looked at me and said ahhh they look like they know nothing, did they even check if the bung was in?? By then it was too late they had moved off.

I guess my question is what would you guys do? At the time i thought i was doing a favour but i think back and probably the favour was to say no.

p.s hope they made it back safely

Not easy

You reacted totally understandably in my view - help people out etc when you can and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Unfortunately everything only becomes crystal clear in hindsight and perhaps they should not have been on the water in the first place. Its not your job to check for skippers tickets, but based on your description it would appear neither of them had one and shouldn't have been on the water at all.

If that were the case then the hubbys have a lot to answer for in allowing them to launch the boat.

We will never know. Agree - hope they made it back safely and didn't spoil anyone elses day in the process.

No way known I would allow my Wife within 15 feet of my boat (if I owned one....). So where were the hubbies? Hanging out the washing or getting their hair done????

Thats a difficult situation

Thu, 2010-10-21 10:25

I would have done the same .

Hard to tell if they have the skill's to handle a boat until its in the water.

I guess if they can't reverse the trailer it is possibly an indicator ,although plenty of

people with skippers ticket's can't reverse a trailer.

At the end of the day ......its not our responsibility.

Sha, i think you did all

Sha, i think you did all that most would do. Neil is right, it's the boat owners responsibility... If they were just waiting inside Hillarys, i guess there's nothing really life threatening that could go wrong, and if they cook the engine by not having it in the water, than it's probably a good wake up call for the blokes.

their problem

Thu, 2010-10-21 10:53

i know where your coming from but, they are adults and should have known that they require a RST and have reasonable knowledge of how to handle a boat and its equipment.  how many people do see get into a high powered car and drive like an Learner driver,  Until the RST was introduced anyone could buy any size boat or jet ski then learn how to use it by getting it in the water.

if i saw them out on the water and acting dangerously / putting lives at risk i would ask them if they neede help or inform the water police, the same as you would on the road.  some of the idiots you see on the boat ramp just trying to launch their boat you would question how their going to be handling the boat if the conditions are bad let alone navigational skills

example of bringing in a law or licence with good intentions then never policing it. eg. driving while using a mobile.

We see that type thing regularly in Busso/ Duns over the holiday period, it really makes you wonder...

So what...

Thu, 2010-10-21 18:15

...if they had skippers tickets or not? Those things aren't worth the paper they're written on. It's entire reason for existance is so that you have something to show fisheries/cops/dept of safety if they pull you up.

You can have this rusted/corroded out hull in the backyard for five years and can be exempt from the practical assessment? WTF?

Why is it that people with 70 foot yachts can qualify for an RST by simply driving a 5m tinny around for less than half a day? What is THAT going to accomplish? Sweet FA if you ask me.

One of my mates did his RST in about 45 minutes...the bloke just sat in his car and watched them approach/tie up to the jetty. Since no one got whiplash, and the motor remained on the transom, and no jetty pylons fell over, they passed.

If it was me I would have stopped these wenches dead in their tracks because it's people like them that drive everybody's insurance through the roof. I know that's not politically correct (why do I even have to explain this) but sometimes you have to call a spade a spade.

Thu, 2010-10-21 23:08

imo. if you cant even reverse the trailor down the ramp you shouldnt be putting the boat in the water. let alone taking it out . but each to their own. they may have had their ticket but their hubbies wouldnt let them take control of the boat. Sandy's not the best at reversing the trailer but she can handle the boat with no probs at all, so you just cant tell. Back to the question and the answer would be .No , i wouldnt help them out. mainly because if something happened i would feel partly responsible

also don't forget who would have to help them if they got into trouble?, and if they got into trouble would they know what to do.

Sitting at ramps on weekends I have seen some blokes do worse.
