When is a lure not a lure.

Recreational fishers around the world  all have their individual thoughts

as to what a lure is, but when is a lure not a lure.

We accept that Halco, TT's (Tackle Tactics) ZMan, Predatec, Gulp are lures in as much that they are artificial lures, be they

soft or hard.

So when someone uses a live tommy, a piece of squid or a chunk off  of a fish fillet, are they not lures?

Or is it that traditionally, we use these forms of baits as baits & that is what we stick too as a tradition?

Fishwrecked experts tell me what you think, as I would like to have a definitive view based on your comments so that

I can include them in my e-books on recreational fishing.

Cheers

Yeah, along the lines of what walfootrot said, but I would add a lure is usually fished actively (given action)

Whereas in the USA, lures are

Tue, 2014-09-23 16:44

In the USA, lures are frequently referred to as "bait", i.e Crankbait, Spinnerbait, Chatterbait, Buzzbait etc.  Go figure....

In my mind a lure is non-organic, or manufactured.

If it's harvested, cultured/grown (fish, squid, seaweed, maggots etc.), or consists of organic material (bread, dough, pollard etc.), it is bait.

The Berkley Gulp range is controversial to me:  Though it's a lure, I find that the sandworms and smaller crustacean imitations work very well as bait, i.e attached to a sinker and cast out, without any form of retrieve!

Simple...

...if it stinks and/or goes rock hard (and this includes Gulps) when you leave it on your hook when you chuck the rods in the shed, it's bait!

 Thanks fellas.

The question was not meant to be frivolous, but after hearing some recent comments

I thought I'd pose the question.

Thanks again, much appreciated

Rifle shot

Thu, 2014-09-25 18:42

A lure turns in to a rifle shot when you don't notice the line wrapped around the rod tip when you cast out and straight after that it becomes a huge 4 letter swear word.

Or maybe lures are "bait"

Fri, 2014-09-26 04:44

Or maybe lures are "bait" when they're on display at the local tackle shop?  As they say, a good lure only needs to catch fishermen!
