Big thank you to Rotto Rangers & staff

well no body ever says thanks for help and advice or great service anymore when dealing with people like the Rangers.

Over last week, we had a problem with our mooring and also an issue with a discrepancy on our Rottnest permit.

Senior Ranger Dave and his staff were very helpful, understanding and went 100% beyond their call of duty.

Same goes for Dalphene at the Rottnest Visitors center that moved us over to a pen on the refuelling jetty at no cost and great service.

So we're saying thanks and giving a  to the Rottnest Rangers and Visitors Center staff.

NT Goose Trip

Had my first crack at goose hunting early in December.

Took a few days LSL and headed up to Darwin where I met a few blokes off a hunting forum I frequent. Had a blast literally, got a few geese and a couple of ducks, missed plenty more and got well and truly hooked on it.

Season is unfortunately finished now but I'm already looking forward to Sept when it all kicks off again. Pretty easy to do with the shooting done on one of four hunting reserves set aside by the NT Govt, all within an hours drive of Darwin. Season permit costs about $20.

Geese were taken with bbb's and the ducks with no 2's (both in steel shot). The breasts of the goose taste great done as schnitzels.

any fellow bowhunters

hi guys,

hi guys been in perth for about a year now and have been out and about trying to get onto property owners for permission to hunt on their lands, to which has been alot of fuel and phone calls and letterf for very little replys and the answer of no, i understand thier concern and do not blame them no harm to ask, but im trying to just see if any one out there knows of any one that can help out or point me in the right direction of some one that would not mind in some one to come out and knock out a few ferals, not trying to get every thing that moves but some nice pelts would be nice or some nice trophy horns or take out some bunnies or a cpouple of foxes, any help appreciated. im even keen to help out and lend a hand if it gets me onto the property to hunt.

Spit Roast

Does any one want a spit roast? There is a huge one (8ft spit)down the road from me in Beckenham on verge collection.  It is belt driven so even if the motor doesnt work you could replace with another and use the reduction gear box.  It has the spit, meat clips, stand, motor and gear box.  You need fire and a cow.  If you got inventive it could be gas powered in an enclosed box.  But I like Fire.

PM me if interested.

Dry Ice Exmouth

Does anyone know if there is a place in Exmouth we can get dry ice to keep our fish frozen for the trip home?

Fish keeping

G'day

Pretty new here. Thought I would whack up some photos of some of the fish that I keep. I have been a serious aquarist for many years now, and while fishing is an expensive hobby... it has nothing on fishkeeping. Between fishing, fish keeping and a mrs i stay more or less broke most of the time. Not that I don't have some serious fun along the way though!

There has been a lot of discussion on stingrays lately. So I think these photos are probably the most appropriate. I have a group of 4 P. motoro stingrays, which are FW rays from the Amazon. They are currently juveniles ~25cm disk width. Large adult females can push 60cm+. They are in a 8x3x2.5 tank for now. Have a 8x6x3 acrylic tank in storage that will be set up when my new house is done (doesn't fit through the doors in my house now). The biology of FW rays is very similar to SW rays. Suprises me on these forums the old wives tails I hear about rays. Like they don't have teeth!? let me give you the hot tip they most certainly do, even worse they have a plate in their mouth for crushing, so all those people who suggest sticking their fingers into a stingrays mouth, do so at your own risk. Also heard flipping them on their backs isn't good for them, also not true. I know of many overseas ray keepers that ultrasound pregnant females to see the development of the young pups. This does them no harm, and being pregnant the ray is at its most sensitive.

My Mangrove Jack. These guys are said to be notoriously agro, I haven't found that to be the case so far. Although this may change as the fish matures. Pics are a little old, fish is currently about 25cm.

Have more or less kept anything imaginable over the years from pretty cichlids to Giant catfish. Any other fish keepers on here?

Cheers,

Alex

Something Different

Bagged out on some Baldies yesterday so we thought we would fire up the pizza oven. Baldie and garlic prawn pizzas went down a treat!

Fishing Under the Ice Vid

Mobile companies - which one?

Anyone here on Vodafone at the moment?

I am on 3 and since Voda took over they have been trying to convert me, but about a year ago I heard that their reception was not very good. I mentioned it to them and they said that it has since improved and they now have the 850mhz system in place making the signal as good as Telstra's 3.5G system. Is this true?

I use 3 mobile numbers and will be adding a 4th, so they have offered me a pretty decent deal.

585 fade out

Guys just wondering at what speed does the picture on your Furuno 585 fade out. I'm getting up to about 10-15 knts and then it's pretty much un-readable. Does this mean I need to adjust the tranny? Or something else I can adjust on the unit itself? Cheers Andy

Boat Ramp Behaviour

Hello all, Just wanted to bring this up again after a few interesting encounters at boat ramps in the river over the last few weeks.

1. If you are on a single Jet-Ski and have taken 48 of your friends out, please dont have them park in the retrieve/launch bays while they collect their mountain of equipment from your jetski.  There are usually rig up/down bays metres away where this is suitable behaviour.

2. If the above is you, and you notice boats queuing up waiting for the ramp.  Tell your mates to move in a smart fashion.  After being told, one bloke walked back and forth from the jetski to his car four times taking another 5 minutes to move while there were four boats waiting.

3.  One way means one way.  Dont drive your vehicle without a trailer the wrong way out of a one way boat ramp carpark holding up cars with boat trailers and receiving and ignoring comments from everyone just because and I quote 'I can make it'.

4. Queue proceedure.  If you have brought your boat in to shore and dropped someone off to get your trailer, the trailer enters the queue.  Just because your boat is on the beach next to the ramp does not mean it is your turn.  I had a dickhead in a ford territory park between me and another vehicle and trailer who had just arrived in the launch/retrieve lanes as I was about to reverse down to launch the boat.  All I could do is look at this dickhead in disbelief as the whole area is packed out with kids and families. There are three Launch/Retrieve lanes at this ramp, the two left hand occupied, right unoccupied and this dick literally parked between the two of us in the left hand lanes.  After launching I watched them back down the middle of a two lane ramp and hold the ramp up for the next 5 minutes unloading people and shit from the boat.

5. Rig up/Down areas are where you load/unload your boat, undo trailer straps, put in bungs etc.  Dont muck around on the ramp and hold everyone else up because you are disorganised.

6. If you are a car without trailer, and have no reason to enter the launch/retrieve lane JUST STAY OUT OF THE AREA.

I think that will do for now.

Appalled and need to vent

So i took the dinghy out today to have my first attempt at catching some bream on lures. I launched from the memorial park boat ramp, unfortunately i didnt catch anything but i really still dont know what im doing however thats not what im upset about. On return to the boat ramp at about 7:30 i see a couple of guys using a throw net, as i get closer and put the dinghy on the shore to get ready to bring it in i see they have a number of very small bream tangled in the net. They were taking their sweet ass time returning them and some were pretty lifeless by the time they got around to chucking them back in. I was under the impression that nets in the river are illegal? Regardless i couldnt call fishwatch quick enough but had to watch as they threw it out again and repeated.

Now i was more than happy to confront them, but there was an entire family of them there with about 5 guys, so my old man was very much against the idea so i settled with the call to fishwatch. As i write this now im still fuming, whilst fisheries try as best as they can i seriously dont think theres enough presence out there. I've been out a few times this festive season through the river and in mandurah and not seen them once.

Sorry that this is a whinge but when it seems as though your the only one doing the right thing it gets very frustrating!!

Oh and from what one of them was saying to the other i dont think this was a one off so if anyone sees this sort of crap plz call fishwatch. Hopefully they get what they deserve!!

Off topic- Horse Ajisment.

Hey All.

My girlfriend has 3 horses that she is looking to relocate. She is happy to pay ajisment so if any one has or knows of any one with property, looking for some extra cash it would be greatly appreciated. Horses are currently in the swan valley area in Perth. Alternatively  can any one recommend stables?  When It comes to horses I have no idea  So any advice on what to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Surf gear and Alvey

Fellas.... I have been looking at buying a 14ft, 5 piece, Poseidon 5 Gold class surf rod with the 3 tip sections, does anyone have any feedback on em? also as they are a low mount rod I will neeed to get an Alvey and was looking at the C51C5. I wind with my left hand so was wondering if it is possible to swap them over or do you have to buy a LHW model? I have a nice graphite surf rod with a Spheros reel which does me fine but last week I hooked up to a big (big to me anyway) shark and it made piss out of me so I want to get a more heavy duty setup.

Cheers - Winta.

Lowrance elite DSI help wanted

Hi all,

I am getting a chartplotter and was considering - do I get a Elite DSI/chartplotter combo so I can have the DSI as well as the HDS sounder or do I just get the HDS 5 in both stand alone chartplotter and sounder and link them and not worry about DSI (particularly given the HDS's seem to have better menu's and easier to use).

Basically if anyone who has the DSI (particularly the elite) can comment on thier worth in salt water.  I understand there depth limitations and thats not a problem as I will have the normal sounder.

1. Is the DSI beneficial in weed/reef areas rather than the tall tree lake senarios you see in the demo's??

Any pics of DSI in salt water would be of help as well if anyone has some

Cheers Paul
