What do you do for a living - 2016

I'm sure there was another of these back in 14/15 but can't seem to find it.  Time for an update.  So what do you do for a living in 2016?  Me, I'm holding in there with Health and Safety at the moment and run the Site on the side, always busy and not enough time for fishing lately, but really need to start changing the work life balance again as the scales are getting tipped in the wrong direction lately.

Change of lifestyle 12 months ago

Tue, 2016-03-22 09:19

Was a FIFO electrical supervisor with australia's largest iron ore producer for a number of years until I was made redundant in March last year. Payout was nice, cleared all debt. Then got called back in by same company to help out. This led to a new career in training and compliance delivery with a large training organisation. I now work around a week a month, either in Perth at HQ or onsite in the Pilbara. Mostly revolving around High Voltage training.

HSE Manager

Tue, 2016-03-22 09:47

HSE manager for an American Oil and Gas Exploration company. Spent 12 years on rigs doing 28/28 rotation but have been office based in Perth for the last 4.5 years. Like other comments above, the market is shite at present with mates and peers being laid off left, right and centre. We finish offshore drilling in about a month and then I may get forced to go fishing more often..

For a large Offshore Drilling Company. Like Rigpig, spent my time doing rotational but was office based in Africa then in Aberdeen. Transfered to Perth but was made redundant so have been forced to do more fishing while doing the odd job as an advisor overseas. Mostly it is famine time.

Still offshore on rig tenders but it's dead just now.

Expecting the toecutters to come thru again soon

Parked our vessel on the slipway so Adam can pop out of his airconditioned office every couple of days and polish it and maybe hazard card something to keep the KPIs up

Layed off

Wed, 2016-03-23 04:34

Was made redundant last march after working on oilrigs for 20 odd years.

Was good getting some months off but that has lost it's shine now. No oilfield jobs going so with the loss of my house looming i started to work for my brother in his home maintenance business.

Sucks driving on the freeway for 40min in the morning and arvo, working like a slave for peanuts and only getting the weekends (when it is windy) off.

Oh and the missus is gone so i'm a single dad now also. Life can really pile it on.

Sorry to hear that, hard times for all of us. It's a ghost town down at Halliburton at the moment. I reckon at least 60-70% have been made redundant down there.

Auto spraypainter and boilermaker welder both trade certified. Spraying cars from age of 17 then started bmw at 29. Had a few local gigs but you are let go as soon as the jobs finished. Kwinana strip is a sad drive these days.

Fri, 2016-04-15 08:01

I been doing the Commissioning, startup / stayup campaign's and projects (mechanical technician) for BP in Angola for the last 3 years but the country almost went bust and we were waiting 4 months to get paid. Needless to say i left there and now im supervising for an industrial maintenance company in Rockingham. Intend to travel this year and get some real estate with the mrs while there's not much work in oil and gas then go back next year i think.
