Solar set up - Camping
Submitted by kirky79 on Mon, 2018-01-29 09:48Just chasing a bit of info on what solar set ups people use for camping. We recently got back from 2 weeks on Ningaloo station. We run 2, 80 litre Engels, one as a fridge and the other as a freezer. I have always run a 1 kva Honda genny and never had a problem, but have been thinking if I run solar during the day and the Genny at night I won't need to cart as much fuel in as I do.
So my questions are. What size panels to run my Engels for the days, and what size battery? Or just stick with what I'm doing.
TIA. Chris

Got out finally
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2018-01-28 22:17 With the winds suposedly dropping off we decided a 6 we were putting the tub in the briney this time we took our deck boss out with us .
We hit the water at about 7 and on our spot by 7:10 burley bomb set and the baits going out in anticipation . After about an hour with choppers hitting the baits like piranas i was constantly rebaiting. One of the lines took off but i knew straight away it wasnt a snapper but a small shark . With the winds picking up instead of dropping as forecast we called 10 minuits. Moments later another line went off taking me around the anchor rope . With a bit of manouvering i managed to see the culprit damn eagle ray . Oh well . Called a night and back in by 9:15 with a nice feed of shark.

Best/Biggest Roof toppable tinny???
Submitted by timboon on Sun, 2018-01-28 12:48Crew....
In the market for a new Tinny ( good second hand would do )
Needs to be roof toppable as we are buying a van to tow for trips away.......
Ideas?
Do you crew know anyone that RT's a 4.0mtr hornet?
They'd be ideal i would have thought but not sure how doable they are to roof top??
It will be going on a sturdy aluminum canopy that will handle a couple of hundred kgs if needed....
Boon...

Strikeright Ultraflo Fly Reel
Submitted by Iceman on Thu, 2018-01-25 08:40Trying to find some info on a Strikeright Ultraflo Fly reel I have. It was my dads and have had it sitting in the garage for a few years. I think it is at least 30 years old but no date on it.
Still have orginal box and instructions. Also the rod he used it with but no markings on the rod to indicate make etc.
Any info and idea of value would be appreciated.
thanks
Swan River - Australia Day advice.
Submitted by CameronB73 on Thu, 2018-01-25 07:33Just chasing some tips our first venture out onto the river for Aus day. I’ve read the DOT boating guide so know all that. I was thinking of putting in at Crawley / Matilda Bat ramp and anchoring west side of the Narrows so I’m not stuck in there till DOT allow us to move
What time does the car park at Crawley fill up?
whats the usual wait time to get out afterwards?
Any advice appreciated.

Should i go crabbing at dawesville or in the swan?
Submitted by DhuDan on Wed, 2018-01-24 13:36Hi
I'm planning to take my nephew crabbing for his first time tomorrow.
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction (nephew bores quickly).
Feels like the swan might be a lot of work for little reward with the rain that fell last week.
Any pointers greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Options to get a boat from Perth to Shark Bay
Submitted by Swompa on Wed, 2018-01-24 09:15Howdy Folks,
Heading up to Tamala in May and looking into options to get a boat up there? Typical first world problem where we have all blown cash on Caravans and can no longer tow a boat....
I have emailed a couple of freight companies but curious to see if anyone else has freighted a boat up north in similar circumstances?
Cheers

plague of choppers
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2018-01-21 14:14Went out last night with Sandy and bro in law hoping to get him onto a good snapper. But every time the bait hit the water there were plagues of choppers hitting the bait and stripping the hooks in a very short time.
with the sounder showing masses of color we figured there was heaps of whitebait under us as every time a chopper came up on the hook it was spewing whitebait everywhere. all choppers caught were between 20 and 25 cm. plenty of whitebait and plenty of choppers means plenty of food for snapper and not even getting a single hookup but hey , thats fishing for you.
looks like it might be a good year for the taylor fishos down here in mandurah.

Crocs footwear.........beware
Submitted by sunshine on Sat, 2018-01-20 14:33Sure I know they are ugly but they used to be very practical for boating and canoeing........NOT ANY MORE......recently purchased.....October..... my new crocs have shrunk two sizes. Yes shrunk! The company blames the problem on hot weather! What.... don't they expect hot weather in Oz? Then, after first stating that their warranty is for 180 days in an email to me have taken a massive backward step and now maintain the warranty is only 90 days putting my purchase just a couple of days outside the warranty period. Do they seriously suggest they are "fit for purpose" for use in this country. Me thinks the Trade Practices Act would deem otherwise so if they think I am going to accept their dodging and weaving they had better think again.
Think twice before buying Crocs, the cheap imitations don't shrink and are at least half the cost.

Pinkie drought hammered
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Wed, 2018-01-17 17:32With tuesday night being so calm Sandy and i decided its too nice to sit in front of the tv.
We headed out to our pubkie spot around 6:30 and got lines in the water waiting for sunset. Hardly a breath of wind at all. It was all quiet until about 8:30 when a line started screaming big time. I grabed the rod and the fight was on with a number of screaming runs peeling the line off like it was in freespool and about 1/2 an hour a nice size hammer came boatside and gaffed later weighing in (gutted) 20kg. Not too long after another line took off. The old sigma shakespear real was getting an almighty workout not ro mention me. This time there was no slowing it down and afteer about 150 mtrs of line was peeled off the knot at the swivel had busted .
At about 9 the sounder started showing fish underneath and with a jiggle of the burley bag and a few minuits Sandy was on with a punkie that came in at 6 1/2 kg . It went quiet for a while and then the tip of another rod started to bounce . I grabbed the rod and it loaded up with some massivevheadshakes. In about 5 minuits i had my first shallow water pinkie in the net . Ended up at 870 long and 71/4kg. To say i was happy was an understatement. At that stage all went quiet with only a fiddler comming up. Another successful night out.

Feeling Crabby
Submitted by Helen on Tue, 2018-01-16 22:21Hey peeps. I’m back after quite a few years... Woops time just slipped me by. I haven’t done much fishing over the last few years but need to get back into it ASAP. Just seeking a bit of advice. Does anyone know any good spots to take the nieces and nephews crabbing? We have always gone to the jetty a bit of a drive around the river close to the raffles but lately we haven’t caught anything. There are less people this year as well. Does anyone know anything that I don’t? Thanks :)

Tuna Tataki
Submitted by beau on Tue, 2018-01-16 09:57I thought with all the tuna getting around at the moment I would share a quick and easy Tuna Tataki a mate knocked up a few years back when I gave him a slab of yellowfin caught from Tim-o's boat.
"From catch to plate.. Tuna caught by my mate Beau then I marinated in ginger, soy & rice vinegar, rolled in sesame then seared to create Tataki."

Todays effort
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2018-01-14 18:34 Glorious weather but hard fishing. Hit the water about 8:30 yeah i know gentlemans hour. On the way out there were tuna busting up all over but only got 3 to satisfy the taste. With little wind and little drift it was hard to find fish. A few rubbish fish is all we could manage and 1 small pink until the final minuit i got a shark which was kept. All up enjoyable day even without the fish .

Free boat for two weeks- one condition- must skipper for rotto swim!
Submitted by oz74 on Fri, 2018-01-12 21:08looking for someone that might be in between boats or something and can help out with skippering for the Rotto swim on Feb 24th.
benefit to you is access to a boat to fish/ dive etc for a few weeks?
ive committed to skippering for brother-in-law who is coming over from nsw to do a duo (they've done it before), but I'll now be overseas.
happy for someone responsible/ genuine to have the boat for the couple of weeks beforehand and use as you please- but must be reliable for the 24th and must have somewhere secure to store the boat on its trailer.
its an ally about 26ft. Great dive/ fish boat. Will be full of fuel when you get it.
drop me a note if interested.
cheers

Best older school caravans?
Submitted by timboon on Wed, 2018-01-10 20:28Crew....
As the winter is not far around the corner i want to get organised and buy a van or the annual camping trip might not go ahead....
I'm not into bells and whistles nor am i into plastic fantastic i just want practical so i'm looking at grabbing an old van and if needed bring her back to life and use it hopefully for many years to come....
Like most things i figure the running gear on the older vans will be made from real steel so provided that is in reasonable order then the rest can be touched up/water proofed etc etc....
I'm just not real sure where to start is the problem here.....
Dont get me wrong if i had a spare 140K i'd get the Bushtracker but for now something sub 10k is what i'm looking for.....
So if anyone knows the better brands from yesteryear you're opinions will be appreciated.....

Successful mission
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Tue, 2018-01-09 07:49Hit the water again last night chasing the snapper. This time we were a bit more prepared to be smoked . As it started to get dark the fun .
We had a couple of good runs early but resulted in spat hooks . Then a couple of absolute smoking runs we got snapped of . Managed to get a shark of about 4 foot to the side of the boat after a 10 minuit fight only to have the hook bitten off. After that we had a score of fish 7 us 0.
All went quiet for a while then 2 of the 3 lines in the water went nuts. After about a 10 minuit fight both Sandy and i had monster pinks boatside. I decided to try and deadlift my pink over to get over to halp Sandy land hers . Big mistake. Hook pulled. Spewing. Altho we did manage to get Sandys into the net and on the deck with high 5s we were stoked. Within a few more minuits before we could get all sorted again the 3rd line went nuts. With a bit of teamwork and about 15 minuits we had a nice hammer to the side of the boat and with a perfect gaffe shot from Sandy the shark was flapping around on deck. In the end the score was fish 8 us 2 . Happy with the results altho could have been bettet but still got a good feed and had a great but frustrating night.the pinkie went 850ish and just on the 7 kg mark. The hammer went 15 kg. Going to be some nice meals on the way.
