Gnaraloo 2019 report

So many times heading up that way we all pray to the weather gods for at least 3 days of good fishing weather. Well the prayers were answered this trip and we walked into 6 days straight of awesome weather, and fished them all.

Day one:

Out to the 65m mark and it was a very slow morning with only the two Rankins on baord till around 2pm then the Reds came on the bite and nailed 4 good fish around 5kg each.

And wings for the BBQ washed down with a Chardy = livin.

Heads were kept for a Vietnamese friend of mine.

Day two:

Sunday probably the worst for the trip, 8 hours on the water for one Spanglie had a us scratching our heads wondering what we were doing wrong, but was heartening talking to ther blokes up there that they weren't faring much better.

Day Three:

Monday, slow again with a few bits and Pieces until I decided to mix things up a bit and start floating some mulies, within 5 minutes it was action stations as we nailed two 15kg Spaniards and a smaller model.

Day 4:

Tuesday:

Beautiful weather again saw us going wide and trying lots of spots for not much, once again a few bits a pieces until this beast hit my bait in 70m which I took for another gear destroying shark, when I saw him 20m down my hear lifted and I prayed he was under the magical metre. He came in at 997mm and just over 16kg. So happy not have to put him back over the side and try to release.

Day 5:

Wednesday, so it was forecast a glass off and it truly did. We had been talking to the lads next door who had been fishing out in the 100m mark so though I'd give it a crack. It's nigh on 37km so thought we'd stop in 65m first for a drop. First drop good fish dropped second drop shark so the mind was made up head for the 100's. Literally threw a dart at it with no marks and telling the boys to prey for any sort of flare up. So first drop within a minute I was on and my first ever GoldBand, it was then on for young and old with fish after fish. Double header's and just a good all round assortment, we'd finally found the honey hole. That bit of ground is now well marked each end, funny thing was nothing showed on the sounder but it was loaded. Left em on the chew so to speak after bagging out.

Day 6:

Weather not so kind but still a couple of finishing fish for the bag and time to rest up a couple of days and drink the beer stocks ;)

As mentioned on antother thread the track snapped the rear cross members of my trailer so had the ratchet strap it all together and get home on a wing and a prayer.

Onwards to 2020!

Refueling

I was wondering how everyone else goes refueling their boat. My boat is 6m and seems to struggle negotiating  it through the servo on the cheap fuel days. I usually get the odd glance and sometimes receive a polite word regarding being in the way.

How do the guys who have a big 7m plus platey go refueling? Is it just me?

I hardly ever see any other boats at servos am I missing something? Jerry cans?

Deck Cleaner Recommendations

Hey Guys

The deck of my boat is disgustingly dirty. It's stained with squid ink, grime and heaven knows what else.

I used to use Peter G's Kleen a Hull but wondering if there's anything else I should consider. I noticed Whitworths sells 3M Perfect-It boat wash has anyone used this before and would you recommend it.

Many thanks folks.

Reccomended boat trailer builder

Looking too purchase a trailer in the coming months for me Leeder 710, the trailers I have enquired about are not cheap, because me boat is 7 meters long and comesin around the 2 tonne mark i need a decent trailer with electric brakes also,

So how do other people deal with Octopus?

Harsh language didnt see to do anything. Bit of a short video of an Oci breaking some camera gear of Cottesloe this week.

Question

Hi everyone, I had a 21ft Northshore in the late 1990's I used to go out sea from Freo and Hillarys no problem, I sold it when I had a back injury in 1999, 3 years ago I got the bug again, and on an impulse I bought a 4.88 Quintrex sea breeze, I have mostly fished in the river, Walpole, and Mandurah, I am getting the urge to go out from Hillarys again, do any of you here go out from Hillarys in my size boat?

Regards Mal.

Cervantes / Hill River - Weeded out?

Anyone live up near Cervantes or has been recently? going to camp overnight Sunday and wondering what the beach is looking like.

cheers!

C-tek charge

Derwnt wreck

Has anyone fished the wreck of the Derwent in recent times, if so can you tell me how you went.

Lewmar winch not dropping anchor

Have a lewmar 700 series and today it would retrieve the anchor no dramas but wouldn’t let me drop the anchor down. Was occasionally tripping the fuse on the way down

would let out about 300mm of chain then not go any further

just wondering if anyone had the same problem

seems to be an issue with the clutch maybe

found it weird that it would drag the anchor in no drama but couldn’t drop it down at all had to do it manually

any pointers be much appreciated

How to purchase a child RFBL through DOT?

My daughters RFBL has expired and need to purchase a new one through DOT. Have now registered for a DOT account, however when trying to buy a license for her I do not get the option for a child concession, nor be able to put it in her name. My license expires on the 12th Jan just 1 day before the DOT cut over date, so I can't add mine first to see if it would allow a child license to be added afterwards.

Has anyone successfully purchased or renewed a child RFBL through DOT?

Coral Bay

And yes I love the drive up and back....

Exmouth fish filleting

G’day, I’m off to Exmouth in a few weeks time for a fishing trip, just wondering if anyone knows anyone up there who fillets peoples fish for cash?

I’m ok at filleting although it takes me a long time, but my mates coming with me have never filleted a fish before, so hoping we can pay someone to do it for us if we have more then a couple of table fish.

PM me if you prefer

cheers Paul

Marlin injures 2 brothers!

Just saw this headline this morning.

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/brothers-badly-injured-after-marlin-jumps-into-their-boat/ar-AABN0zi?ocid=spartandhp

Boat hit marlin.

Marlin jumps into boat.

Thrashes around, slicing and stabbing with bill.

Marlin jumps back out of boat.

Brothers left injured and airlifted to hospital.

1 statement was that hitting the marlin ..."was like hitting a cow!".

Have a great day everyone - off to work I go.

Cheers.

Browny.

Cape Range Tinny Fishing

Hi Guys,

I am heading up to Exxy next week and will have the tinny in tow. I have fished out of Tantabiddi a few times in the bigger boat but was looking to do a bit more fishing inside the reef within the national park this time around.

Does anybody have preference on best places within the park to launch? I've been in there a few times for some landbased fun but haven't really taken any notice of beach launch sites.

Cheers!

Plastic Ocean

Doesn't matter where you go, everywhere is covered in plastic. We need to pull our fingers out and try to stop the plastic tide from destroying us. I've been gathering/cleaning up quite a bit lately and trying to identify where it is coming from. Roughly 50% is coming from fishing activitiess in my area, both rec and commercial, c'mon guys pull yo finger out and stop it from entering our waterways.

Walpole in winter

Hey we are thinking of heading to Walpole end June and tacking a tinne with us is it worth it

Underwater cameras

In the market for a camera to film on land and underwater and I've no idea about cameras or what's new and how much I will need to fork out.

I have seen GoPros and similar models and I'm after some feedback or positive reviews from any who are happy with their cameras. Basically want to film fish and snorkelling.

Cheers in advance.

Solo bash yesterday 21/05/19

Low wind conditions was the forecast, so decided to skip work and head out for a fish.

Glassy in the cut, but was a washing machine heading out offshore!

Slow trip out, but gradually over the day the chop settled down for a 24 knott run back home in the arvo.

Fishing was quite good, but struggled to get away from baby pinkies. They are everywhere at the moment.

(Good sign for the future tho!)

In the end had a nice fat blackarse, and a respectable 800mm dhuie to fillet when back home.

Question about Cray Pots

Hi Peeps,
I have a simple question around cray pots, haven’t done cray fishing as such but keen to get a few pots and learn what I need to do, (I have my brother onboard and 2 licences so we are looking at buying 4 pots soon, already acquired an aluminium pot tipper). I have a question (ignoring the price in this example), I am seeking people’s experiences and advise. I noticed a few different types, fully wood including the base and then the wood ones with a metal grate base. Which is the better one to get?
Also, why is there such a big different with one having the wood slat across the opening and the other one not?
Thanks in advance to the guidance.
Johno

Fremantle fishing charters

Weekend Fishing in Exy

Managed to get into some fish on the weekend. Scored the Marlin while trolling a turbo head skirt at 14knots, was an epic hookup. Also on same day got a double header of Rankin, was reeling my line in flat out and got slammed 10m off bottom, called it for a shark at first.

Last pic was what I got in 4 drops out from Tantas.
